  1. Yeah, I really doubt he's outright making this up. I'm guessing he's talking to a friend who's a low-level nobody with the Padres who talked to another low-level nobody who heard something from a mid-level nobody. Each of these nobodies liking to feel important and a part of a baseball organization liberally spreads any hint they've picked up from somebody who actually means something in the organization. Pretty soon, a vague idea of what the Padres want in return from the Cubs becomes a concrete idea of what the Cubs will receive from the Padres. Nailed it. (hopefully the peons hit the jackpot)
  2. Except it doesn't mention anything about Greene. I'd piss my pants and dance a jig if it happens though.
  3. I have no idea the source. http://www.desipio.com/?p=1782 He's this year's BigBird, Belkfast, or whatever.
  4. This is fun too. It'll probably turn out to be just as disappointing in the end.
  5. This doesn't really have anything to do with MLB. Zell has to unload the team as quick as he can, and nobody will ever get financing for the whole team by the time he needs it. I have yet to see anywhere that Cuban can't complete the original bid that he put forth. If you can find a bank that will lend someone a billion dollars for a sports team right now (and payments deferred for a number of years), please call Cuban and Zell because I'm sure they'd both like to get this done. I wasn't under the impression that he needed to finance as big of a chunk of it as the others.Zell is requiring financing for anyone who wants to buy in order to avoid capital gains tax. Remember, the Tribune bought the Cubs for 20 million and are about to sell it for around a billion MLB and Zell should be tried for tax evasion.
  6. Either Burnett or Lowe. I'd go real hard after Lowe regardless of what happens. I'm a big Lowe fan. So would I, but I think Lowe is likely to head to either New York or prolly Boston if the Red Sox wants him. Lowe will not be going back to Boston. It didn't work out too well for him the first time around. ? The entire time he was in Boston the writers and fans questioned his "mental toughness". He was sent to the bullpen for a time and was pretty pissed about. The fact that he won a WS ring doesn't change any of that.

  8. Could Beane use Holliday in another trade to get something(s) he actually wants?

  10. Not much new to report. The guy did say that the Braves were getting antsy b/c they want to move ahead in their plans. If they get impatient for this to happen they're stupid. already posted, only about 10 posts ago. I really am losing confidence that Peavy ends up here... Sorry, I have so many people on ignore reading a thread like this is like looking at a piece of swiss cheese.
  11. This is from the Atlanta Journal Constitution's David O'Brien Not much new to report. The guy did say that the Braves were getting antsy b/c they want to move ahead in their plans. If they get impatient for this to happen they're stupid.
  12. He might have pushed for Victor Zambrano but only and idiot would have traded Kazmir for him. Getting Zambrano wasn't the worst part of the trade.
  13. I can understand how MLB wouldn't want Zell running the Tribune while owning an interest in the White Sox, but right now Zell doesn't own even a single share of the Tribune or the Cubs. He holds an option (warrants) to buy 40 percent of the Tribune. Zell controls both the Tribune and the Cubs. The rest is just legal technicalities. That said, Zell and MLB will do as they please just like they've always done. Should Cuban lose he may have a case for a law suit but he could probably never win it.
  14. The NYT had a story about the Blackhawks in the Sunday edition. I suspect the AP story will flow from that.
  15. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=5641 3.41 ERA/1.28WHIP/29 Saves last year. In the pen, perhaps. At the end of the pen, no thanks. 8 losses (9 blown saves) from the guy at the end of the pen is not what I want to see. The most telling stat to me: 4.88 BB/9 last season. The dude reminds me of Farnsworth. yeah, its marmol-esque Not exactly. http://www.fangraphs.com/comparison.aspx?playerid=2790&playerid2=1793&playerid3=&position=P&page=3&type=full (You can pick any of those)
  16. I'm thinking that Cuban is out with all the news that the ratbastard Zell is going to sell the Cubs in smaller chunks to avoid taxes and restructure the deal so as to make it more affordable. Ricketts probably can no longer afford the price.
  17. Peterson is some kind of smart. I wonder why he doesn't have a full time gig? Anyway, my wife and I were driving back from Nashville this morning and he was on XM with Holden Cawfield. He has a company that does biomechanical analysis of pitchers. Apparently he did it with the Mets but he made it sound like both the pitchers and the Mets didn't like him doing it. He was discussing this in the context of the $300,000,000 wasted on pitchers who were on the DL in 2007. He was also talking about TJS and said it is becoming an epidemic even on the amateur level.
  18. Which is why I'm thinking that the Cubs never really had a realistic shot and Towers was just using us as leverage. In reality, the Padres would be stupid to trade Peavy to us. He's a top 5 pitcher and we don't have a legit centerpiece for a guy like that. If Peavy wants to win he should nix the trade and wait until after the ASB. The Braves aren't winning with him and they will be in real bad shape without their SS. I'm kind of thinking that the Braves will get both Greene and Peavy.

  20. On Homeplate on XM they made it sound like it was the Braves or nothing.
  21. What does the Padres equivalent to BigBird (FatherRyan?) have to say about it. I've intentionally not been reading this thread b/c I don't want to get my hopes up. Hendry has all the luck (I hope).
  22. Are you putting Pedro Martinez in his era or just behind it?
