  1. It is rather unfortunate that quality corner outfielders have become less common (correcting for how many of each are called for on a roster) - and possibly more valuable - than quality starting pitchers.
  2. Joan Rivers oh yeah, joan jett. James Jett (that took me a while) James Andrews. Thea Andrews Thea Hackett. she's a character in one of my short stories. Buddy Hackett Buddy Love. bob love Bob Marley jacob marley Jacobs Field. Sally Field. "Spider" Salley. Spiderman. Peter Parker. Parker Stevenson. McLean Stevenson. Don McLean. Donnie Moore. Clayton Moore. Royce Clayton. Royce Ring. Ringo Starr. Star Jones. Jacque Jones. Preston Wilson.
  3. Looks like the Dodgers are at it again. This is the anti-Furcal offer. Too long and too little money per season.
  4. It just seems to me that there's quite a bit of circumstantial evidence that Giles told his agent, "I'm going back to SD. Get me the best deal you can.". I don't discount the trade route. But a bunch of garbage/mediocrity for a superstar is not especially realistic. I would have hoped that something like Williams, Novoa, and Ryu/Marmol might have been able to get Wilkerson from Texas, but it seems like Daniels may have developed an unnatural attachment to Wilkerson.
  5. No one knows for sure. Some suspect that one might be with the Devil Rays for Huff and/or Lugo.
  6. What do you suggest that Hendry should have done up to this point to address RF? Please no unrealistic "sign Brian Giles" or "three way trade where we give up Rich Hill and Jerome Williams, Barry Zito goes to the Phillies and we get Bobby Abreu" nonsense. Realistic stuff, please.
  7. No, I think that this is the one that Hendry believes is fair and realistic.
  8. Hendry, from the Sun-Times: "We have inquired about trades that would have been asking people to give up what they couldn't replace." Ibanez would fit as a guy that the Mariners couldn't replace from their in-house stock of talent. Huff would not. The Devil Rays have plenty of other outfielders. They have Crawford, Baldelli, and Gomes. Gathright, although it seems like he's going to be traded. Young on the way.
  9. At the winter meetings, it was suggested that the non-Pierre trade proposal Hendry had on the table may have been with the Devil Rays for Huff and/or Lugo.
  10. Word is that Urbina has asked another inmate - some guy named "Rojo" - for a poster of Rita Hayworth.
  11. Wow. If L.A. gives Damon a fifth year...wow. Other teams have to just walk away. What are the chances that Johnny Damon is worth $13M in 2009 and 2010, when he's 38 and 39? What are the chances that Johnny Damon is worth $13 million NEXT SEASON?
  12. Plus, that guy's Tejeda, not Tejada. It's like Harry Caray talking about a former Cardinal OF/1B - "George Hendrick - no relation to Ellie Hendricks.".
  13. If the Cubs exhaust their search for a left-handed hitter, they could sign Washington free agent Preston Wilson to a one-year deal. Wilson's agent has informed the Cubs they're his top choice and that he would love to play for Dusty Baker. But the sides haven't spoken since before the winter meetings, and Wilson remains a secondary option. Ready. Set. Go.
  14. Drew wants to and needs to play CF. He has said that the sudden stopping that occurs when he runs into the corner is too hard on his knees.
  15. Craig, get the heck out of here with that reasonable analysis. That kind of thing is not welcome here.
  16. Well, as it stands now, if you platooned Corey Patterson and Jerry Hairston in RF, made Jerome Williams your 5th starter, and added Ryan Theriot to the bench, your payroll would be around $92 million, so I doubt that the payroll has been cut to $85 million. Not to let my naivete show, but it has always been said that the Cubs stood financially on their own - the payroll was not augmented by other Tribune revenue streams. If that's true, the payroll shouldn't be negatively affected by struggles in any other Tribune business lines.
  17. You put an extra 's' in there by mistake.
  18. I could be wrong, but I believe Kotsay's NTC covered only the remainder of the 2006 season. You are half right. He receives a complete NO-TRADE clause in 2005 and 2006 and a limited NO-TRADE clause in 2007 and 2008 that allows him to specify eight teams to which he could veto a trade to.
  19. Kotsay has a NTC and would have to agree to be traded to the Cubs. He might do that, but the NTC would probably still be in effect post-trade. That would limit Hendry's flexibility when he wanted to bring Pie up.
  20. I'd have to believe the Sox have the edge simply because Tejada wants to play for a winner and the Cubs are perceived as possibly the most disappointing team of the past 2 years. What does Tejada have to say about what team he's traded to?
  21. Unfortunately, AZ's going to be looking to deal one of their OLD, HIGHLY-PAID OFs, not a young, cheap one. Tho I think Shawn Green would look good in blue pinstripes next year. They can't trade Luis Gonzalez without his OK and they can trade Shawn Green to only three teams without his OK.
  22. and where exactly will Erstad play? Not 1st, not CF. If they put him in RF it would be really stupid. That leaves LF. If they do that, they should be run out of town on a rail. I'd imagine he'd be an extra guy, as he should be at this stage of his career. A few years too late, IMO.
