  1. See: Hundly, Todd  I don't think it has anything to do with the Hundley deal as that occurred under the old Dodger regime. I think it has to do with Coletti's relationship with the current Cub brass as he used to work for them. I know ... it was joke. Hence the "lol" icon. http://reniewtech.com/images/smileys/unsure.gif I guess I didn't get the joke, sorry.
  2. Open Letter to Cubs Management Dear Mr. MacPhail, Hendry, Baker, et al....: As a life long Cub fan, I applaud your efforts in recent years to bring a winner to the North Side of Chicago. What I find completely offensive and insulting to the loyal fans of this team, who have been suffering for years, is your complete disregard for the task at hand and you inability to accept any measure of accountability for the current state of the team. I find it very disheartening that instead of trying to fix the numerous problems that have manifested over the last few years, you find it necessary to berate a beat writer for doing his job and commenting on the state of the team. Take responsibility for your role in putting together a team that has relied heavily on players who have a history of spending time on the DL every year. Take responsibility for not having put together any kind of a bench when you know that injuries are going to occurr. Take responsibility for consistently, over the last three years, putting a team on the field that has displayed a poor understanding of the fundamentals of the game. I am and always will be a die hard Cub fan, win or lose, but the actions coming from the front office of this ballclub are a disgrace and make me embarrassed to call myself a fan. You guys are getting paid big money to do a job most of can only dream about, at least act like a professional instead of throwing a tantrum because someone is holding your feet to the fire and pointing out obvious flaws with the team. I am no fan of Paul Sullivan, but no one deserves to be treated like that. You sent Mercker packing for doing the exact same thing when he complained about the TV announcers somehow I doubt that you will be held accountable for doing the exact same thing. Shame on you. Disgruntled Cub Fan. edit: not sure if this should have gone in rants, but it has to do with the conversation in this thread.

  4. If somebody has the opinion that Wood is a near lock (I would be shocked if....) to leave this game with discomfort, than other people have every right to reply. Some people are optimists some are pessimists calling them bitter is not going to change that. That is the point I was making.
  5. What did you expect a no-hitter? It's his first game back. Relax. Well, if he was ready to come back I would expect a little more than that, but I was just talking in generalities of how bad this team is. As usual the Messiah has a high pitchcount early in the game and is getting battered around this is Kerry's MO. He will probably settle down but he always seems to have one or two bad innings early in games. Career ERA of 3.67, ERA+ of 116. Obviously he doesn't always have one or two bad innings a game. It's his first game back. Everybody warned that he would not be perfect, he's shown signs of dominance, but can't be expected to be 100% right now. If he shows no signs of improvement in the coming games then you can start complaining, but this isn't that big of a deal. he wont be 100% because he'll be on the DL again in 3 weeks. Seriously, I'll be shocked if he doesn't leave this game complaining of soreness somewhere. Why are you so bitter? Did you expect to see Wood to dominate a game in his first start back. It's going to take a couple of starts. Some of you guys expected way too much today. Why do you care? Let him have his opinion, if you don't like it, ignore it.

What I am most concerned about is Kerry losing confidence with the "new" mechanics and reverting back to what he has done in the past and opening himself up to a greater chance of injuring his shoulder/elbow.

I guess I shouldn't have said "always" but it has been a problem for him in the past where he will have stretches where that happens. Take away some of those innings and his ERA would be closer to 3. Obviously not every pitcher is perfect so those innings will happen and should be expected. It just seems that with the "stuff" Kerry has it happens more often than you would like.
  8. If we can get 6 IP with no more runs scored, I'll take it. I'll take it too, but it is a moot point. This lineup will have a very difficult time scoring runs.

