  1. I love my baby daughter, I love cheeseburgers. clearly I am not talking about the same emotion. similarly, I hate the guy who murdered my aunt, and I hate the Cardinals. again, not talking about the same emotion. our language can be fairly imprecise, so sometimes you go with the word that's convenient. I personally don't think that we sound like Sox fans when saying "I hate the Cardinals" because Sox fans typically aren't passionate enough about baseball to say that all too often. when I start saying "Sox suck" when clearly they do not, then come talk to me about sounding like a Sox fan.
  2. And if you remember the article describing his off-season workout regimen, you know he wants to be really good. and that work out regimen seems to have paid dividends already. as I mentioned in the game thread, the stop he made on the held-on-to-the-ball-too-long slider from Wuertz after Marshall was pulled and the bases loaded was simply spectacular
  3. Not entirely true. Pierre clearly distracts pitchers when he is on base. The less focussed a pitcher is on the hitter, the better the hitter's chances of getting a pitch he can hit, including homeruns. Those stolen bases may have affected the pitcher, the pitches that are thrown (don't want to throw a slider in the dirt with Pierre on third), etc... Can you prove this? Look at each time Pierre has been on base and see what the results are. It shouldn't be that hard since he's only been on base 8 times this year. probably not the best example since he's scored 6 runs in those 8 times on base. thus lending credibility that something about Pierre being on base makes the batters better / pitcher worse. interestingly, Pierre has not scored a single run after any of the 23 times he did not reach base. (sorry, I just was reading the game thread) Jacque Jones has scored 3 of the 4 times he's been on base, is his speed that much a nuisance? The pitcher may just not be very good(as evidenced by giving up hits to Pierre and his compatriots), or he's less effective from the stretch(true of many pitchers). I'd give both of those more credence than Pierre's speed distracting the pitcher to the point of being noticeably worse. EDIT: But all of this is getting away from the original point that I was making, that Pierre hasn't been good thus far. easy there. I was just pointing out a that there is an anomoly in the evidence you used, and that evidence lead to a flawed argument. as for the part I bolded, simply by saying this, it leads me to believe you are trying to say something more than your original point described in your edit. there's some ax grinding going on here.

  5. it's been a long time since he's played there, but with Blanco as Z's personal catcher, and Ram on the shelf for the day, it sure would be nice to keep Barrett's stick in the lineup by giving him the start at third. edit - didn't see RyCubs post.
  6. I know what your saying, but I think you take the importance of homerun scoring too far. the Cubs were the highest percentage of runs scored via HR the past two years, and they were at what, 42%? I agree, there will be some useless stolen bases, but even the Cubs score a majority of their runs in other ways. I think the useless stolen bases and some of the OBP advantage is offset by the number of times a Rickey Henderson type player will be at second via steal and score on a single when a Mo Vaughn type player will be at second base after that single, and end up stranded at the end of the inning. sure, there's useless steals, but there's alot of useless avoidance of outs when a guy like Mo Vaughn is running the bases.
  7. Doesn't that depend on where in the order you want the player to bat? They both bat third. Let's say both players have 5 season in the majors. Player A has Mo Vaughn speed and is a station to station base runner. Player B has Juan Pierre speed. Player A's average and OBP dip considerably with runners on because he presses every AB with a man on trying to get the big hit and he strikes out a lot. Player B has his best numbers across the board with runners on. They play in similar parks with similar lineups. CLUTCH ARGUMENT ALERT!! CLUTCH ARGUMENT ALERT!! RUN AWAY, RUN AWAY!!! edit - srbin, this is not insulting you. this is insulting us all for getting into the same discussion over and over and over.
  8. Player A - RBI and Runs are a team driven stat. What player would you rather pick up in the offseason? I have to agree with you. I would rather have Player A. 90 RBI's for the Yankees is a lot different than 90 RBI's with the Royals. if we did the analysis that we did with Pierre over the winter, subtract CS from OBP and add SB to SLG, the difference in OPS is about 15 points. if both players play the same position, which would not be the reaction positions of C, 1B or 3B (because none of them ever steal that many bases), you also have to consider the probable huge difference in range on defense because of player B's speed. if the player can consistently walk and steal at the rates implied, this is alot closer decision than it appears at first glance.
