I'll agree that "not being a finalist" does not equate to Hendry not trying. However, it should also be noted that Schmidt signing with the Dodgers does not equate Schmidt having no interest in Chicago. We don't know either way, and probably never will. Where did I argue he had no interest? My argument is only that, based on the contract he is signing, no amount of money could convince him - he likely considered it and decided he'd rather stay closer to home.
I have absolutely no idea how some of you are equating the Cubs "not being a finalist" (a list which has changed almost daily, BTW) with hendry not puting a great offer on the table for Jason. Based on what we have read, Hendry anywhere between 4 yrs and $48-60$ mill. The man simply did not want to come to Chicago. I have no idea what else Hendry could have done here.
I dunno who to believe. Levine says we are hot on the trail of both Lilly and Schmidt. Others say its Lilly and Meche. I read somewhere we wanted Padilla but he never seriously considered leaving TX. Hendry is freakin' everywhere, whereas in the past he was far less so. Its tough to know which rumors have any basis in fact. Just give me this, Jim: Z Schmidt Lilly Jennings Hill Back ups: Prior and Miller
Funny... a few weeks ago, I suggested 3/24 and got laughed at for "overpaying." It is definitely overpaying, whether you suggested it or Boston offered it. ...or perhaps there are some on this message board who don't have a firm grasp on the current market situation? That's not overpaying. What did Pierre get again? Lugo's contract is very reasonable in this market. Maybe in this mkt, but I am not sure I'd want him for that price.
Schmidt, Soriano and Church would keep me from getting too angry. co-sign EDIT: But Mr. Church would not care for me as a Cubs fan b/c I am a Jew and thus destined for damnation. Actually I am Cubs fan and therefore already in pergatory, so Mr. Church has little to worry about.
:?: Anyway, Durham, given his age and position, seems like he is ripe for a breakdown, and Drew, the last couple of years not withstanding, doesn't have an exemplary health record.
Wish we would have signed Drew and traded for Church. Instead of hosing down the fans in the bleachers they could have lectured them about how their binge drinking and illicit, pre-marital sexual activities are sending them straight to Hell!
I think I said this before, but assuming the veracity of Jacque's complaints (and I have no reason to doubt them), I feel bad for the guy and wish some of our idiot fellows out there would learn to behave like decent human beings.
I kind of feel the same, but I know frosty thinks we should have blown this thing up rather than making our move into baseball's true salary stratosphere.
That quote from Lilly's agent makes me think that he is using us to drive up the price. Alternatively he could be signaling to other interested clubs that the auction is coming to an end, so they'd better get their final bids in qucikly.
It continues Link: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/09/20/AR2005092002093.html I knew I read that somewhere. Good find. Maybe he's wised up by now. Ryno Rules, your little joke may have been closer to the truth then we both thought. Ha. Doesn't sound like he's the kind of guy you want in your clubhouse. Then again, it would fantastic if he told Piniella that his Hispanic heritage guarantees him a trip to Hell. It would be Dibble redux.
No kidding. This is where the throwing around of $2-4m deals to mediocre (or worse) replacable players hurts you. If a far superior pitcher costs only $5m more than the other guy, go with the better pitcher. I agree with both of you, but I think the stiking point is years not money. i'd take 3 typical years of schmidt + 1 year were he completely falls apart over 4 typical lilly years. co-sign
Levine was just on and said that Cashman and Williams met to discuss Crede and pitcher(s) for ARod. Greenberg mentioned it earlier; Phillips thinks its unlikely.
I think O'Dowd is full of it. It would be very unlikely that specific names would leak the way they did unless they had actually been discussed. That said, if we are dealing Jacque and Marmol, I'd like to get Jennings plus a prospect.
It's funny that you mention that, I heard or read somewhere (I can remember where) that Church is very religious and use to openly proselytize in the clubhouse. Don't know if it is true. I believe I read that on this bd. As far as I am concerend he can erect a house of worship next to the Cubby Bear and carry out the stages of the cross so long as he puts up a 900 OPS.
