  1. Yes it was the 4th inning - that is one reason to swing away - but there were at least two good reasons TO bunt: * MM vs JJ splits against lefties * Z on the hill for the Cubs meant it was probably going to be a low-scoring game. I have no problem with a manager who maximizes the probability of scoring at least one run in that situation (note the Cubs had scored just 2 runs in the previous 22 innings). But if he let JJ swing away I wouldn't have exactly screamed at the TV either. That was really my point: the call could have gone either way. Dusty gets a lot of heat on this board but bunting in that situation is entirely defensible (even in this thread the consensus is split).
  2. Yeah I just don't see how it's a slam dunk decision either way - bunt or swing away. I still think Dusty made the right call. I agree with the modern sabr notion that the sac bunt tends to be overused, but I believe it's a situational thing - not a one size fits all. The "give away an out" argument doesn't hold water when you consider that batting from the left side and with decent speed, against an infield that wasn't playing the bunt (I believe the infield was at double-play depth), I'd say JJ had a 15% chance at a bunt single. His OBP vs lefties this year is .225, so only a marginal amount of offense was sacrificed. Also Murton was up next, OBP vs lefties this year is over 400.
  3. LOL no problem reminds me of cubs.com message board
  4. *groan* yes because we havent heard enough fat ponson and fat glendon jokes this season. i think it's being discussed here: http://www.northsidebaseball.com/Forum/viewtopic.php?t=33503&start=15
  5. I'd also probably bunt with JJ in that situation, mostly because he was facing a lefty. Also Z was dealing - if it were almost anyone else you play for a big inning. All in all it's not a ridiculous move, certainly not compared to other Dusty head-scratchers.
  6. This is what I'd like the see the rotation look like next year too. Give me either Schmidt or Z, but the 2003 version plz. And count me in on the Kerry for Closer BandWGN. It probably won't happen but it's a nice thought.
  7. Didn't see another thread on this - apologies if I missed it: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2006/writers/jon_heyman/07/07/managers.hotseat/index.html
  8. Cap absolutely PWNS the Cubs
  9. In a second. I would love to get Ryan Freel. Completely agree - I'd offer Demp + Ohman for Freel. I'd miss Demp but he's the latest of a long line of Cub closers (wild thing, shooter, jobo, etc.) who had a nice run for a while, then started turning every ninth-inning one-run lead into a tightrope act.
  10. Ryan Freel always reminded me of Lenny Dykstra - I love gritty players like that in front of the mashers in the lineup. If the Reds start shopping him they would want a young arm or two; I'd try to figure out a way to make that work.
  11. I can't name three names. I'd be very happy with Girardi or Razor Shines, but I never heard of Shines before this week. I'd be happy with any manager with a winning track record and an emphasis on OBP as far as the offense is concerned. I'm less concerned about requiring MLB-level experience. Where's my alimony check? (j/k!)
  12. I predict Jimbo will make a trade if the right deal comes along and it improves the ballclub . . . or at least state this vapid intention on every cotton-pickin' interview he gives.
  13. I agree 100% with the above, "stud" is too strong a word. Corey is playing well relative to his career numbers, but even so his offensive numbers, 0.325/.436/0.761, are only so-so among all CFers, and near the bottom just in the AL (though Cub fans would be rejoicing if JP had a 761 OPS). I'm just as ticked off about another ex-Cub CF who IS having a stud year at the plate: Sarge Junior. Corey is having a very fine season defensively though; good for him.

  15. I agree - this is difficult to believe. Plus I'm not even that crazy about the deal to begin with. Remember the McGriff and Nomar acquisitions ... both were trading deadline deals but they both occurred with the Cubs in the driver's seat for a playoff spot, and both players were head and shoulders above the guys they replaced, plugging some serious holes on paper. The Cubs soon tanked after both guys arrived. The Cubs need a stud OF and a stud SP this winter(*). My fear is that Hendry would think "my work is done" if he landed ARod, plus there's that annoying budget thingy. Now of course I'd love to see a package NOT including ARam sent for ARod, assuming playing SS is sort of like riding a bike (an ARam - ARod - TWalk - DLee would one bigtime infield), but that's certainly not going to happen. (*) oh yeah, and a new manager and coaching staff lol
  16. My GAWD. They've got the CPatt bunting now too? Oh my God man this entire coaching staff has got to GO. Now! Wow. Just what we needed, more salt in our wounds. After the CPatt trade went down some friends of mine who are Cardinal fans told me CPatt would flourish away from the Cubs - not probably, but would. They said they never saw a more classic example of a guy who needed a change of scenery. I vehemently disagreed ("he seems to be uncoachable", "no plate discipline whatsoever", "waste of natural talent", etc.) And now I'm sort of eating crow.
  17. Thanks for the tip! I'll definitely tune in, love to hear that anthem ( wouldn't mind seeing that 7-run first again either, especially Z's dinger )
  18. Finally, Z gets a break ... a W after giving up 7 ER instead of the usual L after giving up 1.
  19. No other real options outside of Montanez. How bout JJ after we deal for Abreu  j/k
  20. I didn't like that match-up at all; Konerko feasts on FB pitchers like Novoa.
  21. I half-expected to see Z do a Bo Jackson on that bat after K'ing
  22. I missed it - I'm a big fan of dramatic or unusual interpretations of the anthem; one of my all-time faves was Jose Feliciano before Game 5 of the '68 WS: http://www.josefeliciano.com/anthem.htm Another classic was Wayne Messmer before the NHL All-Star game at the old Chicago Stadium in '91, right after the beginning of the Gulf War. Just an astonishing outpouring of emotion...
  23. Slightly OT, but I didn't want to start a separate thread just for this Lee Elia sound file (it seems oddly appropriate for this thread): http://www.speakeasy.org/~bucky/elia_tirade.html [warning, obscenities galore] I never heard the raw version until I googled for it last week - just an awesome rant for the ages. I'd love to hear Dusty just snap sometime before he's fired and launch into an Elia-esque obscenity-laced tirade. And a Phil Rogers column commemorating the 20-year anniversary of the Elia tirade, near the beginning of the '03 season. http://espn.go.com/mlb/columns/rogers_phil/1546310.html
