  1. the "forward progress stopped" call was particularly egregious in the first quarter... especially since one ref signaled that it was packers ball.
  2. refs took the cowboys to cover apparently
  3. farve throws a pick and gumbel shows absolutely no emotion in calling the play... this is a sporting event bryant, not c-span
  4. on the good side, you aren't subjected to the terrible play-by-play of bryant gumbel
  5. good to see the cowboys brought their top referee crew to the game
  6. First ballot? Really? He was solid for a long time and still put up great numbers into his 40's (steroids, anyone) but imo first ballot is really stretching it. Raines has more career value than McGwire, according to WARP3... and not by a slim margin. Rock is a first ballot HoF, even if nobody noticed it. yes but raines also played a lot more - and about 10365 PAs for Raines versus rougly 7940 for McGwire. Mark McGwire was a better player overall, per game, though Raines was more durable. Regardless, they both belong in the Hall.
  7. holy cross moves to 6-0 after a 60-39 barnburner against yale
  8. haha espn's score coming back from commercial spelled virginia tech wrong... they had Virgina instead
  9. the befuddling lack of consistency continues for the flyers. Road win against Carolina, OT loss at home to Washington on Friday, road win against Ottawa Saturday, home loss to Boston, and another road win against Carolina. So we beat good teams on the road and lose to bad teams at home... wtf?
  10. lol, $1.5M for dave wannstedt... that's about $1.49M too much
  11. after beating harvard, holy cross takes on another safety school tonight as they face yale
  12. my criteria for being in a state means setting foot in that state, but not just in an airport terminal. For example, I've "been" in West Virginia because one time on my drive back to State College from Washington, D.C., I drove across the border of WV and Maryland, pulled over to the side of the road, got out and stood there for a few seconds, then got back in the car and drove back into Maryland.
  13. Penn State is favored?!?!? Talk about easy money.
  14. 3 years $12M for Bob Howry was never a bad deal... people are falling all over themselves praising the Wood deal, but it's pretty unlikely that he'll be able to put up numbers like Howry had the last two seasons. The Eyre deal, on the other hand, was always stupid.
  15. hey maybe this year one of the top 10 shortstops in major league history will get 20% of the vote and the more i looked into it, the more i was sold on raines. of course he won't get in because: a) didn't get 3000 hits b) played on bad (and obscure) teams c) didn't hit many home runs d) voters will ignore his great plate discipline e) single-season high of 71 rbi, he couldn't have been that good
  16. by the way, lou whitaker should be in too.
  17. my thought process: Bert Blyleven - 146.3 WARP3. Not really dominant, and played on a lot of bad teams, but deserves credit for his longevity and durability. I voted yes. Dave Concepcion - great fielder, but couldn't hit, and unlike Ozzie Smith he didn't get on base much. Fairly underrated by the SABR community - he's better than some of the HoF SS - but he still shouldn't be in Andre Dawson - As much as I loved the Hawk, his career OBP of .323 is pretty terrible. Objectively, a 105.3 WARP3 in 2627 games doesn't come close to being enough for the Hall. Goose Gossage - I really have no idea. I couldn't differentiate much between him and Lee Smith, and chose to leave them both out, but I can see arguments for having them both in. Don Mattingly - excellent numbers early in his career, but injuries made him mediocre later. 84.7 WARP3 in 1750 games. Unfortunately he wasn't healthy enough to put up Hall-worthy numbers. Mark McGwire - voted yes... roids aside, he was a great player and his numbers are easily Hall-worthy. Dale Murphy - no. would've been nice to see what he could've done if his knees weren't so bad, though. Tim Raines - 123.9 WARP3 in 2500 games. I voted no - my standards are pretty high for corner outfielders - but I'm rethinking that. Actually after looking into it more, he's better than most of the LF in the Hall. He should be in. Jim Rice - overrated because he played during a fairly offensive era and played in a hitters' park. 83.2 WARP3 in about 2000 games - nothing special. Alan Trammell - as stated above, this should be a no-brainer.
  18. Games Played/WARP3: Luis Aparicio 2599/97.6 Luke Appling 2422/132.2 Dave Bancroft 1913/94.1 Ernie Banks 2528/123.4 Joe Cronin 2124/116.6 Travis Jackson 1656/80.2 Hughie Jennings 1285/85.4 Rabbit Maranville 2670/103.0 Pee Wee Reese 2166/108.6 Phil Rizzuto 1661/82.0 Joe Sewell 1903/105.1 Ozzie Smith 2573/139.1 Joe Tinker 1804/87.4 Bobby Wallace 2383/130.5 Robin Yount 2856/137.0 Alan Trammell 2293/129.4 I was too lazy to do the math, but you can see from the figures that Trammell has a higher WARP3, and a higher WARP3/G, than most of the shortstops in the HoF. Trammell's omission is almost as bad as Santo, in my opinion. And it's not like Trammell is even getting a lot of support - he's averaged about 15% during the last five years. Just goes to show that by and large, the Hall of Fame voters are a bunch of morons.
  19. nobody cares, but tonight's holy cross game (home versus ohio) is a pretty good game between small conference teams
  20. here's the non-conf schedule of hawai'i next year: good to see that the bcs conferences will oblige them next year... would've been fun to see hawai'i face those teams this year with colt brennan.
  21. I'm shocked by how things have started out for you guys. I thought PSU had an outside shot at a tourney berth before the season started. Can you at least win your Big 10/ACC Challenge game? well, penn state just got done losing to south carolina, rider and ucf, teams that were ranked (roughly) 110, 194 and 119 last year, so you can probably answer that question yourself
  22. as much as i like kerry wood - and i do - i'm filing this one under "overpaying for bullpen help"
  23. i'd really like to see hawai'i do well in a bowl game... can't say i'm too thrilled about the prospect of them playing a road game against lsu
  24. yeah, a day after getting outplayed by the crapitols. the best part of last night's game was that we outshot ottawa by a pretty good margin... probably the best game the flyers have played all year. they've got the potential to be great, but there needs to be more consistency (cue joe morgan). i'm also not totally sold on john stevens as a head coach.
  25. doesn't really matter if mizzou or wvu is #1 this week... if mizzou beats ou it's mizzou-wvu (the mountaineers will not lose to dave wannstedt); if mizzou loses then it's wvu-osu (barf)
