I don't see how you can rag on Mabry getting his first start in left...against a righty who Mabry has seen, if you want to put Mabry in the lineup, this is as good a game as any to give him a start.
Rusch is going to become this year's Sean Estes. He's going to make 4 absolutely horrible starts, but then, when his job is on the line like it apparently was today, he'll come up with something borderline acceptable and get a win, keeping his job.
I signed it. How is Buck not in the hall? The Hall is about greatness, and Buck O'Neil is one of the greatest men to ever be involved with pro baseball.
I'd be interested to see if Hairston's OBP last season was inflated by his HBPs. He'd definitely be a better option than Neifi. AB R H 2B 3B HR TB RBI BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS
Hairston 380 51 98 24 2 4 138 30 31 46 0.258 0.332 0.363 0.695 If you subtract out Hairston's 11 HBP's, that OBP drops to .314. what if he's just good at getting hbp? a walk is a walk. should people count that against guys like Bonds or Biggio too? I second that. On Base Percentage is not a statistic looking forward, it's a statistic that looks at what you've done. It doesn't matter if getting hit by a pitch is a skill. All that matters is that you were hit by the pitch and that you got on base. Getting rid of HBP from on base percentage would be like taking triples out of batting average because triples are fluky, lucky hits that don't happen often.
What did Korheiser and Wilbon think? I'd be curious to know. Personally, I think Sosa's career may look much different in 5 years, as the corked bat fades but revelations about possible steroid use come forth. Only then will a good judgement be possible.
No. Just no. http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/PHA/1920.shtml 48-106 Maybe they meant the 1910 Athletics. The 1910 Athletics are already on the list...They probably meant 1929. http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/PHA/1929.shtml
Watching him pitch, it's not completely him not throwing strikes. It's umpires not knowing how to judge a ball that moves that much. When it hits the front of the plate at the guy's belt and is at his ankles as it crosses the back of it it's tough to call. Once umps get a feel for his pitches (gets Maddux-like calls) he'll be set. Yes, but how many pitchers get Madux-like calls? Maddux and Glavine...and not that many others. Most have to overcome inconsistent umps.
Neifi? Neifi had 157 hits plus 18 walks plus was hit by pitches 3 times, for 178 total times on base. However, he hit 9 home runs, so he was only standing on base 169 times. So, yes.
Did you watch the Orange Bowl? Penn St. took 3 overtimes to beat a team ranked 22nd. Ohio State convincingly beat a top 10 team. I have Ohio State ahead of Penn State, even after Penn State beat them. I mean, Penn State nearly lost to Northwestern.
How about the fact that In 1982, Ricky Henderson stole 130 bases but was also caught stealing 42 times. That's a cool 172 attempted steals. Think of all the players that aren't even on base 172 times in a season.
I believe it was stated before, and I would agree: Miguel Cabrera Albert Pujols edit: Maybe Arod if the Yankees ate a lot of the money and you could move him back to short. Young position players? I would add... Jason Bay Michael Young Grady Sizemore Victor Martinez Travis Hafner Mark Teixeira David Wright Chase Utley Not all those guys make sense for the Cubs tho... Jason Bay- Maybe Michael Young - I like him Grady Sizemore - No Victor Martinez - Maybe Travis Hafner - Doesn't fit with Lee Mark Teixeira - see above David Wright - Doesn't fit with Aramis Chase Utley - No Now, are any of them worth Prior or Z? Only Bay, and only maybe.
