  1. was he the guy that scored the 100 point basket? i dunno, he was just that random mtv loser who always played in their dumb athletic events.
  2. Formula's are well and good, as are explanations of what the stats mean, but what's the reasoning behind that formula? basically i think it's an effort to give people one super-stat that measures a player's offensive contributions - it includes baserunning as well. a lot of people think OPS+ is supposed to be that stat, but because of how slugging is defined - most of the time a guy is going to have a higher SLG than a OBP. assuming baserunning is basically equal, a player whose OPS is .800, with a .400 OBP and .400 SLG, is easily more valuable than a player with a .300 OBP and .500 SLG, even though their OPS's are equal. anyway, back on EqA. i think clay davenport created it with the intention that fans who are used to batting average can understand it more easily. an EqA of .260 is league average, and this is generally pretty true for batting average as well. so if a guy has a .350 EqA, he's really awesome, and if he has a .190 EqA, he's really atrocious. it's a pretty awesome stat, and probably my favorite "common" offensive stat to use.
  3. i would also like to apologize to bob brenly for saying that his daughter had a stripper name, to prince fielder, daryle ward, cc sabathia and scott eyre for saying they're fat, and every player i've ever said sucks. i am sorry that they had to read such awful comments.
  4. WARP3, 2007-08: tex: 14.3 youk: 15.8 they're a lot closer than most people would think. tex's career EqA is .302, youk's is .295. tex has more power, but youk will get on base a little more, play better defense and also offers some versatility in the ability to play third base. the difference in salaries, combined with the type of year each guy is having, make this a very poor idea for the red sox.
  5. vitters went a boring 1-for-4, that hit being a double. josh harrison - or as i like to call him, youkilis lite - went 3-for-5 with 2 doubles and his 7th stolen base. and, matt craig has a 1.517 OPS in his first five games at iowa.
  6. is this like rock 'n jock softball? has anyone found dan cortese to play in the game?
  7. ah yes, tommy john surgery, the death knell of any pitcher's career.
  8. since i was a little kid i've used two things to try to catch foul balls, my bare hands and my cup of beer.
  9. i might have to add jack cust, who i dropped in the first half ](*,) i'd have at least 214 - actually i'd have more because i could've dropped zimmerman and picked up someone useful - if not for the cust-markakis transaction.
  10. i was at a phillies game sitting behind the plate and off to the left... the left-handed batter fouled one back similar to the way lilly did, just a screaming liner right back at my row. the guy next to me had his daughter with him, she was about 8 or so, and i don't know if it was putting his hand up to protect her or if he really saw the ball coming at her, but he knocked the ball down with one hand, barehanded, right in front of her face. if he hadn't gotten his hand up she'd have broken her nose or eye socket or something worse... it would've been ugly.
  11. craig is 3-3 with 2 doubles... maybe we should've let him try this iowa thing a few years ago.
  12. i agree with these three. i'd also try to keep guys fresh by giving soto, theriot and derosa occasional rest. and getting soriano back/healthy is obviously very important. i'd explore a trade for a LH reliever, as long as the cost isn't too great, but otherwise i'd be pretty much done trading at this point. i feel good about the team the cubs have put together.
  13. wow that didn't take long. he had what, half of a summer as a position player? also, jake muyco got his third save despite giving up a solo homer.
  14. so how long before yost turns sabathia's arm into hamburger meat?
  15. aaron miles has five effing rbi. if i were a mediocre player, i'd just try to get a one year deal out of the cardinals. i'd have a really good year, in the process fooling some some sorry GM into giving me a big contract. i'd then go back to being completely mediocre. this won't work quite as well as it did when bill bavasi was a GM, but there are still enough morons out there.
  16. when one of your primary setup men has an ERA of 6, your team sucks.
  17. and they immediately piss the lead away in the bottom of the 7th... down by 1 again.
  18. EVERYONE VOTE FOR SKYBALLER
  19. thanks for sticking with pineiro for 2 batters too long, tony
