  1. Unforseen circumstances? What could that even be? They have a new trade target they didn't expect...money is short all of a sudden...Cuban's situation impacted the sale of the team and things are different now...weird. I hope he is wrong.
  2. I don't think it's in his contract. It has been presented that he listed those 5 cities as places he would like to go at the beginning of this offseason.
  3. I don't think that is anything different than what Towers has been saying recently. He seems to be leaving the door open with the Braves and even Yankees, but the last we heard he is focused on trying to make it work with the Cubs.
  4. According to like one or two crappy writers He may not be great, but Ken Rosenthal was the one who said the Cubs want both. So far the only person who said we are out on Peavy is some dude at MLBTR. Again, we may very well back off Peavy, but I'd wait for something more legitimate before getting too worked up.
  5. Eh. I'd like to think we could do better. Maybe if they sign Furcal, and have a Riot/Fonty platoon at 2nd and a Dero/Teahen platoon in RF...but I don't see them going with platoon's at 3 positions. I guess he fits the mold of an "athletic" lefty though, since he plays a bunch of positions.
  6. From everything I heard this offseason is the Cubs are looking for a LH power bat. So I don't think they have alot of interest in Furcal or even Brian Roberts. There have been a few reports about a "traditional leadoff hitter" like Furcal or Roberts, too. It doesn't really matter though, all I am saying is that this Levine report doesn't necessarily mean we are focused on Bradley, so much as it means we are looking at guys who didn't play RF last season to fill RF for us.
  7. Haha. I just realized that is speculation from the writer at mlbtraderumors. Seriously, that's not worth a second thought. They don't know anything, they just link to "real" reporters websites. It may be true that we back off Peavy, but I'm going to need it from a much better source.
  8. So did Levine say Bradley was the only person Hendry was looking at for RF, or Badley is the only right fielder Hendry is looking at. If it is the 2nd one, that really only eliminates Abreu. Ibanez is a left fielder Hendry could be looking at to play right field. They also could fill RF by signing Furcal and moving DeRo to RF and Theriot to 2b.
  9. Sounds like an assumption by the writer that the Cubs are out, I wouldn't worry too much about that. Towers has been very open about this. I'm sure he'll tell us if the Cubs have backed off.
  10. orrrrr... he could suck for 3 years and decide he's much better off taking that option than going on the market. Yeah, but how is that any different than just giving Dempster a 4/52 deal? He wasn't going to accept a 3 year deal, so the option doesn't really matter unless he is really good. I would much rather he signed a 3/39 deal, but that wasn't realistic.
  11. Not what I thought and I am a little shocked. well now im completely confused. towers said talks were over thursday but no one picked that up and now its saturday and tons of rumors are still coming out saying he's coming here? neato Towers didn't say that. It's just more lazy reporting.
  12. Haha. This thread gets funnier and funnier...
  13. I'm no good at the fake trades but how about this... Cubs get Peavy Padres get Michael Bowden, Marshall, Cedeno Rangers get Vitters Rex Sox Get: Max Ramirez, Wuertz Cubs get the ace they want. Padres get a good young pitcher in Bowden, and some other pieces in Marshall/Cedeno. Red Sox get a replacment for Varitek and a bullpen arm I think they would like a lot better than we do. Rangers get a very good prospect for one of their many catchers.
  14. Rosenthal again reports the Yankees are in the mix. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/8797906/Peavy-could-still-end-up-in-the-American-League?MSNHPHMA He says the Angels will be in if they can't sign Tex. He says if the Cubs sign Dempster that could end our pursuit of Peavy. The Padres might just wait out the Braves free agency... It doesn't look like this will be resolved anytime soon. Hendry, let's sign Adam Dunn while we are waiting.
  15. Personally, and not based on anything Donnie said, I don't believe Peavy will be back with San Diego. Moores is cutting payroll to 40m. His wife is taking him for half of everything he owns, and in order to make that happen, he has to unload his expensive players. I have heard rumors that Moores might even sell a portion of his ownership to satisfy his wife's demands. Peavy hasn't said anything about approving any deals to the Angels or the Yankees, and I don't think he will. If the Yankees or Angels were going to be serious players, you would think that Towers would have tried to garner more of their attention before the Thursday deadline expired. The ball is definitely in Hendry's court. He has plenty to offer, IMO I agree with you. I was just speaking to all the Donnie D stuff in my post. I believe Peavy will be traded and the Padres will not get equal value for him. With all the "approved" teams not being a fit other than us, Hendry better get this done.
