  1. The Cubs are stuck in the middle on the wrong side of competitiveness. The FA market this year is not good. Their minor league system is full of "nice" players, but no real stars (give or take PCA and Horton). They've sunk a lot of money and time into complementary players. They are Jim Hendry and Ed Lynch's dream team. If everything breaks right, they will be competitive within the division. That's how they were built for this year and how they will be for years to come. It's how they draft and how they approach free agency. No significant risks and no potential for great rewards/failure, just garden variety mediocrity.
  2. For anyone that voted: Did you have any of the recently drafted players other than Shaw in your top 20?
  3. When does the seat get warm for Jed? This off-season? End of next season? I always assume Jed and Ross are a package deal.
  4. Nico is in his head. Late swing decisions. Happ’s got a different problem. He’s getting beat by fastballs.
  5. Such a frustrating team and coach. Sunday Cobs. Reminds me of the Dusty Sunday forfeit lineups.
  6. Ok. Six runs are better. Bellinger racking up the prospect point.
  7. Bases loaded no outs. I’m predicting two runs this inning
  8. Ok, I’ve been I. The woods all day. I’m very high. I just got home. Don’t know anything about the game. I’m going to live text it as if it’s live.
  9. I voted. The top of my list was pitching heavy after PCA.
  10. I'm not trying to be a dick here, but his biggest weakness is that he cannot throw strikes. It also happens to be a glaring weakness of the pitching development team for the Cubs.
  11. I didn't want to start a new thread. So let's assume everyone the Cubs drafted signs with them. Projecting out, who was the Cubs' best (not safest) selection? My vote is for Carico.
  12. I've seen the Ugla comparisons and I think it has to do more with body shape than game. I think he's closer to Altuve than he is to Ugla if things break right for him.
  13. I was really good at watching the minor league games and checking the box scores for about the first month and half, then life got in the way a lot. I'm interested in hearing what you people think of the state of the farm system at this point. We can talk about specific prospects or in general. My impression is that in general starting pitching is way up and hitting is way down with a few exceptions. PCA is obviously the stand-out guy, still. Hayden McGeary, BJ Murry, and who else have boosted their stock? Owen Caissie has shown power, but he still strikes out a lot. Injuries have hurt too, I'm thinking of Canario, Howard, and Davis. Pitching- Horton has blown me away. Brown has been really good. Ferris is shown great stuff but he's a long way away. Killian, I don't know what to make of. I still don't see a lot of stars in the minors. Where does Shaw fit in with this group? Anyway, I'm anxious to read what other people think.
  14. They may not win the NL Central and they have six teams in front of them for the WC, but the next two weeks should be fun unless they completely horsefeathers the bed coming out of the ASB.
  15. Derwood is in the misery loves company camp. NU is going to get served with multiple lawsuits and perhaps a class action suit in the very near future so the players will get some form of justice. The university is tarnished already and stuff trickling out can only make it worse. If the NCAA wants to do anything, it should provide assistance to the university on how to get themselves out of the mess they created. This should include a slew of firings up to and maybe including the university President. That should work better than limiting scholarships.
  16. They don't get to play the Brewers or the Reds 12 more times each.
  17. I don't think the Cubs can muster a 43-30 finish even with a favorable schedule. The balanced schedule will do them no favors chipping away at the deficits. They are a workman-like team and will finish with a workman-like respectable record close to .500.
