  1. There's a reason the word "dreaded" is often used in association with the phrase "vote of confidence."
  2. I was messing around. I was kidding. I know I don't have many fans here, but I hope people would think I wouldn't make things personal over disputes about baseball on the internet. Illini, if I offended you I'm sorry. It was a dumb comment that I thought was funny when I posted it. I thought there would be no question at all that I wasn't guilty of that. The pic in my avatar is of my son when he was a few months old.
  3. Someone who didn't answer like a complete douche. Thank you, OMC. And Cobb even "past his prime" was still pretty damn good. This is something I'm far too lazy to look up, but I wonder about the game in MLB history with the most future HOF'ers in it. I wonder if one of those A's-Yankees games in the late 20's would have been it.
  4. You probably would have been, too.
  5. At this point what can it hurt?
  6. It's going to be a looooooonng season on the North side this year.
  7. Ok, so you come across a magic baseball genie who can grant you the wish of sending you back in time to attend any one game ever played in the history of professional baseball. Which game do you choose? There are some really tough choices, but if I had to narrow it down to one, I'd say October 3, 1951: Bobby Thompson's famed "Shot Heard 'Round the World" against the Dodgers. It was a hell of a game, and probably the most famous single event in the history of American professional sports.
  8. I love Keith Moreland in the booth. When the day comes that Ronny just can't do it anymore and if Pat is still the play by play man, I'd like to see Moreland step in.
  9. That was me. My bad. Speaking of people who have disappeared, whatever happened to mlpeel?
  10. Why would they do that? Lou is gone at the end of this year even if they do fire him, and it's pretty clear they're looking at Sandberg as someone they want managing for at least a few years. Why saddle him and the perception of him as a manager with a bad team? I'd rather Ryno have a less than stellar interim job and ride off into the sunset. I'm not looking forward to the day when the masses, myself included, are screaming "Fire Sandberg!" It's gonna happen. In all honesty, Lou is not to blame in this mess. It's spread quite evenly from Hendry right down the line to the players. It's just depressing to know this team has, maybe, a 1 / 1,000,000 chance of turning this crap around. Do you mean that Lou isn't the only one to blame, or that he is completely blameless? Because if it's the first statement I agree wholeheartedly, but if it's the second I couldn't disagree more.
  11. Sounds like Bullsheet that would be awesome if they're actually chanting that.
  12. Apparently not. 2008 was a fluke anyway.
  13. 4 games under .500, 10th place in the wild card. It's a fairly daunting task. 130 games to go makes it less so. Yes, but expecting this team to play 20 games over .500 the rest of the way to get to 89 wins seems a bit unrealistic considering the extreme difficulty they have getting above .500 currently. edit: I meant over, not under
  14. No kidding. Any talk like he's slacking off or burnt out or whatever is just absurd. He has every motivation to do well this year in what his likely his last opportunity for a really big payday. If he's terrible this year he can always choose not to opt out and try again next year in his contract year. That's why people had better pray he at least puts up respectable numbers the rest of the way if they don't want him on the team next year, because if he's terrible this season he'd be a fool to opt out and leave millions on the table if he has a good contract year next season.
  15. Hooray I have a new bookmark!
  16. Get cracking doing what? Why not just let it play out? Let the contracts that are expiring expire (ideally after you've traded those players and convinced them to waive their NTC and pray to God that Aramis opts out), let Lou walk at the end of the season and let Hendry go with just a year left on his contract. Simply waiting things out could easily be the smartest thing Ricketts could do and definitely an indicator that he's "figured stuff out." Aramis had better start hitting if we want there to be a chance he opts out. Otherwise, he would take a paycut on the open market if he has a horrible year this year.
  17. It's not. Unless the Cardinals seriously stumble or this team as a drastic turnaround they're not going to be in contention to ever overtake them. And forget about the WC. Well, the NL is terrible. Who's the frontrunner for the wild card? The Mets? The Giants? The Giants could be deadly in October. Would you want to face a rotation of Lincecum, Cain, and the resurgent Zito?
  18. Ricketts should fire Hendry first. I fear more and more that the longer the Cubs hang close to .500 or so that he'll make some sort of panic trade to go for it this year and trade some valuable prospects for an overrated one-year rental.
  19. Don't be so sure... if anyone could lose a rained out game it's this group of losers. At least it would mean a DH tomorrow or Wed... I love doubleheaders. I hope we would win both games by a combined 20 runs or so. I will always hate the Marlins for 2003.
  20. Or it could show you that Lou couldn't give a rat's behind. That too
  21. I guess the thing that bothers me the most about the whole 7th inning thing is not that Votto homered, or even that Dempster was left in to pitch to him (although it was pretty dumb), it was that in the post-game press conference, Lou said he went out to the mound and asked Demp if he was ok and wanted to stay in. Demp said yes and Lou went back to the dugout. Of course he's going to say yes! Every damn pitcher in baseball wants to stay in the game! I'd wonder about him if he had told you he wanted to come out! You've been around the game long enough to know this!!
  22. Absolutely. As someone said, watching Dallas hugging/crying with his grandmother after the game (once we found out what happen to the mother) was a great and touching moment. In a humorous side note, I heard that the grandmother was overheard saying 'Stick it, A-Rod'.
  23. Lou is not going to be the difference in making the playoffs or not. He's made some bad decisions, but let's not forget that many of these high profile situations come in close games because of poor pitching or hitting. He bears very little of the responsibility for our start. And ultimately, what is the list of complaints against Lou? Bullpen management, his handling of Soto, the end? The Cubs are mediocre because their offense and pitching have been up and down, not because Lou is going to Grabow too much or hitting Soto 8th. Also his absolutely atrocious in-game management, moving Z to the pen, etc Lou's not nearly the only problem, but he's one of the bigger ones.
  24. Dear Cubs, Please see the best proctologist in the greater Chicagoland area so s/he can remove your heads from your butts.
