  1. Cubs will go this way: Pierre, CF Hairston, 2B Walker, 1B Ramirez, 3B Jones, RF Barrett, C Murton, LF Cedeno, SS Ryu, P
  2. The A's go this way: Kendall, C Scutaro, SS Bradley, RF Chavez, 3B Payton, CF Johnson, 1B Kielty, LF Rouse, 2B Harden, P
  3. They always bring minor-leaguers up, even more for split-squad games. Luis Montanez homered last night. Mike Fontenot is up for one of today's game. The more bodies the better. Are you at Hohokam or Surprise, Bruce? Do you have an assistant at the game you aren't able to attend? I'm in Mesa. An assistant? I wish. The Cubs give us inning-by-inning reports from the other game. They staff it with a media-relations person.
  4. Because of his work over the last two years, the Cubs are doing everything to give him the benefit of the doubt. But this is a huge week for him.
  5. General managers usually have the final say. Hendry will make the call, taking into consideration the input from his staff, much like any other business. Grissom's non-roster status doesn't help him, especially with the Cubs having to add Wade Miller to the 40-man by Opening Day.
  6. Marshall is pitching the home game against Oakland.

  9. New Cubs lineup (D-Lee out to take care of some family stuff) Pierre, CF Walker, 1B Jones, rF Barrett, C Mabry, 3B Murton, LF Hairston, 2B Perez, SS Zambrano, P
  10. No need to worry. It's spring training. Cedeno is the starting shortstop.

  12. You're quite welcome. I enjoy it, and I learn a lot from you guys, too.
  13. That's a good question. In fact, I had my Jerry Hairston story written a week ago and planned to use it on the off-day in the schedule. But then Mr. Prior got hurt, and out went that idea. I picked yesterday as the day to run it. I haven't seen the other papers yet, so I don't know what they've written. Some days, the story line is obvious. Derrek Lee played in his first game since the WBC. So it was natural for all of the reporters (radio, Web site, newspapers) to want to to talk to him. In fact, he was waiting for us. If it's Derrek Lee, it's a big story, and everybody is going to "lead" with it. For the night games, we have limited access. We talked to Dusty before the other night's game, and the subject of Grissom came up. It was my "lead" note because of the 25-man roster issue and Dusty's history of preferring veterans. We have access to just about anybody who is there on most days. The Trib ran a Dempster story the other day. I ran a Dempster story last month. On some days, the story of the day jumps out at you. On other days, you pretty much decide on your own.
  14. Mariners 6th (Eyre pitching) Craig strikes out Vina flies to left Bloomquist strikes out Clubhouse time. See you guys later.
  15. Cubs fifth (Gonzalez pitching) Hairston grounds 6-3 Perez homers to left Lee strikes out Ramirez walks Barrett gets a tough-hop single past the SS to center field, Ramirez to third. PH Pie lines a double to the RF corner, scoring Ramirez and sending Barrett to third. Murton singles to left, scoring Barrett and Pie; Murton advances on Gonzalez's wild pitch Pagan grounds out 5-3 6-1 Cubs
  16. Rusch is still pitching. One hit allowed through 5.
  17. Mariners fifth Dobbs strikes out Rivera flies to right Ransom strikes out
  18. Cubs fourth Mabry leads off with a line single. He steals second and takes third on a throwing error by the catcher. Murton walks on a 7-8 pitch plate appearance. Nice. Murton CS 1-4-3 as he gets caught off first base Pagan strikes out. Rusch strikes out.
  19. They continue to talk. That's about it. I don't think anything is imminent, but my gut feeling is that something gets done. Do you think talks were slowed up b/c of the shoulder? btw, thanks for the pbp. :D No, the shoulder had nothing to do with the talks "slowing." The agent has other clients, and both sides are taking their time.
  20. They continue to talk. That's about it. I don't think anything is imminent, but my gut feeling is that something gets done.

  23. Rusch seems to be crusing a bit now. Good to see it. How's he looking Bruce? Actually pretty good. He's working fast and his command has picked up.
  24. Mariners 3rd: DH Casey Craig (late switch as M's use DH) strikes out Vina grounds 4-3 Bloomquist flies to right.
  25. Cubs 2nd: Mabry leads off with a double down the RF line Murton pops foul to first Pagan flies to center, Mabry to third Rusch flies to center. Still 1-1
