    Abreu's poor season was only in the second half, where it was documented he had marital troubles. If he performed to the level he has previously in the first half I wouldn't worry about taking him on. I didn't know that, but I went at looked at his splits. I guess the wife's attorney was being a nice guy in August, then got mean again in September.

    Pablo Ozuna/Timo Perez/Willie Harris Pokey Reese/Ricky Gutierrez/Cesar Crespo Lenny Harris/Mike Mordecai/Andy Fox Jose Nieves/Alferdo Almezaga/Benji Gil everyone but Gonzalez/Grace/Sanders/Schilling/Johnson. get the point? Neifi has a place on a WS contending team, so long as it is the right place.

    would anyone trade top of the line talent to land Geoff Jenkins? how about Cliff Floyd? both were about as productive as Abreu last year. Abreu is a fine player. would love to have him. however, I don't think it is wise to chase a 32 year old outfielder whose OPS+ plummeted 26 points last year and has a big fat wad of cash coming to him next year. at the very least, its not wise to get hyped about him until you see if he'll rebound. if a deadline deal is made, there are much better options out there, especially because Philly would ask too much (ie. you could probably land Cabrera for slightly more than Philly will ask for Abreu)

    I think ESPN is just importing a lesson from Fox. the interviewer wants to pose a question, or more accurately create a story where there is none, but will look like a scumbag if he does, so instead of posing the question himself, he attributes it to unnamed sources experts official sources pundits critics etc etc etc in other words, no real people to which the question can actually be attributed to.

    I hate Dusty, but think the criticism goes a little far. I think it is noteworthy that Bobby Cox brought in Remlinger to face Burrell, Utley and Ryan Howard yesterday. the not hard to predict results Burrell - deep flyout Utley - beanball Howard - hard hit single to right. then Cox removed Rem when righty David Bell came up. Dusty isn't the only one that has trouble reading split stats.

    I don't think he walked anybody in the fifth. he gave up a double on a good cutter to Taguchi (still don't know how he kept it fair), and a soft liner to center, got an out on the bunt, the beaned Eckstein. which sometimes is understandable when one pitcher is a lefty and pitches downhill and the other is a righty three quarters guy...but then both teams went to the pen and the crap kept up, no matter what arm or arm angle was used. but I don't think you can call the home plate umpiring inconsistent. the calls consistently benefited the Cards and screwed the Cubs. I love that the Cubs overcame it.

    Actually I think complaining about a fishing analogy is nitpicking at it's finest but this is probably a close second. huh? See "Dusty Being Dusty" thread I see. I know I tick alot of people off, but that seemed waaaaaaaay out of the blue. I hate fishing, so I thought maybe I insulted fishing in rants or something.

    sorry if discussed elsewhere.... absolutely absurd that the Nats were the only team disciplined. I like Pedro, and like that he pitches inside, but the guy beans guys intentionally more than anyone in baseball, and gets away with it time after time. if anything, only the Mets should have been punished. I thought it was stupid that the Nats pitcher was thrown out of the game and the guy that beaned Nick Johnson wasn't. then the suspensions came down. what a joke.

    I hate no trade clauses, but I suppose in effect the no trade clause is really only until July 2008. He'd have 10-5 rights in 2009 and 2010 anyway. I think even if Derrek regresses from last year, he's the type of hitter who could readjust, get back to taking walks and going to right, and maintain the numbers he put up in 02-03 for several years to come. even with those types of numbers, combined with his defense, 14M in 2010 isn't a bad contract. barring injury, this isn't the type of contract that will completely hamper the Cubs at the end the way Sosa's did. I will be interested to see how it is structured.

    I don't ever remember not hating the Cardinals. looking back, I remember going to a Cubs-Cards game when I was seven, and I know I absolutely hated the team in the other dugout. my mom brought me to six games that year. I don't remember having that same feeling about the Bucs or Phils, but I knew I hated the Cardinals.

    You mean when he pulled a no-no and slid into first, like hairston did all last season... The bat flip was annoying too. It wasn't that far out. If it had stayed in the park and he only got a single out of that b/c he was pimping it, I'd boo him. For what it's worth he does that fairly regularly, or at least he did with the Twins. also FWIW, all it was was a bat flip. after he turned, he busted down the line until he saw it was out. I think the booing was way out of line. Jock hit the ball hard twice in the first game, twice in the third game and had nothing to show for it (I didn't see the second game). he had another line shot caught by Edmonds last night. usually four line drives and a few grounders results in a couple of hits. even in the fourth game, with all the Ks, he used up a ton of pitches, helping Carpenter to his early exit. but even if the booing was out of line, the Cubs fans redeemed themselves by cheering him on when the count was full, then wanting a curtain call. you compare that with Neifi, three hits in his spot start, none of which were hit hard enough to rightfully have gone for hits.

    Although we have to assume Carp goes longer if it wasn't his second start of the season, 1 degree out, and he had back issues prior to the start. they still had him at 97 pitches through 6 innings. regardless of weather or time of year, he didn't have more than an inning left in him. last year Carpenter was throwing complete games with as many pitches.

    that block of the ball in the dirt was huge, and about as difficult of a block as I have ever seen. I forget whether it was when Encarnacion or Pujols was up, but the bases were juiced at the time. that block, combined with Cedeno stopping Rolen's roller from reaching the outfield really helped keep the Cubs in the game.

    rebuilding a big lead after losing it in the openner, playing through some defensive lapses, and two come from behind wins, especially last night when the homeplate ump was hosing the Cubs on all four corners of the plate. I think wins like those really help build confidence in a team. they get an attitude about them. related to P/PA, I like the way that the two good starts against the Cubs by Aroyo and Carpenter, neither pitcher was able to pitch into the late innings because the Cubs used up so many pitches, even though they weren't getting on base.

    he absolutely did hold up, as did Lee yesterday when the ump also failed to check with the other ump. Lee also held the bag on both plays he was ruled to come off yesterday. as usual, just terrible umpiring for nearly the entire series, and nearly all of it in favor of the Cards. just huge that they were able to overcome it.
