  1. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/chi-081018-manny-ramirez-chicago-cubs-rogers,0,6958510.column Basically what Rogers is suggesting is the Cubs sign Manny and move Soriano leaving them with the same financial situation but, effectively trading Soriano for Manny. Given Manny' enormous baggage and the fact he could go off should someone so much as look at him funny. I still would have a tough time saying no to a Manny for Soriano trade.
  2. In Orton, could we really looking a legitimate NFL QB? Week to week he's improving, never having seen this before from a Bear QB, it's shocking. Going into this season I thought certain that Orton would be bad to average as Bears positioned themselves to draft a QB in '09. By the way, is safe to assume the DL is not going to generate a pass rush this season? If so, how long will it take Lovie and company to come up with and most importantly start using blitz packages?
  3. I can't find a way to characterize our QB pressure last week as anything more than an abject failure. I see what you mean about the coverage too -- just too soft, that slant route open all day long. But there were too many drop-backs that didn't yield any pressure too. The one time we dialed up a blitz on Ryan was the one time he made a really big mistake and threw what should have been a pick 6 to M Brown. But he didn't catch it. It's a choice. You either lay back with inexperienced/subpar/half-injured DBs and hope they can cover and the D line will get pressure, or you gamble on targeted blitzes. And worse -- it's got to be a game-by-game decision. One I'm not really sure this coaching staff can reliably make (certainly not from last week, where I strongly disagree with the soft coverage approach we used all game). I don't believe they can, it applies to offense as well, so far, we've seen McKie get the ball and fail miserably in key short yardage situations. Should the situation arise again I'm not so certain McKie won't get the ball again.
  4. Without question they were scared sh*tless, Aram, Lee(although he had a decent series) and even Soriano all whiffed on crappy pitches they would have smoked in the regular season. The unfortunate aspect is next year' playoff team is going have it worse until they get that first win under their belts, once that happens they'll play much better.
  5. Echoing the thoughts of many here, the D Line must generate a pass rush and if it doesn't start blitzing. It seems that Lovie and his staff have either an unwillingness on inability to adjust their game plan when it isn't working. Last week was a prime example, Ryan sitting back there converting 3rd and longs all day yet, they continue to rush only 4 and get burned - doesn't make sense.
  6. ESPN gotta be hating on this, you know they probably creamed their pants over the thought of Manny facing the Red Sox on baseball' biggest stage. Suck it ESPN.
  7. Just watched the wrap@MLB, I don't what was better - Furcal' 3 boots, Martin' temper tantrum or seeing a-hole Manny' team go down.
  8. But, but, but, Manny made them sooooo great and, and, and they beat a scared and nervous Cubs team, but, but.....LOL
  9. quotes from some of his contemporaries: I also like this stat: Top Win Shares of the 1960's: Hank Aaron - 340 Willie Mays - 337 Frank Robinson - 307 Roberto Clemente - 260 Harmon Killebrew - 257 Ron Santo - 247 Mickey Mantle - 247 Willie McCovey - 237 Brooks Robinson - 233 Carl Yastrzemski - 230 And what do all the above, beyond Ron Santo, have in common? I agree its not about the numbers, its some petty, childish, nonsense amongst the writers and HOF voters.
  10. And, if so, will Lou give him enough time to work it out?
  11. No, 3 teams have never been to World Series outside of Tampa. The Mariners as you mentioned, along with the Washington Senators/Texas Rangers franchise and the Montreal Expos/Washington Nationals franchise Thanks, I had forgotten about the Washington Senators/Texas Rangers franchise and the Montreal Expos/Washington Nationals franchise, so, maybe there is a chance the Cubs will make it to the WS before every expansion franchise.
  12. So, should the Rays win and make the WS that's going to leave the Mariners as the last expansion team to not make the WS since the Cubs last trip in '45, right? Anyone want lay odds that the Mariners will make to the WS before our Cubs?
  13. So the got Phillies to Wade? I wasn't surprised, thought, despite having a good regular season, he didn't have much against the Cubs in the NLDS. He got away with a lot of bad pitches...
  14. Seconded, let him walk, let some other team make an expensive multi-year mistake, go after Burnett.
  15. Letting Dempster walk and signing Burnett is great move hopefully, Hendry' thinking along the same lines. I don't know if Burnett will be cheaper but, I believe he'll perform better than Dempster.
  16. It could also be what it looks like when Lowe has to face a quality lefty bat in a big situation. and when the starting pitcher actually throws the ball over the plate. and when the team isn't scared sh***less
  17. Signing Teixeira , who I'm assuming is a type A FA, means a 1st round draft choice for the Angels correct? If so, trading Lee to the Angels effectively gives him and a 1st round draft choice for Teixeira, not to mention saving them a chunk of change beyond 2010 . If the Angels cannot or chose not to sign Teixeira is such a package worth it?
  18. Say the Cubs sign Tex, move Lee and acquire Roberts, if they go with Pie in CF and Fukedome in RF along with Ramirez, Soto, Theriot and Soriano, that'll give them 4 LHB and 4 RHB. Is that enough balance for you Steve Stone? With such a collection of players, I've got a lineup of: Roberts Theriot Tex Ramirez Soriano Soto Pie Fukedome P Of course, now, problem will be its not L-R down the lineup but, I don't know how to justify moving Pie or Fukedome up the lineup.
  19. It is not immaterial, because Lee can determine whether he accepts a trade. You are correct, forgot about the NTC.
  20. Whether Lee is disgruntled or not is immaterial, if moving him means Mark Teixeira becomes a Cub - so long Derek Lee, thanks for years.
  21. It probably more the Lions ineptness than Orton, but, he did look good and much improved from week 1. Imagine that a Bear quarterback improving with each week, have we ever seen such a thing?
  22. Is Brian Roberts the answer? Is he worth what the Cubs will have to give up? I don't know but, I do know the Cubs need someone who consistently gets on base ahead the 3,4,5 spots in order. I don't know who that is however, I do know who it isn't - Alfonso Soriano.
  23. That BS is getting real tiresome for me, wait till next season' playoffs when we'll read and hear crap about how despite being the best team in the 2008 NL they couldn't manage a playoff win, etc.
  24. In lieu of a Furcal signing I'm wondering if Cedeno should finally be given his chance at SS, I know his baseball IQ is lower Theriot' and he may not hit as well as Theriot. But, he nevertheless, is defensive upgrade over Theriot - go back to Looney hitting that GS in game1. Key hit may have been that infield single by Ramirez, we all knew as soon Theriot fielded it Ramirez was going to beat it out, which he did by less than step. I'm thinking Cedeno throws him out on that play, Looney never hits the GS and who knows.
  25. As many have said the Cubs have a lot good to above average hitters but, not that one hitter that teams plan around. There isn't anyone who the opposing team views as the hitter they won't let them beat them. Is there a Cub hitter you wouldn't pitch to in a game situation? No.
