    Shawon Dunston was actually pretty terrible at baseball. I hadn't really looked at his stats very much prior to today. He didn't do anything particularly well. ~72% on stolen bases. I guess you could say that about a lot of Cubs from the 90s.

    Most of the time Soriano is the gaping hole in the middle. It's not his fault he's overpaid though.

    That's what I suspect. Plus there really isn't any good football in Kentucky and won't be forever, so you'd get all 8 of the TVs in that state. Someone get Big Jim on the phone. :((((((((((( I think Stoops was a great hire for UK. Brooks showed that you can win a couple of games in conference, dominate weaker out of conference schools, and go to a bowl game every year. Most Kentuckians are happy with that. The test for Stoops will be if he can go beyond a 7-5 record and the Music City Bowl. If he can, excellent. If not, this was probably a bad decision on his part. Unless he turns Kentucky around and goes beyond what the program did under Brooks, I don't see how he could use this job as a stepping stone type gig. He would have been better off staying at FSU (or waiting for somewhere like Wisconsin).

    It was lousy longer than it's been good. You can't use the 200PA stabilization rule here. I believe your math is a bit off, Tim.

    I think it is wise to look at Castro's splits this year, particularly when discussing his walk rate. The month of May was awful when it came to his walk rate: 1.7%. I've never been a fan of the whole "hey, you take x out, and his numbers look like y!" methodology, but I think it's a fair thought process when a particular time frame is a total outlier. Since May, his walk rates are: 4.3%, 5.8% and 8.8% (34 PA). Yes, his walk rate is still 4%, but when look at younger players, it is important to identify in-season trends. According to FanGraphs, walk rates are reliable after 200 PA. Since June 1st, Castro has a walk rate of 5.5% (254 PA). His LD% is down his last 140 PA or so, but that is just variance in my opinion. It is likely he will "get hot" and his LD%/BABIP will rebound. edit: thanks sneakyp

    They're off the charts defensively this year. Soriano is? Then how is he so low? I see Barney's deal now, I guess. Am I wrong to think the two measure defensive metrics differently? Maybe bWAR uses a different one than fWAR does, plus maybe puts more emphasis on it as well? fWAR uses UZR (Total Zone Rating prior to 2002). bWAR uses something called "Defense Runs Saved with Batted Ball Timer" by Baseball Info Solutions 2003 and after, and TZR before that.     have you looked at this peripherals this year? i don't know if he can continue to keep walks so low, but he is pretty much off the charts right now.

    Wait, isn't this redundant? How many people are saying Alou definitely wouldn't have caught it if there were no people there? Of course he likely would have caught the ball if there were no fans; a batter is likely to get a hit if there are no defenders besides the pitcher, too. Seems like most of the debate is whether or not fan interference took place. That said, even that screen grab doesn't settle anything. Unless the ball suddenly drops straight down or Alou is still rising up/back in that shot it looks like it easily could have hit off the top of the glove or popped out if he managed to get it in there. if Alou catches the ball in the presence of no fans, but does not catch it in the presence of fans, isn't that by definition fan interference? Not if he's reaching into the stands. That was always the debate before, was when the fan interference occurred and if it obstructed a ball in play or in the stands. right. i didn't think about that.

    Could very well be the case. Won't count Brady out yet but it was sure a show those 2 put on tonight. Rivers belongs in that group as well. Maybe I should just hop on the bandwagon and become a Packers fan. They have two former UK players in Masthay and Cobb. Watching Rodgers, Jennings, Finley, et al every week would be much better than watching something like this from the Bengals over and over: 1st and 10: 3 yard run up the middle by Benson 2nd and 7: 2 yard run up the middle by Benson, followed by a cloud of dust 3rd and 5: 4 yard pass INC to Brian Leonard 4th and 5: punt

    i'm nitpicking here, but Brandon Wood was ranked #3 by BA following the 2005 season. to me, for Castro to have a better career than Trout (this is assuming Trout doesn't absolutely suck), he needs to at least double his BB% (he is trending in the opposite direction here) and hit 15ish HRs. if Castro does those things and improves his defense, i think Castro will end up the better player given his position scarcity. if we're projecting both of them going forward based on their statistics so far, though, i don't see how one can come to the conclusion that Castro is better than Trout.

    Bourn has been a five win player the last couple of years, and he's on pace to exceed that this year. i'd love to have a 5+ WAR player in CF

    i am surprised by Reed Johnson's 2006 season every time i look at his page on fangraphs. 4.5 WAR.
