Last year, they were flat out MISERABLE against the NL East. As far as this series goes, I'm going with unadulterated enthusiasm. Go COBS. We just gotta take it one game at a time, and not look at the big picture. C'mon Cubs just keep winning series until Lee and Prior come back.... I think we still have a shot why not! The central is going to be a dog fight the whole year no one is going to run away and hide. I just hope there isn't a let down for this series. I really don't think the Cards will collapse without Pujols, they can easily move Edmonds to first and put Taguchi or whoever in center. They still have a formiddable pitching staff, something the Cubs didn't have(and still don't), to weather the storm of Pujols being out. And would you like to explain to me how they will replace Pujols's production offensively? They may not replace him offensively, but they have the pitching to holdup and not have a major collapse like the Cubs have while Lee has been out. Which is the basis for which people think the Cards will fall back to the pack. Even without Pujols they most likely will play at or a little above .500 ball. At least that is my opinion. Guys like Rolen, Edmonds can pick up some of the slack.

That does not penalize them. They may have a shorter bench, but they also don't have to burn up the bench using pinch hitters to pinch hit for the pitcher, which in my opinion makes the bench less important than in the NL and actually deeper.

If the DH was instituted in both leagues I would definitely watch a lot less baseball. As to your question as to whether there would be enough guys to DH probably not, but they would be spread out among both leagues you might see some players be able to extend their careers. It would be similar to the fact that there really isn't enough pitching to go around either.

Don't forget the acquisition of Luis Salazar. He came in and hit over .300 and delivered some huge hits. So naturally, the Cubs brought him back where he predictably regressed to his career norms. I don't think there was ever a pitch that Luis didn't want to swing at. But, boy, he sure was versatile! . Ah, Luis Salazar....he loved the head-high pitch! But he'd nail it! Or as Harry used to call him, Siul Razalas. One of my all time Harry backward names. On a side note, Zimmer was not a very good manager, I couldn't believe some of the stuff he did that worked in '89.

Since this season is lost anyway, lets go from absurd to sublime and just hire Darren Daulton to manage the rest of the season, he is looking for a way back into the game.

Not going to tonight's game, but I do plan on spending some time in the Duck Blind this summer. From the few articles written about the team in the local paper, it sounds like they should have a pretty good team this year. I did'nt realize they had a team ERA of like 2.3 last year.

Hendry has made a couple of good trades but for the most his track record is definitely trending the wrong way. He did get ARam and DLee and got rid of Hundley, but you can't just name the few good trades he has made without looking at what has gone on the last couple of years, including trading Willis (which is really more of a hindsight is 20/20), being unable to manage the 40 man roster and losing Sysco. Overall he has not done a very good job. His worst move as GM, signing Dusty to a 4 year deal and bidding against himself to get him. His second worst move is yet to come when he re-signs Dusty to a two year extension.

And the funny thing is, if this did happen, Hendry would not understand the backlash from the fans and the criticism he would receive from guys like Paul "the hack" Sullivan.

The only problem is, they made smart trades and stocked their minor league system. Remember who was the architect of the Cubs system.

They have to do something! I mean they can't keep this up... You could have made the same case practically any day this month. 4 game sweep in San Diego, 3 game sweep at home, then an off day. Following the disgrace that was the White Sox series. We have been making the case, I am just hoping that with each passing day and with the amount of suckitude getting worse that maybe, just maybe Hendry can pull his head out of his rearend long enough to pull the trigger.

Any chance, with an off day tomorrow and after getting swept by the Marlins that Dusty gets canned? He has received a strong vote of confidence lately. TIME FOR A CHANGE, even if it isn't all his fault.

The only reason I like that argument is if it can successfully be used to oust Johnnie B. Baker. This team is not talented enough to turn it around and, I was lucky enough to play golf with a scout for the Cubs the other day and he said for the most part, the players have already given up and could care less.

Who - Ozzie? What strategy are we talking about? Ozzie is no genius...Fans give him far too much credit. When you have that lineup with a healthy pitching staff that gives you 6-7 innings just about every start you are going to win and win often. How many moves does Ozzie actually make during a game? Give the credit to the GM Williams, this is his team, and a fine team at that. 1. Healthy pitching staff - Ozzie pulls his pitchers at 110 pitches - 115 max. Do you think the fact that the Cubs starting pitchers are hurt so often is just bad luck? 2. How many moves does Ozzie make during a game? If he's smart, not very many. Usually the best thing a manager can do is put his best players on the field and get out of the way. Dusty believes calling for a double switch is making a good move. I'm sure there are cases when it is, but often he is replacing a position player with an inferior bench player. I really don't follow the White Sox or Ozzie at all, but to say that he uses some common sense in making some of his decisions makes him a great manager really doesn't hold water. Maybe in comparison to Dusty he is much better, but that is not saying much.

I wouldn't mind Catalanatto for an addition for the bench. He would be great as a left handed option off of the bench. Professional hitter But obviously the Cubs have many greater problems to address at this point.

Not so fast... He threw his side session and said he was fine. According to the Chicago papers, he did not throw a side. Bingo, we have a winner. I can totally see this happening, no work in between starts complained of soreness, this is a recipe for disaster and there will be no one to blame but the incompetence of the coaching staff for allowing him to go out there.

I didn't know there were any more of you optimists around. I hope you're right, but I have trouble believing this team can sweep anybody. I know this board thinks i'm nuts or borderline trollish but I saw something in the Cubs dugout the last game (with the Sox) that tells me this team is ready to start winning.
