    the cedar river in waterlooo, ia crested at 25.4 feet yesterday; the previous record crest was 21.9 feet, and records go back (from what i can tell) about 100 years. that's crazy. it's an ugly situation in the upper midwest and they're going to get a whole lot of rain tonight into tomorrow.

    meh whatever... lou does a pretty good job of controlling pitch counts, and all pitchers want to get the CG if it's within reach. 119 is not a huge number of pitches. color me stunned by dempster's performance so far.

    i kinda just want the cards to collect 25 people outside busch stadium and put cardinal jerseys on them for a week, just to see if they can keep winning.

    maybe 100%, judging by tonight. ludwick is as good as if not better than pujols, and rick ankiel is the next great CF. and let's not forget braden looper's dominant right arm.

    Before or after Ascanio? normally i would've said after ascanio, but ascanio's been pitching poorly since going back to iowa, while wells has been very good lately. in any case, we have 13 pitchers right now, which is dumb, and someone (hart) should be heading back to iowa pretty soon.

    that is probably the biggest reason that i hate kobe bryant. he commits a really obvious foul and then acts stunned that they called him for it. i wish they would give him a technical just for being such an idiot.

    Pretty funny/odd/stupid that the called him for it at that specific time. I mean, for the refs let him do it all game long and then finally call him for an illegal screen in the last 30 seconds is pretty stupid. maybe the refs had the lakers to cover

    as well they should. he's a good fastball hitter and a good inner-half hitter with strong pull tendencies. teams would be foolish not to throw him more breaking balls and more outside-corner pitches. the home run tonight - on a 3-2 slider that was going to paint the low and outside corner - was a nice sign. it wasn't a great slider and it hung a bit, but it wasn't a bad pitch given that it was going to be a outer-half stike and was thrown on a fastball count. geo is still swinging at fewer than 20% of pitches outside the strike zone, and his walk rate has stayed solid, so it's not like he's going up to the plate and just flailing at everything. he has the tools to adjust to big league pitching; maybe he's not a .900 or 1.000 OPS guy, but even an .800 OPS catcher with good defense is still very valuable for a cheap price.

    we get it No, no! He just got a hit off of it! The past few weeks of sucking have just been a mirage! I hope that this is a turning point and his prolonged slump is done, but it's not like one awesome AB instantly negates how bad he's looked for a few weeks now. he's got just over 300 PAs against major league pitching. pitchers needed some time to adjust to soto and learn what he does well - drive fastballs on the inner half of the plate - and now soto is learning to adjust to what big league pitchers are doing to get him out - throwing him breaking balls and trying to force him to go the other way. most guys are not albert pujols; they don't come up with no holes in their game. for most guys, it's a learning process where they fill the holes in their game over time. good job cubs.
