  1. little bit o batting practice for both teams.
  2. Yamamoto vs Poteet Game one. Big MO does look like he slimmed down. Yamamoto is nasty right off the bat.
  3. Agree.
  4. It's not an either/or situation. The owner calculates how much profit they want to take. They are all profitable. But it's a club more than a sport. The club makes the rules and pressures its members to follow them. In the case of the Ricketts, Wrigley is used to finance a lucrative empire with Wrigley Field as its centerpiece. The real product is Wrigley, and it's about as bankable as any product in sports. The Ricketts 'break even" comment rubbish, is an aspirational assertion that they see in the future.
  5. Cubs are on MLB.tv today at 2 pm Central. I can't help but be fired up.
  6. I'm following this thread from afar. I'm not the biggest hockey fan. Why is it taking so long for the Hawks to even become respectable on the way to being good? Like shouldn't they marginally improve year over year?
  7. Holliday at 9. I thought he was supposed to be better than his brother
  8. That's a generous interpretation, but it certainly is plausible. Perhaps the most credible is that Ricketts gave Jed parameters that he believed would likely not work for Bregman. Given Jed's recent comments of 1) going out of his way to damn with faint praise the Ricketts family for allowing him to pursue Bregman and 2) his measured choice of words explaining to the media- I think you/Bertz may be on to something about Jed's leash and also his frustration.
  9. They wanted Bergman for two years. They were willing to bet they could offload him if they needed to as they did Bellinger. That's my take.
  10. In other words, is he on the Cubs team this year?
  11. And then what happened?
  12. Lol, were you asleep for the Bellinger era?
  13. Let's be honest: The Bergman deal was a two-year deal with the Cubs, and if he performs to standard, it will be a one-year deal with the Red Sox.
  14. It could save them millions if the rules get fundamentally changed. That's the upside.
  15. It will only harden their natural proclivities. Ever since they established ownership they’ve been outspoken about “the right way” to build a team. And behind the scenes they and few others were the push behind the luxury tax stuff. That’s why he’s so adamant about it. The scheme is his baby. They’re a rich kids who grown up to be a rich adults and never had to work a real day their lives. They have a sense of entitlement to do whatever they please. They want praise for turning Wrigleyville into Ricketts World.
  16. The Athletic gave the Cardinals an F grade for the offseason.
  17. One also has to look at how much better they were than their peers. I posted it in the Gretzky thread. Jim Brown was so much better than anyone who played contemporary to him that he cannot be touched. Same with Jordan, Gretzky, and Ruth. I don't know about QBs, Marino was great but he played in an era of great QBs. I don't think Brady or Mahomes are special from the standpoint of the position, but they won a lot of big games. When I think of a QB, I think big arm and an accurate passer- Like Jim Kelly or Elway. Peyton Manning was probably the smartest QB, Montana the best under pressure. But the best all time, I don't think there is one single QB that would fit that category.
  18. I'll root for him b/c he's on the Cubs. But he's kind of an horsefeathers. Probably not that much different than most of them though.
  19. I don't think Devers is disgruntled. I've also heard that Boston is planning on using Bregman at 2nd. So I don't know, regardless, they aren't going to go after Devers now. Maybe if he's available for inflated prices at the ASB and Shaw isn't cutting it. But Devers is kind of a butcher in the field, anyway.
  20. The six million dollar man. We can rebuild him, make him stronger, faster...
  21. He's not playing 3rd
  22. Given the team structure, the bench is a little less relevant. The bench is in Iowa for any player who will go on the IL for a longer term.
  23. I've never heard of Eli Smith, was he good?
  24. The Ricketts have another building to renovate or a balloon payment due on one of the properties they already own.
  25. A far simpler explanation is the looming CBA. I don't think the Ricketts intend to sell the Cubs. They are using the Cubs to finance their extracurricular real estate speculation around Wrigley.
