  1. The move only makes sense if you are going to steal with Pie to get the runner in scoring position. But it sure didn't look like that was his inent. STill doesn't make sense, because in the event you do tie, you lose your best hitter. If you take the lead, you lose your best defender. ...at the far end of the defensive spectrum (I hesitate to type it for fear of a jinx), but its not as big of a deal as scoring the tying run.
  2. Did you yell CLUTCH? Maybe they just thought you were trying to buy a purse on HSN but either your phone was bad or the phone operator was deaf.

  4. He was saving his energy for the good swing. Also, Jesus we've had a crazy amount of LD outs in this game.
  5. Serioiusly? After 3 weeks of the season we have changed our minds and Theriot is acceptable? There is no way that anyone can say that the past 20 games have changed anyones true talent. Thats ridiculous.
  6. A) It was LLF. No offense, but I don't think he knows anything about the Giants minor league system B) He did say "their top prospects" :D
  7. Didn't Sabean already publicly put him on the market, stating that he wanted some bats in exchange? Granted, that was before Zito began another year as Sucky Zito, but still...Sabean's already exposed himself as being open to it, depending on if the right deal comes around. Sabean isn't known as a fleecer like Beane, or as unreasonable like TB. It was last offseason. Riccardi offered Rios for Cain and was told that the Giants would rather trade Lincecum because they are worried about his injury possibility. Sabean sat on the offer for a couple weeks but ended up turning it down. Or at least thats how it all played out on the interwebs. So, yeah, Lincecum could definitely be traded. I don't think it'll be to the cubs, but you never know. If any team needed quantity over quality, it'd be the Giants. Isn't Villalona eventually going to have to move to first? We have a lot more interesting trading pieces in the minors at 3B than we do at 1B.
  8. Ha, and Lou was quoted as saying he would have given his left arm for Spillborghs. Good thing he wasn't willing to give Rich's.
  9. I just asked the same question. I'm getting sound on the regular channel, but I'm not getting any sound on the HD channel. Ditto working now...at least during the commercials. its good, turn to it now

  12. You gotta say what kinda league. If OBP is a stat, you gotta go with Fukudome. If its a deeper keeper you gotta go with Upton.
  13. Or if you visit less shadily named websites than vegas watch, you might have stumbled across this today. http://www.insidethebook.com/ee/index.php/site/article/do_i_care_that_the_tigers_are_7_13_the_ws_are_11_7_or_that_flo_is_12_7/ If you think about it though, I think the vegas guy has it wrong by using pythag instead of actual record like mgl does. If you are trying to predict what the actual record of the team is going to be at the end of the season at this stage, just take their actual record and pro-rate the rest of the season using whatever projection system you want. Pythag tells us how many games the team should have won up until this point, but frankly, we don't care how many games the team should have won since we KNOW how many games the team has won. Whether a team is 21-1 by winning all 1 run games or 21-1 by blowing out their opponents, I don't care. I know the team won 21 games. I don't need to, nor should I correct for that. The proration of the projection system over the next 140 games is going to take care of that regression to the mean in luck.
  14. He started most of last year until it was obvious that the Yankees needed him in the bullpen down the stretch at which point they moved him into that role at AAA. Johan Santana was a reliever for the Twins quite a bit. The whole point of keeping him as a reliever for the first half and then moving him into the rotation in the second was to keep his IP at roughly 30 more innings than he threw last season (~115). So he pitches 30 innings as a reliever in the first half, 100 as a starter in the second and the rest is for the playoffs.
  15. Chamberlain is better than Marmol. IF he is its' only by the smallest of margins. Its bigger than the smallest of margins.
  16. Good lord, is this like a 6 team league or something? 8 teams. I drafted Webb, Haren, Smoltz, Wang, Hill, Kazmir and added the others later. 32 major league teams, 8 fantasy teams = you need 4 closers Crappy teams don't necessarily offer less save chances to their closers, thats a big myth. Yes, absolutely, trading your starting pitching depth for closers is a necessity. Do you have IP limits, is this h2h, etc... Keep Webb, Smoltz, and Gallardo for sure though.
