  1. Calling Jim Bowden... Kidding aside, he'd be the first person I would call, given the organizations hatred of Ryan Church. Kearns is about as unhappy as player can be in Washington (of course this helps in luring Dunn). Bowden just might be the guy who will trade those two for Dempster, Jones, $, and some minor league talent. Dempster can shore up their pen or can be used as a starter. I think thats what the cubs will end up using him for, but there definitely seems a realistic way for us to get those two unhappy and unappreciated players from Washington. In terms of this rumor, this is exactly the type of insignificant move that this team has shown us the past couple years. Would this move improve the team? Maybe. Is it a first stepping stone to help turn the worst team in the NL into a competitor? Definitely not.
  2. I don't think anyone is saying that Theriot is going to be able to do next year over a full season what he has done so far this season, which is hit .336/.415/.536 in 125 ABs. So this argument against Theriot starting at 2B next season doesn't hold water. Let's look at Theriot's minor league numbers... OBP- 2004: .367, 2005: .365, 2006: .367 AVG- 2004: .273, 2005: .304, 2006: .304 SB/CS- 2002: 32/8 in 489 ABs, 2003: 30/13 in 398 ABs, 13/11 in 330 ABs, 2005: 24/10 in 448 ABs, 2006: 14/3 in 280 ABs (25/5 in 405 ABs including the majors) What dkwg did say, is that everything we have seen thus far from Theriot shows us that he is ready to play in the bigs and succeed. I don't think he is in the class of players that can be "penciled in". I reserve that for guys like Lee, Barrett, Ramirez (if he stays) and Murton (if he isn't traded away). But I do think that Theriot's minor league numbers plus the 125 ABs in the bigs this year show us a batter who can be counted on to get on base about 35-37% of the time while hitting around .300, stealing 30-40 bases and playing a good defensive 2B. By that description, he is currently the best 2B on the team and better than a lot of starting 2B out there. I have no quarrel with the idea of aquiring a better 2B than Theriot, but the evidence supports that Ryan Theriot is ready to be a solid lead-off hitter/secondbaseman in the major leagues. CW, if you expect a 1:1 minor league to major league translation, then can I expect you to fully endorse Michael Restovich to start in RF in 2007?
  3. Does Sullivan realize that if Lee would have moved to Boras it would have HELPED out chances of getting him? Hendry is one of the very few GMs that has a decent if not amicable relationship with Boras. A move to Boras would have eliminated much of our competition if we were to go after him.
  4. Of course this is all assuming that Pierre made it through to the Phils. I'd have to think theres a couple teams that would have chosen him before the Phils.
  5. Ohh how the feeling on Sori has changed. Just a year ago he was public enemy number one here. I'm weary of investing a ton of money and years into a guy who put up neifi-esque numbers on the road as recently as last year and the year before.
  6. Cat would be wonderful, hes one of the best value players in the league. But this is Hendry we are talking about. A more realistic option would be Nixon. We'd pay more, but if used properly, would still be worth the money. I'd have to believe that our MI would be Cedeno and Izturis, so unfortunately I don't see us being able to improve at 2b. I think we can look across town to see how Pie would be next year if we brought him up. I'd like to take a more conservative approach and leave him in AAA for another year (or a good part of a year) and let him continue to hit like he has the last couple months. Dave Roberts is a guy who could do a nice job being a placeholder for Pie. Also, the cubs had interest in him a couple years ago. Roberts Nixon/Murton Lee Ramirez Barrett Jones/Resto Izturis Cedeno Yeah, there are two auto outs, but I think thats just the reality of our lineup next year. I think this is the best we could do, while also affording a Schmidt/Zito.
