  1. Jones homer. Barrett grounds out to first. Murton strikeout swinging. Cedeno ground out to second. 3-0.
  2. Jacque Jones with a bomb over the wall down the right field line off Hill leading off the second. 3-0.
  3. Bouncing a lot of curveballs 5 feet in front of the plate.
  4. In the top of 2, Wellemeyer gets Restovich on a called third strike, McGehee on a fly to center and Blanco on a fly to left. He had the hitters out in front with offspeed.
  5. If Grissom is healthy and has any kind of spring, he WILL make the team.
  6. Aramis takes a called third to end the inning, probably on pitch count.
  7. Hill is wild. Walks to Pierre and Walker followed by a 2-RBI double by Lee to left-center. I'll write about it for tomorrow and provide updates as I can today.
  8. Your A team lineup is: Pierre, Walker, Lee, Ramirez, Jones, Barrett, Murton, Cedeno and Hairston as DH
  9. Not to start an intrasquad game thread here, but Guzman went 1-2-3 in the first, getting Pie to pop out and striking out Neifi and Grissom.
  10. Link. Thanks for the plugs, Vance. Overall, this camp is the most businesslike one I've seen in a few years. I know it's very early, but there is a quiet confidence building here. Now, as Soul says, they have to go out and do it when it counts.
  11. Thank you, thank you. All the credit goes to Dempster for setting me up. He's truly one of the nicest guys I've come across over the years. Let's hope he can duplicate last year.
  12. No reporter who is actually in Mesa has written that.
  13. There is a lot of camaraderie among the writers. We have to live with each other for eight months! The traveling writers are myself, Kiley, Sully, Jeff Vorva of the Daily Southtown (about half the road games) and Carrie Muskat of MLB.com. We all get on each other's nerves at times, I'm sure. It's a lot less crowded on the road because the Chicago TV and radio stations generally don't travel. We compete with each other, but we remain civil and friendly. It's that way in most cities. In some cities, I've seen it get a little to a lot nasty, with guys not even speaking to one another.
  14. Everybody's got the same access to the same guys. Sully sometimes goes off on his own program. I think his interests and what piques his interest might be a little different. A lot of times, there is a "story of the day," such as when a key player gets hurt or holds a formal press conference, so everybody writes it. As the spring and the season go along, I think you'll see things diverge a little bit among everybody. Last spring, I did some "enterprise" pieces on stats vs. scouts and on non-roster players. Then I wrote a behind-the-scenes piece on how Jim Hendry got Nomar on July 31, 2004. I'm more into the sabermetrics stuff than the other guys. Kiley seems to like controversy a little more. And Sully seems to like some quirky stuff, historical stuff and ballpark stuff. But no, nobody's frozen out Sully from the Cubs because of stuff he's written.
  15. I've had a Hall of Fame vote for four years. I sense a Sammy question coming.
  16. What does your work schedule look like during Spring Training? Are you with the travel from Feb. 15th through the end? How many articles a week will you be writing? Keep up the great work. Busy day today. Three stories for Thursday's paper. I'm here from Feb. 13 until the end. My family visits in the middle of March, so that's nice. I usually write a main story and a "notebook" every day down here. Sometimes it's three stories. It's good duty in very nice weather. So no complaints here.
  17. Thanks for the comments. It's beautiful here in Mesa. I'll continue holding people's feet to the fire.
  18. The Cubs certainly will attempt to sign Pierre during spring training. It takes two to make a deal, but Hendry will make an offer.
  19. I thought they were going to try and lock-up Pierre long term. This doesn't mean they can't. They've done this lots of times _ avoid arbitration and then sign a guy to a multiyear deal in spring training. they did it last season with Aramis, and nearly gave me a heart attack when they waited til opening day to sign him long term to that goofy contract. BTW, Bruce, has there been any indication of Aramis wanting to exercise that opt out clause? Ramirez repeatedly has said he wants to stay with the Cubs. There's been no talk of him opting out, but if he hits 40 HR and drives in a ton of runs with an OBP of .356, all bets might be off. I'm sorry Mr. Miles. I understand that you write for an established newspaper. How do you know what OBP is? Nicely played. Stick with the Daily Herald, the only paper in town that routinely gives OBP figures in stories and dares to dip in to the dangerous waters of sabermetrics.
  20. Terms already posted on this board are correct. Thanks. Is it looking more likely that Walker remains with the team or do you see him dumped in spring training? Also, do you anticipate an extension happening with Pierre in ST or will that be after the season? Finally, are the Cubs attempting to sign Zambrano for only one year or to a multi-year deal? The way it's going, Walker probably goes to spring training with the Cubs. Who knows? It might be the best trade they never made. The Cubs likely will talk with Pierre and Lee in spring training about extensions. For now, the Cubs will sign Zambrano to a one-year deal. He's not a free agent after this season, so there's no big hurry. He's got a new agent, and I'm sure they'd like to see how things play out. If he has another good year, I see the Cubs talking about a long term with him next winter.
  21. Terms already posted on this board are correct.
  22. I don't know if the Cubs necessarily "want" Graffanino. They like him and would probably take him for not a whole lot. I'm sure they'd see him more as a 3B backup and utility guy. The Walker situation still isn't settled either.

  25. I also think Bruce Miles is an amazing reporter. I'll try not to let it go to my head. LOL
