  1. whether it's facing tons of sinkerballers, which has actually seemed the case, the Cubs hit TONS of groundballs when they were supposed to be amongst the league leaders in HRs. some things I like, but this is something that needs to be addressed.
  2. lol @ pro-rated $28M/year.
  3. like I just explained, congrats to them for winning their games, but lesser teams could have done similarly against the pitching they've faced.
  4. As soon as the cubs do... The Rockies are a hell of a lot more formidable than the Astros. And the Tigers and Twins are a lot more formidable than the White Sox. I don't see what there is to complain about. How bout dem Royals? The Royals are arguably better than the White Sox right now. Twins (home and road), Tigers (road), Royals > Mariners (home), Sox. when you miss Santana and Silva in both series, the Twins aren't formidable in any way shape or form. you should also be grateful about two one run wins in Detroit. Guillen out of that lineup is a big cog missing, especially when replaced with Neifi. Royals better than M's? did you seriously just say that? since they last faced the Cubs, the Brewers have faced Verlander. other than that, I think the only starters they've faced that are even league average are Durbin and Bannister. You've done well in games you should have won, and had alot of games you should have won simply because of the luck of the draw, which like it or not will always play a large part in baseball, or at least until starting pitching becomes irrelevant. be happy about that, and move on.
  5. 3 in two days. Theriot was never sent down. or was that what you were referring to and they didn't break Jones?
  6. shouldn't the thread title reflect what we know, not the opinion of the person who changed the thread title? Just call it "deal to the Marlins off." no Zell, no Hendry. if people want to read and form their own opinion, fantastic, but we have no idea what transpired.
  7. Why in the world would the commissioner's office care what the Cubs are spending? Is this a serious question? The commish works for the owners. The owners, as a group, want to profit. Individually, the owners don't want anybody else spending money, because that drives up costs, and cuts into profit. Realistically, that's not going to happen. So, instead, they prefer to see teams spend logically, and not throw out crazy contracts that drives up the costs for everybody. In other words, they don't want to see guys handing out 3 year contracts with no-trade clauses to middle relievers, or 8 year 136 million deals for guys that aren't top of the line superstars. Owners got pissed at Hicks for the original ARod deal. Owners get pissed at Steinbrenner when he brings his payroll from $95m to $200m in just a couple of years. Owners get pissed when desperate GMs give insanely large contracts to mediocre pitchers, because that drives up costs for the rest of the pitchers. Selig doesn't want to see teams throw money around willy-nilly like Hendry did this offseason. It drives up the costs for everybody else and makes his life difficult, by having to deal with other owners bitching and moaning. I think it was a serious question, but you chose to remove the context and answer the question you wanted to answer. off season spending is one thing (although George was never publicly chastised by Bud for the spike in payroll you describe), so your points regarding that are well taken. but I think the question posed is directly related to the issue at hand. why Bud would be concerned, if he was concerned, about this particular deal is a head scratcher as the rule regarding sign off on transactions involving exchange of $1M or more is so low payroll teams can't sell players for large amounts of cash the way the KC A's used to sell all their good players to the Yankees. that is not the scenerio here. Jones contract is signed. why Bud would give a damn that the Cubs are paying him to play for the Marlins is beyond me. he had no problem with Colorado and Florida paying Hampton to pitch for the Braves, nor does he have a problem with the Rangers paying Arod to play for the Yankees.
  8. last 10 games with Iassonga behind the plate - Rockies 8-2 Cubs 3-7 last start for the Cubs with Iassonga was the Aram collision with Quade game. Z didn't pitch very well, but was squeezed on outside pitches to righties, while Bergmann had many outside and low pitches called strikes.
  9. Iowa game log is awesome. some of my favorites... whaaaaa we loves our double switches in this organization Scott Moore goes 0-1 tonight with 2 RBI - sac fly and this looks like that visit worked, but.... not as well as that one. geez, let the guy rack up some ABs nice work Les, but ummmmm, point? so did Moore assist in getting the error, because no outs were recorded on the play damnit, we owe that Young guy some chin music
  10. that's the most gawd aweful rag of a newspaper in all of Chicagoland. I thought it was the worst anywhere, until I spent sometime in my girlfriends hometown and read the paper there (no offense photoguy if you work for Dan Quayle's rag).
  11. Brilliant knee-jerk reaction. He's been great the last 3 years. He was dominant in his last 12 outings and all of June: 14 IP, 8 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 14 K, .71 WHIP, .64 ERA. He had one bad night pitching on his 3rd consecutive day. He also didn't have very much time between being told to get up and start warming to when he was brought in the game. I seem to remember Sammy having a few multi-HR games against the Rockies (hit 3 at least twice against them, I believe), and I think the last time the Cubs scored a run in every inning was in Coors Field as well. Didnt the Rockies score 1 run in every inning in wrigley once also. one afternoon in 1999 I was super po'd at my at-the-time girlfriend, went for a long walk, ended up in the neighborhood, and wasted $10 to go watch that crapfest from the upperdeck. although that girl made me so miserable, it was actually a nice break and quite refreshing.
  12. Baylor blew, but he was the most competent handler of a bullpen of any Cubs manager in a long time. not that that is saying much.
  13. this isn't mortal combat...it's the cubs bullpen. i'm not entirely sure they kno what that saying means thanks killjoy mcsmartarse.... i love saying that Motion To Make Carniby Change His Username to Killjoy McSmartarse 2nded How many times is Carniby going to have to change his name? Everyday? the one yesterday was better. something or another McSkullet. HANDLEBAR MCSKULLETT THERE IS ONLY ONE..... http://media3.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/photo/2007/06/24/PH2007062401017.jpg classic. I chuckle everytime I read it.
  14. Zell put a prohibition on righties facing righties and lefties facing lefties after the 6th inning. nothing? I get nothing out of this? I thought it was pretty good.

  16. Yankees and Cubs seem to be playing Bizarro baseball. the Cubs stink, the Yankees get hot, the Cubs get hot, the Yankees stink.
  17. Whattaya talking about?? Cubs are 2-0 this season when taking an 8-3 lead in late June. I don't like Drs. and Chicagoland cardiologists are getting wealthy over this crap.

  19. I'm really starting to question the advisability of taking an 8-3 lead.
  20. Must be a conspiracy. you must be a brownie hound. punk.
  21. we haven't gotten a corner all night. batting or pitching.
