  1. I swear if I hear this crap 1 more time, Im going to bang my head repeatedly into a wall. THE CUBS HAVE BEEN WINNING IN SPITE OF THEIR CATCHERS, what part of that is hard to figure out. The Cubs starting pitchers were pitching just fine the entire month of April with Barret catching also, so whats your point Catcher is a defensive position, dude. And so is 1st base 2nd base SS 3rd base CF RF and LF, so what the hell is your point? That phrase is an absolute idiotic phrase, since every position is required to play defense. But in case you didnt know, there is another part of baseball called offense, and I dont care how great you are a calling a game or blocking pitches, its not going to make up for an average under .100 this itself is crap. you know exactly what the phrase means. it means that teams are often willing to sacrifice some offense for defense at that position because of the importance of defense at that position. as for it not making up for an average under .100, I agree for the most part, but chances are Barrett doesn't block all those sliders in the dirt by Wuertz, or Wuertz doesn't have the confidence in Barrett to block them and leaves them up, in which case, today's game doesn't end 7-6.
  2. it was a terrible trade. of course if we use the same criteria to evaluate Mitre as we do Marquis, it doesn't look nearly as bad.
  3. blister on his finger. things are going badly for the brewers. Not a blister. He threw and his finger popped and he is grimacing every time the trainer touches it. how does that happen? throwing a pitch shouldn't cause that type of injury. did he hit it on his leg during a follow through?
  4. Boise now in sole possession of first...with a 10-14 record.
  5. that's a balk. there's no 'inside move' there. he started his wind up, then just stopped.
  6. He owned us one time this year. I looked at the numbers against the guy and overall they are pretty good. the Cubs hit three HRs off of him the one time they faced Maholm this year. Barrett had one of those. while I would have liked better against a guy with a 5.51 ERA coming in, I certainly wouldn't consider Maholm's effort on May 10 an 'owning.'
  7. I thought that they ruled that Logan did offer on that bunt attempt? nope. Kellogg missing it was understandable because Hill got up out of his crouch. there was an appeal to first, and it was denied, which was absurd.
  8. hawk: "baseball is not a game that builds character, it's a game that reveals it." if you are not proof thereof Hawk, I don't know who is.
  9. Interesting take. I don't know if I've ever heard of anyone pointing out how well an ump does in calling balls and strikes. You don't notice them until they screw up. the reason I noticed is I kept getting that sinking feeling in my stomach knowing a pitch was going to be called a strike even though it was not in the zone, then Kellogg not raising his right arm and that feeling going away. on the other side, I kept saying "c'mon blue!" even though I knew Marshall's pitches weren't strikes.
  10. I can't imagine that's the case. If you have a solid medical reason for taking a medication, no organization can ban you from taking them. I'm sure that certain players have received exemptions so long as they're under a doctor's care (as long as the doctor isn't Dr. Nick). well it wouldn't be the organization, it would be the league. there are tons of medical reasons to take steroids. I wouldn't think MLB would allow that just because there is a medical reason for it. I don't see why the Cubs don't come up with an imagined injury for Eyre. every team in the league does it (see Wade Miller). You can't imagine an injury if the player refuses to go along with it. if Eyre refuses to go along with it, he needs to start taking more ADD medication because clearly he forgot about how badly he embarrasses himself everytime he goes out to the mound. that was meant to be humorous, not argumentative.

  12. only tangentially related...are the rumors that Eyre can no longer use his ADD meds true?
  13. I see no reason why people can't post an update on Wood without the thread becoming inundated with the same old tired comments.
  14. I asked this in another thread and noone came up with an answer. shouldn't Bowen have options left? it appears to me that he's only been optioned once in his career.
  15. I just wanted to throw out there that Jeff Kellogg is an outstanding umpire. his zone is not only consistent, but closer to the rules mandated zone than any umpire I have seen all year. I thought Logan offered at the bunt attempt and either Izzy or Pagan got hosed on an outside curveball. other than that, I don't think he missed a pitch all game.
  16. Bud Black with even a bigger head scratcher
  17. Cox with a head scratcher. let's Kyle Davies hit with the bases juiced, then replaces him three batters into the next inning.
  18. mods, I caught this on while scrolling down. don't know what he is rambling about, but I think the meaning of his statements are evident when reading the two exchanges.
  19. so let's review what happened in that span. the fallout from Barrett and Z and the subsequent trade that created a second offensive blackhole in the lineup the fallout from Lou's tantrum and the outrageous 4 game suspension the short end of the stick in a beanball war/dirty play war that basically cost the Cubs a fighting chance in two different ballgames. yet another set of long extra inning games where the offense couldn't scratch together a run. the short end of the stick in another beanball war. an estranged team hero ironically hitting a milestone HR off a pitcher wearing his old uniform number. a disheartening defensive lapse killing a chance at a great comeback. a bullpen meltdown for the ages. 4 fricken pitches? c'mon. a notorious Cub hating umpire 'coincidentally' showing up behind home plate in the biggest series of the year. the team you're chasing crushing your starting pitcher in the first inning two games in a row. a controversially nixed trade for a player and the fallout thereof. a 15 day DL stint for the best (or at a minimum, one of the best ) hitter(s). about 10 days without the closer. a chronically taxed bullpen due to several of the above. say all you want about the level of talent and the way the team is put together, but this is one of the most resilient teams I've ever seen.
  20. the Cards are such a wishy washy organization. why don't they make up their mind and go forward with the plan. all they are doing is killing Reyes' value.
  21. at least the Brewers won't have another lefty to pound on when they come to DC.
  22. Probably not. yet, in another thread What if he suffers a career ending injury? Until he gets there it will always be an if. somehow, you treated the former as an 'if' but you don't seem to be treating the latter as an 'if.' you said you don't needlessly argue minutiae with me, so there must be some explanation, right? sorry, trick question. you do in fact like to needlessly argue minutiae with me, and that is the explanation for your contradictory opinions on the two situations.
  23. eh, i dont give him too many props because he wasnt doin hardly any celebrating on Monday night when the cubs had that walkoff....he just kinda stood there and was walkin out to the crowd with soriano... I think you said this in the game thread and I looked for what you were talking about and didn't see it. he greeted Koyie Hill with high fives and hugs, they both start heading out to the mob, then you never see him or Hill again in all the footage from any angle shown on the post game highlights. furthermore, that was before the almost trade to Florida. maybe I'm just high on Jacque because he hit me a walk off dinger against Matt Wise last night on PlayStation (a nice little foreshadowing to todays game). Carlos Zambrano with a CG, only two runs he allowed were on past balls by Michael Barrett.
  24. I've watched the 9th inning 4 times already today. Only 4? Pshaw. I've got ya beat by about 10. my girlfriends son rewound and played the HR about 20 times right after it happened. unfortunately one time he rewound into the bottom of the ninth and pressed ok when the DVR said "this will stop the recording." so now I have the whole game up until Howry having two outs.
