    Jake Fox is among the best young players I've ever dealt with. I did a story on the Cubs' young catchers a few days ago, and all were extremely enthusiastic and cooperative. You can't beat that.

    Lots of rain here. They'l decide by 10 local time whether to call this one. The Cubs' lineup: Pierre, CF Walker 2B Jones, RF Restovich, 1B Murton, LF Grissom, DH Perez, SS McGehee, 3B Kopitzke, C Guzman, P If we get rained out, Maddux will start Sunday, with Guzman following him into the game.

    Eyre works a scoreless fourth. Cubs don't score in their half. In the fifth, Brownlie comes in to pitch. Laird triples off the hitter's background in center. Arias hits a sac fly. Wilkerson flies out. Brown lays down a bunt single. Blalock flies out. 2-1 Cubs.

    he saved the third inning! Just like he saved last year for the Cubs! Tough crowd.

    Bottom 3: Pierre grounds out 4-3. Perez flies to right. Grissom singles to right and gets caught stealing. Eyre coming into pitch the 4th for the Cubs. I'll have to head to the clubhouse soon to talk with Maddux. I'll try to give you guys a fill later.

    Three walks in one inning. Is he bouncing them in the dirt or just missing? Sounds like rust. Just missing. Very rusty. Fooled Dellucci with a called third with one out and bags loaded.

    Dempster in for the third. Walks Wilkerson. Brown flies out and Blalock singles. Nevin grounds into a 5-3 double play as your guy Neifi makes a deft play snag the ball, step on the bag and fire.

    Maddux walked three in the first and left the bases loaded. Went 1-2-3 in the second. Cubs went 1-2-3 in the first. In the second, Jones grounded out, Walker singled to left center, Murton singled to left and Mabry drove both home with a double. Cedeno reached on an infield single as the SS and 3B collided. Anderson 463 DP. 2-0 Cubs.

    In all fairness, this is Mabry's first game of the spring. He's had a bad back. Hey Bruce, Do you know if Sing has gotten in any work in the OF at all this spring?? I know they were experimenting with him out there at the end of last year at West Tenn..... He's had some work there during drills this spring.

    I don't know if the OBP stuff on TV is new, but Len's into stats and sabermetrics and such. We talk all the time. He's an extremely hard working broadcaster who does his homework every day and gets to the park early.