  16. Did Donnie say his source said Peavy is 100% going to be a Cub? All I remember reading is that Peavy will not go to Atlanta, and it looks like the best bet is on the Cubs, followed by staying with SD, followed by a longshot like NYY. What I took out of his info was that Peavy will not go to Atlanta, and based on today's news it seems like he very well may be correct. He did post that at a time when it looked like Peavy to Atlanta was going to happen. We won't know until a trade happens (or doesn't happen), but if what I remmebr is correct, he may already be right. I assume the source is Peavy, Axelrod, or Towers. Regardless, this is good news if Atlanta is really backing off. Hopefully Hendry can close the deal soon.
  17. So does this trade make it any more realistic that the Rockies will trade Hawpe? He would be a good fit in RF for us. I assume this was more about moving Holliday while they can, rather than a firesale, but it would be nice.
  18. Nats acquire Scott Olson/Josh Willingham. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3694827 Interesting that Florida got a 2B and SS back in the trade. Would they move Ramirez or Uggla? Nevermind. Someone beat me to the punch. Lock it up.
  19. Jon Heyman just called into WFAN in NY and said Holliday has been traded to Oakland. No word on who is going to Colorado.
  20. No they Don't have to trade him. No need for the size 200 font. But there have been rumors that the owners may decide to cut payroll to somewhere around 30 some million I believe because of the divorce, which would make it extremely difficult to fit 24 other guys under that limit in addition to Peavy. Just because you put it in 200 point font doesn't mean this won't come into play this winter. Doesn't mean it will either. My best guess is someone will pony up a worthwhile offer and the deal will be made. Maybe the Brewers if they don't bring Sabathia back. Well evidently it worked because people immediately stopped talking about how we can get him for pennies on the dollar and that there was an ultimatum to trade him. We can't and there isnt. Buster pegged it at $50M and all other reports are saying $20M off 2008, which would be just over $50M, either way that still allows them to field a team with Peavy. Towers denied reports of a $40M payroll during the Giles trade debacle. Even if it was $30M off, they could still field a team with Peavy and get rid of Giles or Greene. I've shown you that they absolutely can fit Peavy and 24 other guys in $50M, you just chose to ignore it. I guess I should have put it in 200 point font. Obviously the Padres are under a payroll contraint. That point is undeniable, but it is 100% absolutely false for people to think that it is impossible or even difficult for the Padres to field a 25 man roster with Peavy and stay within those payroll constraints. I'm going to assume you are talking about me "immediatly stopping posting" once you used big font since you used my "pennies on the dollar phrase." Just to let you know, some people have jobs during the day that takes up their time and doesn't allow them to monitor internet message boards to see if someone replied to something they wrote by using really big font. As far as the Peavy issue, we disagree. I think he will get traded, and the return will be less than you expect. We'll just have to see what happens. I'm going to go spend some time with my family now, so if I don't respond to what you write, I can assure you it has nothing to do with whatever font, bold, or italics you choose to use.
  21. Exactly. The Cubs may have a chance to get a stud pitcher for pennies on a dollar. Hendry needs to make this happen. Hopefully SD feels they "have to" trade Peavy. There are not many options other than the Cubs. Pie, Marshall, Castillo, Ceda might be enough. No No No. It doesn't seem like there is a total ultimatum (and if there was then obviously no one would know about it). We aren't going to get Peavy for pennies on the dollar. We are going to have to give up a lot. How does it not seem like there isn't a total ultimatum? Why would SD even entertain the idea of trading Peavy if they didn't have to slash payroll? He is their best player, and is signed to a team friendly deal for the next 5 years. Of course we don't know for sure, it sure seems to me like they have to move him. If they do have to trade him they only have a couple options, and they might have hard time finding a better deal than one from the Cubs.

  23. I love Woody. I really do. However, if it doesn't make sense to keep kim, they need to let him go. Boston let Pedro go, they traded Nomar, they traded Manny, they will let Veritek go. Our manlove for Woody shouldn't stop Hendry from doing whatever is right. I'd love Wood back on a 2 year deal. I would much rather win without him than lose with him.
  24. If we are trading Lee just to get rid of him, I'd say the Giants are the best fit. Doesn't he live in SF? He could easily be convinced they have a bright future with their pitching, and they seem to like past their prime hitters. Unless we can get an upgrade, I don't see the point in moving Lee just to move him. If we can get Tex, by all means trade him.
  25. It won't happen, but yeah if that's what it took, I'd do it. Pie has little value right now. Colvin sucks. I'm not a big Samardzija fan, I don't think he would be a big loss. Is Atkins going to be an impact major leaguer? Jury is out on Castillo. If I am correct (and I may not be), he wasn't much of a hitter before this season, and he isn't going to hit for power. So it really boils down to Vitters, Theriot, and 3 young relief pitchers for 4 years of an ace and a SS upgrade in 09. Yeah, I'd do it. Would the Padres?
