  2. I agree, but the team to watch out for is Cincinatti. With Bruce, Votto, and Phillips making up the heart of their lineup for years to come, and if Volquez has another season anything like last and Harang can be good again, and Cueto can have a breakout season, they could be legit contenders sooner than later. Dusty Baker says hello.
  3. I'm not sure that "comeback" is the right word.
  4. Brutal. Absolutely brutal.
  5. Nobody deserves that kind of money, even if they rescue a burning school bus full of orphans. However, its not about deserving, its about supply and demand, and if teams are willing to pay that much money, players are going to demand it. What if he or she were to cure cancer?
  6. There's a finite number of quality options. If a team has the room in the budget I don't see the problem. Boston has consistently gone after top tier talent and made it work within their budget while succeeding at a very high level. Why do people have a problem with that? That sort of thing is anathema to the Chicago Cubs organization and its fans.
  7. How do you know? Just because you aren't hearng rumors doesn't mean he's not getting a lot of interest. Again, why are you acting like you know this? You have no idea what is going on. Just to back this up: http://mlb.fanhouse.com/2008/12/03/theres-plenty-of-interest-in-adam-dunn/ I, too, doubt that any of those clubs are worried about losing a draft pick to sign Dunn. You know, because he wasn't offered arbitration.
  8. It's silly to speculate on trades where one team gets the two most valuable properties in the deal.
  9. 5 yrs/$10 mil., plus a $2 mil. signing bonus amortized over 5 years. I've never seen a breakdown on his contract by year (just Googled it again). I just saw it listed as $1.6 mil. without any bonus factored in, so $1.3 mil. is certainly possible. CFP, for your files: http://www.mlb4u.com/profile.php?id=1455
  10. No, but I'm sure it would be one with an option or maybe two with an option. I'm not sure how far along they are in the talks, but I'm told he's definitely their No. 1 choice for OF. Thanks, sounds good. 2 with an option sounds about right to me. Is a possible Bradley signing something we could expect to hear any time soon, or will it take time? Yes. :D Bruce rolled out of bed funny this morning.
  11. Where did you get the $2.4 number for Samardzija? I have him at $1.3.
  12. Twelve players with signed contracts for the 2009 season at a total of $123,575,000.
  13. Sullivan's got Gaudin's contract at $2 million. Good. I had him at $3.5 through arbitration. That helps.
  14. The Cubs re-signed pitcher Chad Gaudin to a one-year deal on Friday and offered arbitration to Kevin Gregg, Michael Wuertz, Neal Cotts, Reed Johnson and Ronny Cedeno. http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports_hardball/2008/12/cubs-sign-gaudi.html

  16. Anyone who has seen Bradley recently... When he is healthy enough to take the field, is he a legitimate outfield defender, or is he like Cliff Floyd out there even when he's healthy?
  17. from mlbtr Towers probably wanted seven of: Vitters, Pie, Hart, Guzman, Cedeno, Wuertz, Marquis+$, and the two guys we'd get for DeRosa. That's ridiculous.
  18. The deal won't really be completely dead until Hendry trades Marquis and replaces him with Randy Johnson. Even then, Hendry could probably open up a spot for Peavy by trading Rich Harden, but that seems unlikely. Also, one could probably call the trade dead if Hendry were to trade Vitters somewhere else.
  19. http://blogs.dailyherald.com/node/1100 In the Rule 5 draft, the Cubs lost once highly touted lefty Donnie Veal to the Pittsburgh Pirates. They're also completing a trade with the Reds, who will send the Cubs pitcher David Patton, whom they took in the Rule 5. http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/P/David-Patton.shtml
