  1. We are also assuming that they won't seek an upgrade at catcher or in CF/LF. I think they will, and as I mentioned earlier, I'd go after Mike Morse on a two-year deal with third year option. You can pencil him in for .700-plus OPS.
  2. That's a sort of vague statement. More accurate, IMO, is whoever mentioned that we were dragged down by the significant playing time afforded to Olt, Schierholtz, Lake, Barney, Jackson, etc. Just replacing those guys with someone - anyone - who can post a .700 OPS or better / ERA+ of 90 or better and adding Lester probably makes us a contender for a wildcard right away.

  4. Best realistic offseason scenario, in order of importance: 1. Sign Lester or Scherzer (I prefer the later, FWIW) 2. Sign Maddon / term. Renteria 3. Sign Morse or Markakis (I prefer the former on a two year deal with a mutual third year option) EDIT: This scenario includes my bias against NL teams giving long-term deals to FA catchers in their 30's.
  5. Pass rush with 4. Yeah, the secondary certainly could be better, but when your pass rush can't even make a pro QB shuffle his feet a bit in the pocket its pretty much over for your defense.
  6. At this point I've lost confidence in Trestman. Based on how they are playing its reasonable to believe the team has tuned him out. Its less about the record and more about the fact that they aren't competitive in these games they are losing. If that changes over the next 8 games then maybe he gets another year, but to me this is the kind of game that gets a head coach fired. Emery will still be here, IMO. History indicates the McCaskeys won't overhaul the entire football operation in one offseason. Most of their GM's get two bites at the apple.
  7. The only hesitation I would have is if it hamstrings us financially in some way to buy out Renteria and pay Maddon (4 years and $15-17 mill, I'd guess?). I know, I know - it shouldn't. But the reality is they aren't spending a ton of money yet. That said, sign me up. I'll be in the market for a hoody and black frames.
  8. Greene is such a disappointment. Athletically he has everything he needs. Apparently its intellect that he is lacking. A 4th round pick out of Rutgers, he's not that much of a disappointment. I mean it in terms of his athletic ability, but yeah, he's still a 4th rounder.
  9. At least Brady won't be running read-option. The Bears have no idea how to defend it. That Tannehill run was the most deflating Bears moment I can recall in years. Its not like he's known for that [expletive].
  10. Difference between this apparently un-winnable road game and the earlier ones in San Fran and Atlanta is that the locker room may be imploding and Trestman is on his way to getting fragged. Pats 31 - Bears 13.

  12. Yep, as long as the offense was good you could ignore his other faults. But when his area of expertise is what's leading to the losses, it is a problem. This
  13. "Losing the locker room" seems like it could be more of an actual thing in the NFL. These guys have to go out and half-kill people for a living on behalf of a team. That requires motivation. I think that Trestman is smart from a technical perspective (I don't doubt that he can dissect a defense or call plays) and probably a nice guy, but I wonder about whether he has the chops to motivate people and hold them acceptable. He might be too cerebral for that. Then again, I thought a lot of the same things about Lovie.
  14. long streak of untimely play? Late for work
  15. They might be ranked in the top 10 but they obviously had a bad game. That doesn't ignore the fact that the line has been improved (espec. Young) and they were coming off a horrible week against GB. They are banged up to be sure. You want to see something really weird? Look at our ratings running left-center-right (bottom of that page).
  16. I was about to come in here and write that we should all hold our breath to see how the kids do against a good O-Line, but then I looked at FO's rankings and Atlanta is surprisingly no. 9, run and pass. Miami is no. 3 in terms of running and no. 10 passing: http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/ol
  17. I seriously don't understand why you think this. Why would this game be so defining over others? You excised the back end of what I wrote where I explained. So, ya' know, no context, no understudying.
  18. This game might tell us more about this team than any other. I hope they aren't the proverbial "plays to the level of the competition" team.
  19. We just traded Leddy and Regin (released) for Carcillo. WTF. Carcillo sucks.
  20. Yeah, he's difficult to like.
  21. Based on reviews I read this morning, Steeg was all over the ice against Montreal last night and looked good. Rozsival on the other hand was awful and folks are calling for him to be packaged with whomever (prob Leddy) as part of the pending get-under-the-cap trade. That seems unlikely to me. I can't see Q going with an entirely new 3rd pairing, using some combo of Cumiskey, Rundblad, and VanR. Plus, Rozi is damn near impossible to trade with that cap number, his age, and his suckiness of late and during the playoffs last season. I think we will be waiving good bye to Leddy or Oduya (likely the former) by Sunday. I'd personally rather move Oduya, but I get why you don't when Leddy is due is large qualifier next season (IIRC, $3.5 million) and they don't yet see him as 2nd pairing guy. I wish Q trusted Leddy enough to give him a shot with Hammer. That is a potentially lethal combo.
  22. I guess I just don't have a lot of faith in our current scheme and coaches outside of using traditional, bulkier DE's such as Houston...though even that ain't looking so good right now.
  23. If this hasn't hit the religious and conservative blogosphere, it soon will.
  24. Nah, this draft is loaded with DL talent. A bunch of them may be tweeners (i.e. DT/DE and DE/OLB hybrids), but still a pretty good class. Agreed, but that's what I mean. We don't do well with tweeners, at least this staff hasn't so far.
