Well, Z doesn't do it often. Demp is great. Lilly, Harden and Marquis not so good. So yeah. Perry should be working on this with them. Pitchers should be the best bunters on the team because they're the ones that have to do it most often.

Harden goes in the night game. But won't be able to make his scheduled start on Sunday now. In the short-term, it's unfortunate. Taking the long view, though, Hendry said shortly after the trade that they'd give Harden an extra day here and there, or even skip a start or two, to keep him healthy the rest of the way. This effectively does that, so even with as well as he's pitched for us to date, I'm more OK with this after thinking about it. Fortunately for the Cubs, they are not in the position where Harden has to be used like CC Sabathia for the team to keep pace. This team is deep enough at SP to not be troubled by long breaks for Harden. So I agree. That's something I find strange about the Brewers use of Sabathia and Sheets, I mean they are securely in the Wild Card spot but are playing with desperation and burning out their pitchers. Or maybe that's a symptom of their bad bullpen? I think it's because they have a big-time "win now" mentality, knowing that neither Sabathia or Sheets will be in that rotation next year and they may struggle.

I would not be opposed to IBB's in key situations, although I've noticed Dusty and Lou have been opposed to that kind of thinking. It's partially why Pudge slaughtered us in the NLCS.

If the batter makes contact with the ball, and the defender catches it, he's out. --The mentality of "He hits well in our park! Let's sign him!". Jeff Blauser, anyone? --Thinking a big contract to an underachieving player who happened to have a career year is a good idea. Sure, sometimes you'll hit, but more often than not, you'll miss.

Glad Harden is going Game 2. That gives us a good chance of sweeping, assuming Marquis doesn't get bombed in Game 1.

Sure, unless you're striking out on a pitch headed for the backstop, not much good comes from a K, since the pitcher isn't depending on anyone else to get you out. But it is still just one out. Yes, but if you put the ball in play, you have a chance of the defense messing up, and therefore something good happening out of it. The chances are slim, yes, but they're a hell of a lot better than if you strike out. so what? The rates that he produces at tells us what he produces, which is good, much better than the vast majority. It does not matter what could happen if he didn't strike out, what matters is what does happen. And what happens when Adam Dunn comes to the plate is a more than acceptable rate of success. The fascination with the strike out is so obnoxious. I'd still rather have a guy who makes the same number of outs, who is able to at least have productive outs.... move the runners over and such. A K isn't the end of the world, and given the choice I'd take a K over a DP, but excessive amounts of strikeouts hurt the team. Yes, he produces well, but he could produce much better if he didn't strike out so damn much. -
Doesn't look promising. :| I could live with a 2 hour delay and then a chance for Harden to go 5 innings uninterupted. Color me pessimistic, but I'm not seeing this game getting in tonight. Looks like at minimum, an inch to inch and a half of rain will fall, albeit light, but steady for at least the next 6 hours. Maybe some bonus baseball tomorrow... Noon start tomorrow, then?

Obviously from a pitching perspective the Cubs would be better off facing LA. But I'd be more worried about Manny than Dunn offensively. Manny is loads better than Dunn, granted. But that's really LA's only HUGE threat to us. Arizona would have 3 pitchers who could shut us (or anyone else) down at any time, plus Cub Killers in Chris Young and Mike Schmidt Jr (Dunn). I don't fear LA's pitching as much as I fear Arizona's. This is bad news for us. -

what a great stat... this pretty much sums up the dusty baker era; the cubs took a pathetic 2.44 walks per game in 2006 are now on pace to increase that by more than 50%. and it's not like it took long to fix either; just get rid of the moron who says "it's called hitting not walking" and bring in a manager who actually understands the value of getting on base. Lou has his flaws, but he's probably the best manager we've had since Durocher.
