  1. I can understand how MLB wouldn't want Zell running the Tribune while owning an interest in the White Sox, but right now Zell doesn't own even a single share of the Tribune or the Cubs. He holds an option (warrants) to buy 40 percent of the Tribune. Zell controls both the Tribune and the Cubs. The rest is just legal technicalities. That said, Zell and MLB will do as they please just like they've always done. Should Cuban lose he may have a case for a law suit but he could probably never win it.
  2. The NYT had a story about the Blackhawks in the Sunday edition. I suspect the AP story will flow from that.
  3. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=5641 3.41 ERA/1.28WHIP/29 Saves last year. In the pen, perhaps. At the end of the pen, no thanks. 8 losses (9 blown saves) from the guy at the end of the pen is not what I want to see. The most telling stat to me: 4.88 BB/9 last season. The dude reminds me of Farnsworth. yeah, its marmol-esque Not exactly. http://www.fangraphs.com/comparison.aspx?playerid=2790&playerid2=1793&playerid3=&position=P&page=3&type=full (You can pick any of those)
  4. I'm thinking that Cuban is out with all the news that the ratbastard Zell is going to sell the Cubs in smaller chunks to avoid taxes and restructure the deal so as to make it more affordable. Ricketts probably can no longer afford the price.
  5. Peterson is some kind of smart. I wonder why he doesn't have a full time gig? Anyway, my wife and I were driving back from Nashville this morning and he was on XM with Holden Cawfield. He has a company that does biomechanical analysis of pitchers. Apparently he did it with the Mets but he made it sound like both the pitchers and the Mets didn't like him doing it. He was discussing this in the context of the $300,000,000 wasted on pitchers who were on the DL in 2007. He was also talking about TJS and said it is becoming an epidemic even on the amateur level.
  6. Which is why I'm thinking that the Cubs never really had a realistic shot and Towers was just using us as leverage. In reality, the Padres would be stupid to trade Peavy to us. He's a top 5 pitcher and we don't have a legit centerpiece for a guy like that. If Peavy wants to win he should nix the trade and wait until after the ASB. The Braves aren't winning with him and they will be in real bad shape without their SS. I'm kind of thinking that the Braves will get both Greene and Peavy.

  8. On Homeplate on XM they made it sound like it was the Braves or nothing.
  9. What does the Padres equivalent to BigBird (FatherRyan?) have to say about it. I've intentionally not been reading this thread b/c I don't want to get my hopes up. Hendry has all the luck (I hope).
  10. Are you putting Pedro Martinez in his era or just behind it?
  11. hahahahaha!
  12. i hope that obama asks to take his oath with his right hand on the koran rather than the bible, just to watch the right wing collectively go insane. I hope its on a Hustler with nude pix of Palin form one of her many colleges. You know there are some out there somewhere.
  13. having taught some of these students, I can say they definitely have a grand sense of "grade entitlement". They expect A's, and if they don't get one, they expect you (the prof) to provide them an avenue to change the grade to an A. If you don't give them that avenue (re-doing the work, extra credit, etc.) they throw a colossal fit. There is nothing in your statement that separates NW students from University of Memphis students. I can pretty much guarantee you that the two groups aren't in the same tax bracket most of the time.
  14. That's why I said if the Cubs are stuck with Fukudome they may have to do it. However, a Fukudome/Johnson platoon isn't cheap. A Pie/Johnson platoon would be cheap though. I also know that the Cubs got pretty good production out of Edmonds/Johnson last year and know full well that I may be way off base here. If I had more time and interest I'd look at other platoons and see what kind of production/cost ratio they generate.
  15. Why don't you want Johnson back? He'll be 32 and because he's roughly 1/3 of a useful player. Pie plays better defense so if you want a defensive replacement use Pie. A team like the Cubs should only platoon if they have to. They should not plan on a platoon before the season starts. It's is a waste of both roster space and money. I don't understand many people on NSBB who talk about platoons like they are a good thing. But that's just me. I have no problem if they are signing him up for a 4th OF position. But if we know Fukudome can't hit lefties (which he couldn't last year) then it makes sense to bring in Reed as a platoon guy. You don't want to build for platoons, but if you currently have a player who needs to be in one, then it makes sense to have one. I know. It's just one of my many irrational beliefs. I know it's not right, but if Fuku cannot hit lefties he shouldn't be starting, especially in the NL Central.

  17. Isn't there some stories about Fukudome not wanting to play CF and choosing the Cubs b/c they had him slated in RF? I don't want Johnson back and I'm not sure Fuku can handle CF but I guess they are stuck together (Fukudome and the Cubs) so they might as well make the best out of a bad situation.
  18. General Manager, but we whiffed on that one. Nearly as predictable as wrigley23. But much more correct.
  19. It's funny that two organizations have now mishandled Prior. Makes you wonder if he's part of the problem. I don't want a guy who squats to pee anyway. If you know what I'm talking about and I'm sure you do.
  20. There isn't enough talent in any of those rosters either badumbum I'm here all week folks. Don't for get to tip you waitress.
  21. Does he think hes writing an article for a video game audience? Seriously, that might be the most [expletive] trade proposal that has been published...thats quite an accomplishment. It's worse than some of the most ridiculous trade proposals that posters on ESPN.com and Cubs.com would propose. But what do we know, we've never been in a big league locker room while everyone played grabass and poker.
  22. Good for Listach. I know this is anecdotal and that a lot of the players moved up and/or down, but I could see a noticeable difference in the Smokies from the previous years to last year in terms of being ready to play.
  23. Very masturbatory.
