I'm all for honoring the dude. Give every player in the majors jersey patches if you want to. I just don't see the point in retiring the number if it's going to be allowed to be worn. I know it's a different issue, but I'd be ticked if a Bull wore MJ's 23 no matter what the intent was. Do you know who Jackie Robinson is? Thank you for addressing the point. I know full well who Jackie is. He deserves honoring. But if you're retiring a number league-wide, retire it 365 days a year, not 364. You might as well let people wear it year-round anyway - that's what a lot of people were doing before Bud retired it. My question absolutely addressed the point. While Michael Jordan and Jackie Robinson were both greats in their respective sport, thats where their similarities end. Its completely ignorant to try to make that analogy. They aren't honoring Jackie Robinson for being an awesome baseball player, they are honoring him for breaking the color barrier in modern baseball and his influence on American society to end segregation.