  7. Beyond the working the count aspect of an AB, moving runners over is often the worst case scenario of a "productive" AB. Obviously, hitting a HR is at the top of the list of a productive AB and goes down the line past the singles into the BB catagory. The difference between a BB and moving runners over depends on who is hitting behind them as putting runners on 1B and 2B rather driving them in on a sac. fly isn't as productive when there's a poor hitter behind them. More often than not, I'd take my chances with the BB though as it gives a better indication that the pitcher might be in trouble. In order. (my list of tech. productive ABs) HR TR DB S BB HBP Sac. Fly Sac. bunt/moving runners over. AB that worked the count but did not result in any of the above. This is an interesting point that has not been discussed...but what if we isolate what the batter has the most control over. Either a homerun, walk, ball in play, or strike out. Now, that is truly my preference in order. What is the average BABIP, like .280, .300? Something like that. It all depends on the hitter, but I don't think an average hitter gets enough triples and doubles to make up for the 70 or so percent of the time you make an out when you put the ball into play. Some of those outs will be productive and move runners over so they are better than strikeouts and putting the ball in play gives the defense a chance to make an error, or move a guy from first to third. But again, I haven't run any analyses (but would be very interested to read some), but it'd be hard to believe that would create enough value to make up for making an out 70% of the time. Additional value of a walk is that it requires at least 4 pitches, whereas a ball in play may only require one.
  8. I haven't taken a look at our financials, but thats about 40M in additional salary even taking into consideration losing Maddux's 9M. I don't think we will be able to take on that much. Ohh and Schmidt is not going to sign a two year deal.
  9. THis is my league's first year as keepers. We were wondering when is the normal time to declare your keepers for the next year. A couple weeks before the draft?
  10. Yes, I think Gonzalez could be high on Hendry's list. Hendry apparently was very impressed with him before hiring Baker. Secondly, Hendry has tried to model the Cubs after the Braves. Unfortunately for Cub fans, Hendry doesn't really understand how the Braves have done what they've accomplished. Either way, hiring a lieutenant of Cox makes sense in that regard. That should be the name of a bar just southeast of Wrigley.
  11. There's no way anyone pries away Brian McCann. we will have an excess of good young pitching this offseason. The Braves will not be motivated to trade McCann. He's young, good, and cheap. So unless we're willing to offer Marshall, Marmol, Paweleck, Guzman, Pie, Murton, Prior, Gallagher and maybe a few more, we should give it up. Although Saltimachabachitamiko has struggled this year, the braves still probably have the best catching prospect in baseball, so after next year, they very well may be selling McCann.
  12. With two automatic outs in Izturis and Cedeno in the lineup we cannot afford to have a "defensive" catcher, which means a guy who can't hit. With the progression of offensive middle IF and CFs, teams wanting to contend cannot have two automatic outs in their lineup, let alone 3. Especially with the uncertainty of our pitching.
  13. Yeah, you had it backwards..I was the one with Giambi. And like I said, for me there were no keeper implications (we are allowed to keep 5 players only). I ended up talking him into replacing Pettite with Clemens so in the final deal I received Clemens and Francis for Giambi, Luis Gonzalez and Barfield (both of whom are bench players on my team). There likely will be quite a backlash in my league, but it was a good trade for both teams. He gets a keeper for no keepers and I get two excellent pitchers for a guy who was dragging down my average. And I traded Lackey for Berkman (right before Lackey started sucking) in preparation to trade Giambi. My next mission is to trade Chipper and spare parts (I have Teahen and Encarnacion) for an elite catcher and a closer.
  14. Im in a 5x5 league and have Giambi, but desperately need to improve my BA and need starting pitchers. I was just offered Petitte and Jeff Francis for Giambi. I'm weary of Petitte, but he's had 9Ks/9IP and a 1.19 WHIP over the last month. The other guy also has Clemens and I've been trying to improve my offer to replace Petitte with him, but so far to no avail. Its a keeper league, and I won't keep Giambi, but he will (so I think he should pay a premium). I am very close to first and although hes only one place out, point-wise he's pretty far away from finishing in the money, but hasn't given up yet. So I'm the one who really needs to make the trade, not him. Thoughts?
  15. My God, this thread makes me so happy that I haven't had the time to come here very often this season...I'm still waiting to hear CubColt and dvdd say they were just joking... I thought the line about Walker being light hitting (especially when talking about Cedeno) was surely an overt key to display sarcasm. And Izturis MVP at the end of May? I've never heard of MVP talk in May #1, #2 Neifi was probably hitting 300 at the end of May (ok he wasnt but he was close), should he have been MVP? 2 months of decent hitting vs 8 years of suckitude. Unless this team plans to get Webb, Lowe, Wang, and Westbrook, I can't see how this isn't a debilitating move.
