  1. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20081126&content_id=3694386&vkey=hotstove2008&fext=.jsp For those of us who hope Hendry offers arbitration to Wood, I wouldn't take too much comfort in this article by the truly awful Carrie Muskat. In it, she provides this wonderful bit of misinformation: Wrong, Carrie. That deadline is December 12th.
  2. If a GM is not willing to trade any player in the organization, he should be fired immediately.
  3. I would really like it if I could find OPS+ adjusted for position. I suppose that might be tough to do, as a lot of guys move around between positions. If Jack Wilson (or Shortstop X) has an overall OPS+ of 75, but an OPS+ of 95 relative to other shortstops, that makes him look a lot better and paints a more meaningful picture than comparing him offensively to Albert Pujols.
  4. That sounds great, unless Peavy won't go there.
  5. Comical, comical stuff. Towers himself identified the third team. Towers: "Jim, if you can figure out a way to get me (insert name of uberprospect) from (insert name of mystery team), you can have Peavy." Hendry (to himself): "I wonder if I can get (insert name of uberprospect) for miscellaneous flotsam and jetsam."
  6. Glad to see you come around to my way of thinking.
  7. He should be fired for being cautious with a firm budget? Among other reasons, he should be fired for painting himself into a corner by spending like Mack the Knife.
  8. I wouldn't be surprised, only depressed. Can someone tell me please: Why would the Cubs be disincented to offer arby? Is someone (who is theoretically sober) really thinking that Wood isn't worth the likely arb-awarded $? If Hendry is really up against a 100% firm budget limit, Wood accepting an arb offer may consume all or most of the remaining money he has to address what he and Lou consider higher priority issues. He may be unwilling to take that risk, in which case he could decline to offer. In such a scenario, he should be fired immediately. Well, he should be fired immediately anyway, but that's a separate discussion.
  9. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/11/cubs-rumors-tea.html Don't be surprised if Hendry declines to offer arbitration to Wood.
  10. Teahen strikes out so much that he's going to have to start hitting the ball out of the ballpark if he's going to be really good.
  11. Unfortunately, not one of these guys is any good. I imagine that the Twins are being unreasonable and are asking for effective relief pitching.
  12. In Hendry's defense, he almost never subtracts useful pieces from the major league team in trades.
  13. Perfect storm of incompetence combined with bad luck: Hendry is up against a firm budget limit. Hendry is worried that Wood might accept arbitration and that his arb-determined salary would consume all his remaining payroll before he can address "higher priority matters". Hendry declines to offer Wood arbitration. NSBB finally recognizes that Hendry is one of MLB's worst GMs.
  14. Hendry would acquire him and move him back to the mound.
  15. Does anyone else think that the selection of these players may have involved a hat full of slips of paper with names written on them? Or maybe a dart board.
  16. Micah wouldn't be the worst LH portion of a platoon at first, and I definately like him as a backup who gives the starter a breather every 10-15 games, but as a starter.....no. If the Cubs trade Lee they had BETTER have a 1st baseman lined up to take over, say a certain former Reds/DBacks slugger. (Note: the Cubs won't be players for Tex hence the reason I went to possibly the 2nd best 1st base option on the market.) Adam Dunn is a much better defender in the outfield than he is at first base. Let us pause momentarily to consider the sheer magnitude of that statement.
  17. I assume that Hendry knows what Towers says he needs to get for Peavy. My guess is that Hendry has spoken to some of the "third and fourth" teams about what it would take to get the additional part(s) and, as of now, has deemed the overall cost in talent too great to continue pursuing Peavy. If, for whatever reason, the price comes down, I assume Hendry will listen, if his budget allows.
  18. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2008/11/blue-jays-to-si.html Ricciardi shot down rumors of interest in Jason Giambi, Milton Bradley, and Rafael Furcal.