  9. the most important stat in the assessment of Juan Pierre thus far PA 31
  10. I used to manage a small hotel, and this is exactly what you should do. all those online reservation systems are only alotted a certain percentage of rooms, maybe 25-30% of capacity. if you get through, ask for the rate, then tell them "I saw it advertised online for less, would you like to make a deal?" chances are they will give it to you for slightly less than you say you saw online.
  11. Dear Eric Milton, commence with the pants crappin'. If Neifi gets the start, it will be Dusty's worst move of the year by far. in fact, if Neifi gets the start, Dusty should be shot. he and Blanco are the only guys on the team that don't pound Milton.
  12. LA? what's that? oh, you must mean Anaheim of LA. errrrr LA of Anaheim

Meh, I read that Thomas was ready to come back during the season but his coach didn't want him to burn a year of eligibility while playing half a year. just jumping in here. I know nothing of this player, and little about assembling a basketball team, but it seems to me that if a coach thinks his player is good enough to go play in the NBA right now, he would get as much PT out of him as possible since he'll lose him to the NBA before his eligibility is up anyway. so either that coach thinks that player is not good enough to go to the NBA, which doesn't say much about his talent, or the player did not return this year for some other reason.
  14. so was there ever a report of how this contract broke down? from what I read, it seems like the contract is scrap the current contract, 13M/year for 5 years, full no trade, and that's it. no incentives, no options, nothing complicated. really makes you wonder why it took so long.
  15. there really should be a rule against that. it's like the movie Major League come to life. a farce, made even more farcical by the fact that two players account for more than 2/3 of that.
  16. It of course has nothing to do with Prior and Wood battling injuries. nor did Blanco's CERA have anything to do with being Zambrano's personal catcher. I've heard alot of this "everyone prefers pitching to Blanco" stuff, but I don't think I have ever heard it from anyone from the Cubs organization. plus, even if the pitchers do prefer pitching to Blanco, that doesn't mean that they would prefer Blanco starting when they are pitching, as Blanco can't hit.
  17. Z vs Milton That game should be a bajillion to 2 victory for the Cubs. Milton sucks. I dont know how to judge tomorrow... But remember the 9-inning No hitter against Phillies in 2004? I remember, and if I remember correctly, the Cubs came back and won that game.
  18. because it isn't an even year? more seriously, the Cubs are already a right handed dominated linup, and Reggie is about 110 years old and still hasn't made it through a full season without an injury.
  19. 3rd, not home. Gamecast says that he got caught stealing twice, one at third and once at home. with two outs, Barrett was caught in a rundown b/w 1st and 2nd, so Lee broke for the plate, and was thrown out.
  20. yes, which is approximately how many baserunning errors the Cubs have made. essentially, the Cubs gave all those free outs right back with bad baserunning.
  21. Brian Mcann How do you figure? I don't really. Maybe in a year or two if Salty doesn't take his job. how many runs did Paul knock in today? Yep but Michael can't catch anyday. Will he always knock in 3? I'm not watching, so I don't know what your gripe is, but will there be a short hop play at the plate every day? Barrett is a good hitter, but how many games has he just killed us? Like with the play at Philadelphia when he threw to third when he could have reached out to tag Rollins. I would trade Barrett for a number of catchers straight up. Name some. Victor Martinez Joe Mauer Jason Varitek Ramon Hernandez Javy Lopez Javy Lopez? That's reaching. He's not really a catcher anymore. nor was he ever good on defense, nor is he a better hitter than Barrett right now.
  22. that play in Philly hurt, but it was more of a lucky play by Rollins then a bad play by Barrett. Rollins gambled that he could deke Barrett into throwing the ball down to third. Barrett did exactly what he should have on that play, but Rollins' gamble paid off. so there's one game that Barrett's defense might have cost us. I tend to think other people were to blame for the bases being loaded at the time, but I guess that's just me. the third game of the Cards series, Barrett's block of a ball in the dirt and way wide helped keep the Cubs in the game before he won it with his bat. so there, he's even on winning and losing games with his defense.
  23. if you managed the Reds, wouldn't you just sit Hatteberg, put Dunn at first, and let Freel play left everyday and bat at the top of the order? it makes no sense to me why that guy doesn't play everyday.