  16. Agreeance
  17. Maddux and Guzman/Hill for Joel Guzman. Then I guess we go into next year assuming Joel will play LF for the Cubs, or maybe play 3b if Ramirez is gone? His power potential would be nice to have in the lineup at his price. I meant for him to play 3B with the assumption we trade ARAM and he doesnt resign with us in the offseason.
  18. Anyone who thinks we can get LaRoche for Maddux is absolutely ridiculous. Maddux and Pie probably won't even get LaRoche. If we could package Maddux and some of our wonderful minor league pitching talent for Guzman, who apparently the Dodgers have soured a bit on, that would be ideal.
  19. Per rotoword http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=MLB&id=2304 Is Lidle going to slot into their rotation and Shacon to the pen?
  20. We can match that, but it wouldn't be worthwhile. I really like Tejada and think he could still help this team for the near future, but if Angelos doesn't want to accept Aybar and Santana for him, the kind of package he would accept likely would decimate almost any farm system. If Tejada was a FA, I wouldnt be too thrilled to sign him to a 3 yr 38M contact, let alone give up very quality ML talent to acquire him and his contract. PASS.
  21. Yeah, I have both. Traded Lackey and his .00045 Opponents BABIP for Berkman. But now I'm trying to trade Giambi for Jeter.
  22. Nothings really "great" about him, but he does have the ability to get on base and hit for power that would be nice to see on this team. Interestingly, both this year and last hes had horrendous Mays that have really hurt his #s. The astros may be able to use Nevin to platoon with Lamb. Nevin alone wont get Lane, but there might be a match.
  23. Wanted to start a thread with Q and A's for who will be the better player. I'll start out with Giambi vs. Berkman
  24. Definitely!!! I watched the Yanks/Braves game tonight over the cubs because I have Giambi and Chipper (its lovely when your two players have all the RBIs in a game :D ). My Fantasy team's name is the "Logan White Honkys" (first year of a keeper league). So as you can imagine I'm a fan of the Dodgers with their farm system. Like the Indians a lot too, one could say that their year is even more disappointing than the Cubs' though. I liked the Athletics in the late 80s and now once again in the Beane era. Was a huge huge fan of what the Marlins did this offseason so will be rooting for them in years to come as well. So out of those 4 teams 1 is really good at rebuilding through trades, 1 is really good at rebuilding from the draft/scouting, 2 are really good at both and the cubs really suck in all departments.
  25. Well, that's all on Hendry. Just because someone tells you to jump off a bridge doesn't mean you do it. What if you hired that person to tell you to do it? And then, while brutally falling, hitting rocks and such on the way down you continue to sing his praises and insinuate that you would like to pay him more money for more years to come? I think you just agreed with me. Hendry is a moron, and IMO, a much bigger problem than Baker, although both need to go. Yes, I was further expounding on your point. I very much man crushed Hendry, but began to sour when I realized that his amazing moves were completely negated by his horrible ones. At that point, I became indifferent. However, now I realize that the finger pointing at Baker should go straight through him to Hendry and MacPhail. Although none of us have inside info as to the degree in which Baker influences Hendry's decision, but at the root of the matter, Hendry is letting him do it. A) by hiring him and rumoring his extension, and B) by simply allowing him to have an alleged influence roster construction. I think we all wish we had a GM that thought like us and sometimes Hendry is that guy, and that makes us forgive him. But I think, aside from all player acquisition, development, and so on, Hendry has done significant damage to the organization by handing the keys over to Dusty. And the infuriating part is that he is so bull-headed that he cannot realize his mistake and continues to support him implicitly. Dusty is a big reason why this organization is currently crippled and depending on how far his influence reaches down within the organization (I'm guessing it stops at Von Joshua), he could be crippling the team for years to come. But the big reason why Dusty was here, is here, and possibly could be here is Hendry.