  17. According to everyone who has watched him pitch and analyzed it, thats what it sounds like to me. In like 2 weeks people are going to start talking about how hes going to be a super duper sleeper next year, ironically rendering him not a sleeper.
  18. I actually think Hendry does a pretty decent job of that... Harben for Nevin Ceda for Walker Berg for Lawton Ascanio for Ohman and Infante Am I missing any?
  19. Well the rumor was that the Rays were interested in Murton and the Cubs wanted top pitching talent in return. Obviously, Price can't be traded, and McGee and Davis are untouchable, but I'd try for Niemann. I'm an unabashed Niemann lover, so I guess I'm biased, but he'd certainly add great depth for the rotation in case of injury/regression as well as allow us feel better about trading pitching at the deadline. I think in another thread we talked about Brignac, but frankly Murton isn't enough for him. Another major league ready SS on a team desperately in need of a corner OF is Brent Lillibridge (and hes blocked taboot). If I were running the team, I'd definitely be inquiring about him.
  20. I think Sabean is pulling a Littlefield. On his way out hes going to sink the mofo. Hes also probably pulling a Dusty by saying, fine you want a youth movement, we'll bring these guys up and they'll suck hardcore and then you'll be crying for Rich Aurilia (like what Dusty said about not playing rookies because he didn't have any worth playing). The only problem with that is that Sabean is the one thats responsible for the organization and its minor league players (and that he was the one not producing any rookies for Dusty).
  21. The only teams that are experiencing extended-extended Spring Training are those playing the Giants.
  22. The guy should get a gigantic pay raise from the league minimum. The 10K foot arbitration summary is that a players first 3 seasons he is a) under the teams control and b) the team can pay him whatever they want at or above the league minimum (except for super 2 players, who qualify by basically starting their first year in the majors from day 1 and not getting sent down). For the next 3 years "a" still applies, but either the team and the player need to agree on a salary or the case goes between an arbitrator where the team submits a number and the player submits a number and both sides argue their case to an arbitrator as to why they believe their number is right. The arbitrator then decides which one is right and the decision is binding (ie the team says 7M, the player says 10M, the arbitrator can only chose from those to numbers). Roughly speaking this is how much a player makes in arbitration as compared to his salary as a FA Super 2--20% Normal 1st year arbi---40% Normal 2nd year arbi---60% Normal 3rd year arbi---80% Digging a little deeper there is the issue of comparables. That is the heart of what is argued at the arbitration process. So that catcher would argue that similar players at similar ages got paid X so he should get paid X. Now that player that you are describing (assuming not a super 2), is hitting arbitration after his 3rd year coming off 2 ridiculously amazing years and one mearly awesome year. I'm assuming this is supposed to be some sort of comparable to Joe Mauer, so lets look at his numbers. He was a super 2 player going into 2007 (age 24 year) and even though he settled on a long term deal, we know his arbi submissions were 4.5M and 3.3M. According to tangos rough estimate he thought he was worth 22.5, his team thought he was worth 16.5 in the FA market (hes probably somewhere inbetween), so the sniff test works. So, if he wasn't a super 2, then in his first year of arbi, we would expect him to want to be paid roughly 9M and his employer to offer roughly 6.6M. As an aside, as part of Mauers long term deal, he got 3.75 in what was his super 2 year, and will get 6.25 this year. As you can see, arbi and especially pre-arbi players are giving up a lot of money for security. Its very quickly becoming the trend. To your question, yeah, I'd be very happy to be a cubs fan with Joe Mauer on my team.
  23. I put this in the gamthread but since we are talking about rotoworld making fun of the pirates.... That probably wasnt on purpose, but even when the Pirates aren't playing the cubs, they lose to the cubs.
  24. None of us know, but it's obvious that Cedeno isn't going to start for the Cubs. If Hu could be acquired for Fontenot plus a mid-level pitcher, he could be another option for SS next year (or this year if Lou ever tires of Theriot). Coletti is pretty [expletive], but not that [expletive]. I guess a good comp is that the dodgers wanted Esteban German, but weren't willing to give up Hu for him.
  25. Guess this belongs here, as evidently the Pirates lose to the cubs even on days they don't play them.
