  1. Anyone could have made those trades. Baltimore failed to come to terms on a long term contract for Lee after he was traded by the Marlins. I supposed Hendry gets credit for the first person to say, "I'll take him". Aramis was traded after questions about his "make up" and ability to play defense. Two things that still haunt him today. Hendry should get credit for the Nomar deal, but again Boston couldn't get rid of him fast enough. But all that is beside the point, Hendry has demonstrated repeatedly that he's real good at putting together mediocre to terrible teams, year in and year out. Frankly, I want more. Funny how those deals became hindsight "no brainers" that anyone could have made, but the board nearly melted down when they were made going on and on about how badly we were fleeced. Because we gave up Bobby Hill and Hee Seop Choi who were "just as good, but cheaper". Who gives a crap about what "the board" thinks? I wasn't here when Lee was traded. I think the Aramis trade was not universally panned. But it is all completely beside the point.

Aramis Ramirez was one of the best defensive 3B in MLB last season. We think that, and it probably is true, but ask Barry Rozner and the average fan about that.

  4. Good to have the voice of sanity check in every once and a while. :D I agree, however at the same time I think it shows how piss poor of a GM Hendry is.
  5. I agree. If not better, just as good. But I think the same thing about Murton too.
  6. Jim is playing chess while they're playing checkers. Step 1: Increase Fuld's trade value by making him "untouchable". Step 2: Step 3: Reap the rewards.
  7. But only the Golden Dome gets ****** star players.
  8. This entire off-season has been about that, so far. It makes absolutely no friggen' sense what-so-ever.
  9. Teahan has a higher ceiling. That and two-fiddy gets you a Java Chip Frappuccino at Starbucks.
  10. 3/4 of Old Prior > 2/3 of all pitchers in the bigs, and he's relatively cheap. $3MM for no production is not cheap. The Cubs are no desperate for starting pitching this year, there is no need to potentially throw $3MM down the drain on wishful thinking. Wow, just... wow.
  11. 3/4 of Old Prior > 2/3 of all pitchers in the bigs, and he's relatively cheap.
  12. I figured Ohman would be traded after his demotion and comments. By why Infante both for a RP I've never heard of?
  13. what's the point in getting him unless we move Pie for starting pitching/SS help? He'll probably hit lefties better than Pie but he certainly won't hit righties as well. McLouth for a crappy reliever is a really good value move. If the organization is high on Colvin, dealing Pie and using McLouth as a bridge to him makes a lot of sense. I'd rather the Cubs not count on Colvin for anything at this point in his professional career, but I get what you are saying.
  14. um..no its not, and that is the dumbest analogy I have read on this board to date. cancer isn't a performance under stress. I hope this helps: Not that I necessarily agree with this but here it goes, Clutch is simply performing at "typical" levels in "pressure situations". The player doesn't get better, he simply performs at or near expected levels Anti-clutch is the player performing at significantly worse levels in "pressure situations". I don't know how they would measure drop-off and how to control for opportunities, but I think that is the logic. It makes sense at some level.
  15. They were a scary team this year. They're like my MLB 05 team on the PS2, it's crazy. Seriously, if they get Johan and they stay healthy they could win well over 100 games.
  16. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Dusty Baker appears to be settling in with his new position. No kidding. Any half-assed GM could put together a team of cast-offs from the teams in this divison to beat any team in this division.
  17. It is what makes college football pointless. Pointless but rich.
  18. And this is why we should know who is cheating and who isn't. If I were a GM I'd hire Jim Rockford for 200 bucks a day plus expenses and get the dirt on who's cheatingand who ain't. The public doesn't need to know. I think the GMs already have a good idea who was juicing. Either way it doesn't matter, use the data to tell you. Those data are too old to tell anyone much of anything about Roberts. Look at his last 3 years for trends.
  19. Be careful what you are praying for. If a Selig stamp-of-approval owner gets in there is no telling what will happen, especially if the Cubs manage to win the division again with a low 80s win total. Hendry might get an extension. It really is disheartening.
  20. I'm going to predict an OSU win over LSU. I'm also going to predict that shortly afterwards we'll see a long overly complicated rationalization using mathematical models of why LSU was the better team and "should have" won by Meph.
  21. If he'd been coaching Michigan and saying that they'd all be cheering in Motown. After Bill Frieder left the basketball team to coach Arizona Bo had a hastily called press conference announcing that "a Michigan Man" will be coaching the basketball team in the NCAA playoffs. He said it with spittle flying from his mouth and hand pounding on a desk. They all applauded.
  22. If Gallagher can learn to control the strike zone a little better he should be a pretty decent pitcher down the road. My question: Who has more trade value?
  23. Ugh, good lord that is irritating. It is astounding to me that after so many comments from him last year about the team's inability to hit left handers, he is so focused on getting a lefty for right field. WTF?? I don't mean to take this thread on a tangent, but I have to mention this here. A few months ago, someone on this board posted a link to Steven Levitt's blog - the post where he endorsed one of his grad students for a position with any MLB team (after they worked on the "does lineup protection exist" study). I went to grad school with that particular student, and I asked him if he considered a position with the Cubs. His response was that the Cubs front office was one of the few MLB front offices with no interest in hiring someone with his background. Very telling, and extraordinarily infuriating. I had this conversation with him over the summer, but didn't bother to post about it until I read that mind-numbing quote by Hendry. WTF?!?! It just gets better every day. The only good thing is that Hendry is in a division largely populated with GMs just like him.
  24. http://www.gatewayclassiccars.com/images/carthumbs/STL/3082/3082.jpg Very nicely done! ________________________________________________ Sandberg>Mazeroski>Morgan Anyone remember the Bert Weinman Ford commercials on Sunday mornings on WGN back in the day? "I'm Len Burton for Bert Weinman Ford, and look at this beautiful 1975 coupe de'ville. AC/AM/FM radio, 8 track tape player, power steering and power brakes. What a beauty"