  10. What's Kerry at? about 50 pitches through 2, 5 hits, three homeruns? Go Cobs!!!!!LOL Just comical.
  11. well, for facing 5 hitters, he only threw 14 pitches so they aren't making him work that hard.
  12. Absolutely I agree. But The Cubs needed to win these games or the towel would have hit the canvas. Glad to see the team play baseball. Baby Steps people Baby Steps. They still have people getting doubled off of the bases and I wouldn't say they are playing great baseball. They have gotten some good pitching and won two games in a row, but if guys (Jacque Jones... cough, cough) keep making horrendous base running gaffes, missing cut off men, etc... this little winning streak will be short lived and when they start playing good teams we will see a lot more 5 and 6 game losing streaks.
  13. I believe the Houston pitcher threw at Bonds like 5 times before actually hitting him, so it wasn't like the guy didn't deserve to get thrown out of the game. If anything you can blame West for not issuing warnings after he missed hitting him the first few times.
  14. good question. at least he's doing better than furcal. True, but he's not doing nearly as good as Nomar. only thing is, Nomar is no longer a shortstop. We could sure use him at first right now though.
  15. Speaking of rediculious. Before the season you wanted a quick fall from contention? Wow. Why is it ridiculous? I looked at the team and didn't see a contender, and the org. needs some housecleaning anyway so yeah, let's crash fast, take out the trash, and get ready for next year. Better that than some tragically halfassed darkhorse run this year. It's ridiculous to hope your team fails, especially before the the season even starts. Did you see a contender before the 2003 season? If not you must have wanted a quick fall from contention that year also. You must have been pretty dissapointed come mid October. I am sorry, but I just have to bring this up, it's ridiculous, not "ridiculous". That is all.
  16. I keep checking in to see if there is any news on his status and don't see any good news yet. Just the status quo.
  17. See dusty, you don't need to be their friends, or be liked. You need to be respected and not walked all over. Grow a friggin backbone and quit making excuses for your team. Not sure how this has anything to do with Dusty. Cox was not quoted at all in your post and I fail to see how any manager could back up LaRoche for doing what he did yesterday, including Dusty. I think he was just pointing out the fact that the article said he "drew the ire" of Cox. And LaRoche was at least being accountable for his actions, saying that he didnt' go all out. Second part had nothing to do with Cox, but anyway...
  18. How are the fans acting pathetic? How else, other than booing should they let management know they are not pleased with the product on the field. If the players don't like it, well then play better. They are paid millions of dollars a year, if they can't take the criticism maybe they should find a new job.
  19. The Twins are a horrible example to espouse the virtues of an individual owner. Carl Pohlad is the richest individual owner of a team in MLB and yet consistently spends the least amount of money on payroll, stadium, etc.... The Twins have won because of management and player developement, not ownership spending money. Like I said, comparing the Cubs to other teams is apples to oranges anyway. but you did compare them, you said to look at the Twins, Yankees, Red Sox, Marlins.... If you look deeper, the Yankees success wasn't due to the fact George spent more money, it was that they developed guys like Jeter, Williams, Posada, Rivera, etc...... Sure, George spent money, and that helped but management and player developement were extremely important. The Marlins have tried it both ways, Huizenga spent money like a drunken sailor and then blew everything up and looked to a different model of acquiring and developing young talent. Ownership has very little to do with anything if you have good baseball people running things.

  21. Prior, Wood, Miller will not help what is a woeful offense. Even when Lee comes back the Cubs will still have trouble scoring runs, and their bench is absolutely pathetic. So, unless the pitching staff begins to shut out the other team on a consistent basis I really don't see the return of Wood, Prior, and Miller doing much of anything.
  22. The way this team is currently constituted, they really don't have a chance, they just aren't good and don't have much talent. My loyalty is still with the Cubs, but that doesn't mean I can't be realistic in assessing their chances, which are slim to none and slim just left town. There are just two many holes and no depth with which to fill them. Just because we criticize management, at every level, please do not question our loyalty to the team, it is rather insulting. Also, the Nationals are a better team, whether you want to believe it or not. They have more talent and a much better manager.
