  1. Neely Crenshaw wrote: Great research! I think we all know Maddux is not the Maddux of old, but very few pitchers will ever match what he had in his prime. The main point here is that Greg Maddux is still a winner and will earn his money for next year. If the Cubs need more money to spend than they need to build a new stadium, or find new owners.
  2. OK, let me ask you all a question. If a player has an era of say 5 something yet continues to qualify for wins are you going to pull him out of the rotation because he has a bad ERA or WHIP? I know that wins are a team stat, but the pitcher still has to be effective enough to garner consideration for that win. And it is not like Maddux is pitching on a team that is giving him unbelievable run support on a nightly basis. Trust me he is no Kent Bottenfield  (try to explain that one season to me or the Angels) And for anyone who has played sports at a competitive level knows that wins are the only thing that matter in the end. And some athletes seem to have a knack for winning with what is preceived to be subpar athleticism, talent, and "stuff." The point is Maddux is a winner. Before I get ripped to shreds, my point of view is that if a pitcher is winning games despite having an era of 5 you do not pull him out of the rotation. Moreover, if the guy has had 17 straight season of winning 15 games or more coupled with Cy Young awards and HOF credentials, you do not bench him for monetary reasons.
  3. Heck, you can justify it because manager should do what is best for the National League. With that said, if D. Lee is nursing an injury than you sub him out. Other than that D. Lee plays the whole game at first and Albert hits every time in the DH spot. I don't care to see Jason Bay or anyone else on the bench bat at the expense of Albert or D. Lee.
  4. Actually Edmonds is batting in the second hole and has been for about a month. I guess you are right, but I would think that those numbers are greatly inflated by roids. Every stat Bonds, Sosa, and McGwire are questionable in my mind.
  5. HA! That is funny on several levels. First of all, the Cubs offense is carrying the pitching staff now? Secondly, the guy threw a shutout through 8 innings. How did the offense carry him today? The guy is a legend. He and Roger could be the last 300 game pitchers we see in a long time. Enjoy the man's accomplishments while you can. TShuffle, I know you are kidding but you are taking things way out of proportion. I am not saying Greg is as dominant as he has been in the past, or as good as Clemens. Yet the guy has earn the right to continue pitching in the Cubs starting rotation. He is on target to win 15 games again this year. And if the team takes him out of that role because of financial obligation than it would be the worst move that the franchise has ever made.
  6. I'll admit it is not amazing but he has dropped below 5 which was why people were crying earlier. He does have 8 wins which constitutes 19% of the Cubbies wins. As I have said all along, Maddux will get the Cubbies 15 wins and earn his money.
  7. How is Maddux looking about right now? After 7 innings of three hit ball, he has lowered his ERA to 4.75 with 8 wins. Again, he will win his 15 games and earn his contract.
  8. Hasn't the man been through enough? Apparently not, you are going to make him drink bad beer!!!
  9. And he makes plenty of plays. http://www.baseball-reference.com/awards/gold_glove_nl.shtml
  10. You sure that last line wasn't from the Dusty archive.
  11. What would it take to obtain Corey Patterson? I personally think he just needs a change. Please, serious responses. I know most Cub fans are sick of Corey but he does have trade value.
  12. And jealousy rears it's ugly head.
  13. Maddux actually has had 17 straight 15 win seasons. This has never been done before in the history of the game. And will probably never happen again. He has a shot of making it 18 straight this year, and I will be cheering for him unless he is facing the Cards. As for the other three, Prior and Zambrano are clearly better and more consistant than Wood. And only time will tell who is better out of these two. If I had my choice, I would take them both.
  14. Absolutely not! And I would not have signed Maddux to a $9 million dollar contract for the final year either. But the Cubs were in a bidding war for his services and that is what it took to get him in Cubbie Blue. Well, Z has given up 20 ER over 5 games. So what is the difference between him and Maddux? And I have already acknowledge that "there are a lot of variables that go into winning games." Yet, Z plays on the same "mediocre team" as Maddux. And Maddux has almost as many wins in June (4) as Z has had all season (5). There is no way that you can bench Greg Maddux if it is driven by finacial reasons. The Cubs organization would be ripped to shreads by the players union and the league. Plus it would send a terrible message to possible FA's. If Greg is struggling, I think he has earned a chance to prove himself. We are talking about one of the greatest pitchers of all time.
  15. I don't think the Cubs are out of contention. It is a long season and the Cubs have enough talent to make a run at my Redbirds.
  16. I do agree with you on some levels, yet the Cubs are in a better position than most. As long as the Cubs have Prior and Zambrano, they will always be in contention for the Central Division. Plus, the Cubs supposedly have a talent in the minors. I say supposedly because I do not follow the minors that closely.
  17. Maddux is leading your team in wins and will probably win 15 again this season. Zambrano only has 5 wins on the season and has not faired so well of late. Z has given up 20 ER in the last 5 games. I know there are a lot of variables that go into winning games, but to me it all comes down to getting a W. Maddux knows how to win games just look at his track record. Speaking of track record, Wood is always injuried. Maddux is a very durable player and will get his 200 innings. Thus deserving the money.
  18. Sorry I was not as clear as I should have been. I was referring to the last time period where Prior and Wood were on the DL. If Maddux wasn't there your rotation would have been ugly. Z Rusch Mitre Williams ? As for Maddux's contract, I really do not think it is an option to sit him. You have to live with the contract. I don't recall to many fans complaining about it when he signed. In fact, I remember the majority of Cub fans thinking that he would put you over the top. And to be honest, he has done fairly well. He is having a better season than Zambrano and Wood. And from what I have been reading on here, it sounds as if the Cubbies should have plenty of funds left for next year (Sammy's contract is gone). It could have been worse the Cubs could have signed Carlos Beltran.
  19. Sorry for the ramblings, but I am a Greg Maddux fan even though he wears Cubbie Blue.
  20. I cannot believe this is even being debated. First of all, Greg Maddux is a class act and a first ballot Hall of Famer. Secondly, he has a chance to win 15 games this year. That would make 18 straight seasons with 15 wins. Considering that Kerry Wood has never won 15 games and Prior and Zambrano have only done so once, a 15 game winner would be a good season for any Cub pitcher at this point. And with the history of injuries in your rotation, he might be the only consistant pitcher you have. This would be a huge mistake by the Cubs franchise to sit him out of games or did any thing to jeopardize Maddux's chances for another 15 game season. If they were afraid to spend the money than they should not have given the contract to the aging superstar. Just imagine if you did not have him!!!!
  21. . I agree! I remember right after it happened and he was very timid up there. And it did seem like he backed off the plate.
  22. I truely do not understand the whole bru-ha-ha anyways. And I truely do not understand how someone would waste time voting over the 25 votes you are allowed. D. Lee is the better defensive first basemen (at the current time) and he is have the best first half. Albert will be able to DH and the lineup will not be any different. So, all has worked out well. Now if this happens next year than I can understand the issue.
  23. Great Point! The schedule is extremely long and it is bound to happen at least a couple of times a year to a good team (lose to an inferior team) and that is why they play the games. Plus, the bad team still has major league talent on it. In the case of last night, you have to give credit where credit is due, and the young man who pitched last night was impressive. The honest truth is he dominated the Cards lineup and Soup did not pitch well. As for Al's comments, I find it completely unprofessional and arrogant. First of all, nothing can be gained out of bad mouthing the opponent. And I am not saying this is the case, but it can motivate the other team (lockerroom material) or can lead to an underestimation of a teams true talent. Hopefully Al chooses his words a little more wisely in the future.
