  1. My wife and I had some business in Jackson so we stopped by the game. Atkins pitched very well after the first inning. Colvin hits the ball hard whenever he makes contact. Matt Craig has a good eye at the plate. Nate Spears does not stand out in anyway. I got a sunburn because I refused to put on sunscrean.
  2. You know how much they love their multi-sport athletes. Second only to that is a player who could be either a fielder or a pitcher. Kelly has both of the qualities.
  3. Makes no sense. There are more right handed batters than left handed batters. But there are less left-handed pitchers. http://mfrost.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/2007/05/29/the_more_you_know2.jpg
  4. I'd wait a little before writing off the Brewers, Yost or no Yost.
  5. Obviously something is wrong. Making him apologize won't help anything. Sending him home would be a mistake as well. You're in a tough situation. I would talk to the kid's parents to see if he really wants to play. If he does, bat him first in the next game.
  6. Estes is going to have a tough time reaching the 20-year category the original poster talked about. Yea, I agree. It's the best I could come up with.
  7. This guy.
  8. The thing to keep in mind is that when you implement this it's not like each starter could go 100 pitches if they wanted, they'll be throwing fewer pitches less often, like a more important long reliever. In any case, the situation will dictate when the change is made, how well he is pitching, how close he is to tiring, at what point he comes up, and how many runs the offense is scored all play a part in making that decision. I like the idea in principle. I think it might work well to team a young guy with a guy like Maddux or Glavin or Al Leiter who is pitching toward the end of their career. Leiter was very effective for about 4 inning toward the end of his career.
  9. We got to the game in the top of the 2nd inning. They didn't have a radar gun but Sam. had a pretty good but also pretty straight fastball. In hitter's counts they were sitting on and hitting the fastball well, but at people. Fuld made a real nice catch in CF and Camps made a great play at SS. However, his breaking ball (splitter?) was outstanding. He struck out all 5 batters on breaking pitches in the dirt. He seemed to tire in the 5th but powered his way through it. I don't know how much talent was on display for the D-Jaxxs but Sam. pretty much dominated them last night. I was impressed if that means anything (and I know it does not).
  10. And something from a local paper: http://www.palmbeachpost.com/sports/content/sports/epaper/2008/04/03/a1c_fau_0403.html?cxntlid=inform_sr It sounds like he'd be a great dead ball era player.
  11. I like how you put up Big Z's hitting numbers. Hell, put him at DH in the interleague games.
  12. CUBS are actually 3 games below .500 on the road (10-13), but your point is well taken, just the same. Right. The Cubs have done exactly what a good team is supposed to do, beat up on the bad teams. For the first time in my life I have faith in this team. They are going to keep winning.
  13. 210-147 career record 154 saves 127 ERA+ (that puts him in the top 50 all-time) 1.17 WHIP 7.98 K/9 (23rd all time) 3011 career strikeouts (16th all time) One Cy Young award If you think his numbers are borderline HoF, ok. However, when you factor in his postseason numbers, (15-4, four saves, 2.65 ERA in 207 IP), I think he definitely gets in. The thing that will help Smoltz is the 200 wins and 150 saves, only Eckersley has similar numbers (20 win season and a 50 save season) and he's in the HOF.
  14. Those stupid Cubs. They're so dumb, putting together the best team in baseball and winning all the time. Hendry and Lou should be fired. Demoting Pie and signing and playing Edmonds has nothing to do with the Cubs winning. But, if it makes you happy...
  15. Edmonds is done. Done Done Done On top of that, Pie may lose another 1/2 season of "seasoning". However, the Cubs may just be good enough to overcome the ridiculous decisions they some times make.
  16. I think the wife and I will travel to Jackson to see Jeff pitch. Hopefully the team will look better than they did when I saw them in Montgomery. I'll give my very ammeter scouting report.
  17. There was an excellent fluff piece in the Sunday NY Times about Pedro Alverez. The kid sure does seem to have a good head on his shoulders.
  18. Dunedin...high-A affiliate for the Blue Jays. Isn't this his 3rd FSL All-Star Game appearance? If so, that is a pretty dubious honor.
  19. It's a standard deviation artifact.
  20. I think it's absolutely a sure thing he gets in. What isn't a sure thing is whether it's on the first ballot. No way. He doesn't have the numbers and baseball writers have an extremely long memory. See Santo, Ron. W L ERA 200+ IP 216 146 3.46 9 The only thing he's done that is HOF worthy is keep the walks and HRs (for the most par) down. I'd love to hear Bruce Miles opinion on this. sportswriters love postseason success. they think that's very important. 21. I'd be all over that like white on rice. It probably won't happen though. I think the Cubs are happy with Soriano. Omar will fire Willie before he will trade Beltran.
  22. The Count is way better looking than Harang. Way better.
