  1. ... She's deferring to Steve Phillips' knowledge. And that says just about all you need to know about Carrie Muskat. Besides the fact that she has completely contradicted herself within just a few short hours. She, pretty matter of factly, declared DeRosa wasn't going anywhere.
  2. I know I am doing the exact same thing :banghead: , it's only around 4 in Vegas so it's possible some new stuff starts rolling in soon as GM's start gong to dinner/out and I would think we have an idea where we stand on Peavy sometime tonight/late tomorrow morning IMO. 4pm is usually when people start thinking about getting out of bed and going down for some breakfast.
  3. Ron Artest you mean. Axelrod was the one who threw the cup at him I believe. No, a year later there was an incident where a fan was bothering Davis' wife and he went into the crowd at the UC to confront him. Hmmm...actually it turns out that this Axelrod is actually Obama's campaign manager's son: Who cares about the NBA and some dude named Axelrod. What we need right now is an update on the lowdown on Philly Billy Werndl.
  4. I'd be happy to go pick him up so that I can spend 4 1/2 hours debating the strengths of Jason Marquis.
  5. I heard on sports radio the other day with a guy who knows Rickey personally that the Jon Olerud story is just a myth. Two players made it up.
  6. http://blogs.dailyherald.com/node/1086#new LOL, we sit here refreshing this thread every 30 seconds for 5 hours this morning, get all these minor updates that suggest that a deal is getting closer, and then Bruce chimes in and sets us straight that almost nothing has gone on. I'm now picturing this group of guys no one knows with this fancy booth somewhere in the heart of the GM meetings where they just make up crazy stuff and feed it to the baseball writers who pass by from one meeting room to another to listen through the walls of the war room through a glass.
  7. Build a park so big that it can hold the result of a Bob Howry fastball. Yellowstone? Hahaha! Is Yellowstone big enough?
  8. Well, Gammons seems to be wrong about 100% of the time too. Yeah, but Gammons is basically just a roving reporter. He hears stuff like we hear stuff, then he reports on it. He's not "in the know" with any team, excluding maybe Boston.
  9. Goodbye Mark. Ummm ... reading skills? See the bolded. I'm thoroughly convinced that Carrie Muskat's source is the Cubs clubhouse janitor.
  10. Young sucks. 2008 Home ERA: 2.35 2008 Road ERA: 5.27 2007 Home ERA: 1.69 2007 Road ERA: 4.52 Get him out of Petco, and he's nothing more than back of the rotation roster filler.
  11. Who do you think the Brewers traded to get Sabathia in the first place?
  12. Peavy, Hermida and Furcal seems too good to be true. So it probably is. However, with Hendry seeming to be a frontrunner for Bradley, and possibly even Abreu, you would have to imagine that whoever they trade for would have to have the potential to be as good as one of the guys they could just sign as a free agent. Luke Scott doesn't do that. Hermida potentially does. I'm not all that thrilled with Hendry talking to MacPhail about anybody at this point since the Cubs always seem to get royally screwed by the Orioles.
  13. Agreed. However, why would Hendry trade a cheaper Pie for a more expensive Taveras? It would make zero sense, especially considering they aren't shopping for a CF.
  14. Where did Hermida come from? And who is better ... Hermida or Bradley? Hermida can actually play for us and not just sit on the DL . . . so Hermida. Teach me about Hermida, I feel like I'm missing something. He had a great year in 07, his first full year, but was pretty awful last year. His slugging and OBP took a big hit. Was there a reason for that, or are we just hoping to buy low and hope he returns to form? he's only 25 he's had major league success he's getting out of dolphins stadium he has awesome minor league numbers i think he's a great buy-low option Ok, I wasn't sure if he had gotten hurt or something. I wouldn't mind him over the likes of Teahen and DeJesus, but I still think I'd rather have Bradley. Of course if Hendry's plan is to get Peavy, get Hermida, and then go hard after Furcal, I'd be all over that. I'm the one who suggested Furcal, not any of the sources. It was just a suggestion. With the money for losing Marquis and DeRosa basically making Peavy's contract a wash, and getting a cheap RF like Hermida (Cedeno's money would make that a wash), maybe there is room to add Furcal. Oh I know it wasn't an official rumor, I was just thinking along a similar mindset to that. I don't know how much we'd have exactly, but I'm sure after unloading Marquis and DeRosa would more or less wash out Peavy for this year, and Hermida would wash out Cedeno, we'd still have some extra money floating around to make another move or two. There was also a rumor floating that whoever Hendry got for RF (Bradley, Abreu, Ibanez) would have the contract backloaded to make it work for 2009. Harden is probably off the books after '09 and Lee and Lilly? comes off after '10.

I don't think Hermida is a buy low candidate. I bet you the asking price is very high for him especially now that they moved some other pieces. The White Sox got Carlos Quentin from the DBacks for a minor league first baseman. Teams lose faith in young players quite often. The Marlins have said (since before we traded for Gregg) that Hermida is available, but he wouldn't come cheap. Pie and someone else wouldn't be a cheap package, IMO. The Marlins could put Pie in CF, Maybin in one of the corners and Cedeno can play SS if Ramirez gets moved to 3b.

Think along the lines of Carlos Quentin. Put a young guy coming into his prime into a line up full of bats and watch him go.
  18. Marshall? Or is that too much? Maybe Pie and Atkins? I want Hermida badly if our best options are Bradley and Ibanez. Maybe Cedeno. The Marlins are trying to move Uggla. Does Maybin project as a CF or a corner?
  19. Where did Hermida come from? And who is better ... Hermida or Bradley? Bradley. But, for the price, I'd take Hermida. Especially if it meant having the necessary money to get Furcal. Theriot then platoons with Fontenot.
  20. Hmm. Freeing up DeRo and Marquis money and getting Hermida could mean that Hendry will make a run at Furcal?
  21. I've never seen anyone make the argument that Petco is a hitter's park. But, Peavy is a better pitcher than Sabathia. And cheaper. And younger. And much less abused over the last two seasons.
  22. Veal doesn't own a roster spot on the Cubs, hence the availability through Rule 5. I also don't see a scenario where Hart, Guzman AND Wuertz are part of this trade, unless the Cubs feel like Cedeno and Andres Blanco can pitch in relief.
  23. I find it rather stupid that a top 10 3b of all time can't find his way into the HOF. Especially if there are lesser talented players in there, which there are. There have been a lot of 3b's to play the game over the last 130 some odd years. Santo's numbers are extremely impressive during the dead ball era. I have very little appreciation for the Veteran's Committee.
