  1. It's my understanding that Peavy doesn't wish/need to be traded. It's the Padres who have to get rid of him. He's going to get traded, it just matters to whom and for what. Both the Braves and the Cubs know this and so does every other team too. For the life of me I cannot understand why Towers didn't pull the trigger with the Braves unless Peavy really did tell them he wouldn't go (DonnieD's info). Anyway, The Cubs offer is pretty bad for a pitcher of his calibre, but if they're patient they just might get him, at least I'm hoping so. Not necessarily. If speculation that he really values a contender (i.e. Cubs over the Braves) is true, than he most certainly does want to get away from SD.
  2. These are definitely my concerns as well. I really only feel the Dodgers and the Angels are our competition here. Even though some blurbs lately say that the Cubs offer is lacking, the fact that early on we were considered front-runners with a decent offer, I believe Towers' latest talk of looking elsewhere and needing a third team in order to deal with is, really is just posturing -- both to encourage us to add more, but mostly to make other teams to feel they have chance. Of course the early talk of the Cubs having been front-runners was probably just posturing as well, to take advantage of the Braves :) So who knows... Not if Peavy never intended on approving a trade to the Braves. Which would seem strange... since Atlanta was on Peavy's original list. With only 5/30ths of the league mentioned, it would seem he'd be serious about those five. I find it hard to believe that the players included in a potential Peavy deal swing his preference so far away from them, considering how not-guarenteed-to-be-competitive Atlanta was when he probably made the list...

  4. That's a good point. Donnie: I don't suppose you got any sense of where his NL preference stood in comparison to other factors, did you?
  5. Thanks alot for the post, Donnie. I'm crossing my fingers that your source () knows what he's talking about.
  6. Don't get your hopes up too much. There was information he shared with mods that gave me the impression he may want to hold off on sharing that info beyond Friday. But, that's just my take. He may spill the beans tonight. Understandable. I'm not so much giddy about hearing something convincing as I am a bit fearful that I will lose in faith in the guy. As far as insider sources on message boards go, though, I'm really not worried about this one.
  7. As far as Donnie giving up some more info -- which some of us were remembering -- I did find this quote from very late monday night . . . My source will still be a potential source for the next 3 days so I can't go and ruin it now. If nothing has happened by Friday morning I will give up more information. So there you go. It'll be interesting to wait for him tonight :) edited to add: dextermorgan did remember right, I just was able to confirm it. my own memory . . . not so good.
  8. Maybe he will...remember, he posts late at night. I think I asked this awhile ago, but I don't remember getting an answer: what could he possibly be able to divulge on this certain day that he couldn't before. Obviously you can't say exactly, but can anyone give an example of how that even makes sense? From what I read, I'm guessing he won't divulge his information until after a deal is made. see, that makes a bit more sense. . . but it seems some people were expecting something Friday (I think I recall Donnie saying something about Friday, too.)

  10. They were so young back then. Kerry with his youthful boyishness, Mark with his long, girly hair. :(
  11. I would be shocked into a coma if Hendry did that -- it would also be the first rumored deal that I didn't think we were getting a steal from. That said, my money's on No Way Hendry lets Marmol and Wood both go within weeks of eachother. Even for Peavy.
  12. I like how it's pretty consistently "Kevin Freaking Gregg" already :) How soon before he becomes a Howry-esque bad word replacement? Before he pitches for us? lol
  13. It won't be too hard to see the Cubs without Wood. 1999, 2006, and 2007 weren't that long ago . . . I remember what's it like to not have Kerry Wood pitching for us. The difference now will be we won't be paying him. (okay, that was a little more cynical than I actually feel -- just trying to rationalize this already)
  14. Hasn't Dempster been an All-Star twice? Not that it matters, but yeah, he was the obligatory Marlin selection in 2000.
  15. Yes...if true, this source would know what he was talking about. HE? You just cut the number of potential sources in half you fool. Or its an inherant sexual bias... Raisin's sexist? I'm telling his girlfriend on him! Raisin has a girlfriend??!?! I'm telling his boyfriend on him! edited to make myself appear to be a middle schooler.
  16. I didn't expect anything else. I'm glad his secret story doesn't sound absolutely bogus, but really, there was no proof he could have given. I don't think I said I was going to prove anything, I just responded to someone's request that I share my information with a mod and let them judge. Really I did it for the sanity of the board, I don't really care if anyone believes me or not. Like I said I completely lucked into this information, it isn't like I'm going to become an insider or anything and have scoops for every rumor. This is most likely a one-time thing. I do get that, in fact, and actually appreciate you even taking that step. I just felt -- maybe wrongly -- that some people thought anything definitive would come from it. I for one have very little doubt that you're telling the truth. My doubts come from your source's source, and then the difficulties of a deal actually going down the way it is rumored to. More power to you, though, man. Stick around with us :)
  17. Let's talk about this line, it has me wanting a bit more... Is this a fact that should be encouraging cubs fans or discouraging. On the one hand, having the better offer equals good; but, the way it's stated here, almost like a throwaway line, seems to say "Cubs' offer is better, not that it matters anymore." Anyone elses thoughts? (I know it's fighting a losing battle to analyze the writing of a sports writer, but I can't help it here)
  18. I didn't expect anything else. I'm glad his secret story doesn't sound absolutely bogus, but really, there was no proof he could have given.
  19. yeah, but as a couple others said previously, what do we expect Donnie to do to "prove" his legitimacy? What photo or explanation is clear, legitimizing, and not fakeable. This is not an actual attack on Donnie -- he seems more well-spoken and intelligent than most people I suspect are trolling with rumors -- I just don't see how he's planning to prove anything
  20. really? where is that coming from? At least the second part of that goes against what pretty much every source has agreed on so far...
  21. Yep. Assuming the latest report is true, that is... Just earlier today, a report was saying "A Padres exec says the team has options, but nothing is close." Also, this quote (CBS Sportsline) at least has a glimmer of hope in its phrasing.
  22. oh shoot, I hope this falls through, but it probably won't
  23. that was my thought, too, especially since the wrigley renovations would seem to be far more expensive and time-consuming. Really? More expensive than dealing with permanent left field and right field bleachers, and not just one level, mind you. I doubt they'd have to do much of anything to the structure itself. right, it's not like they'd be moving fences back, needing to do something about seats. If they move fences in , say, 10-15 feet (I have no real idea), what really needs to be done other than moving the walls.
