  1. wut? why would the 4 division winners all be mediocre or bad? he's talking about certain division races, not all the teams being mediocre-bad. chances are that one of the divisions would be pretty bad. in the scenario bukie posted, you'd have the royals, rays, rangers and expansion team in the same division. before this year, you'd need about 72 wins to take that division. in the nfl, this format can work - though let's remember that they still have 2 wild card positions - because all the teams are on a level playing field when it comes to payroll. in mlb, the yankees and red sox have higher payroll capabilities than any other teams in the game, and since payroll has a positive correlation with games won, they're also likely to win the most games. putting the two teams most likely to win the most games in the same division is inherently unfair. i'd only support going to 4 divisions if they expanded the playoffs to 6 teams - which isn't something i'd like to see. personally i like the current format.
  2. too long for yahoo, and there's no DL in football. aside from that it's great, though not particularly creative or amusing.
  3. yes but under the rules that they played by during his era, offense was hard to come by, and yet he was very good at providing offense. it's not as silly as derwood's "everyone was very bad at baseball back then," but i don't think that different rules are a good reason to discount someone's ability as a player.
  4. B-R's qualifications: previously, pedro martinez was blowing away the field in the ERA+ department. but mariano rivera has now reached 1000 innings in his career, so he's the leader. Pedro's ERA+: 157. Rivera's ERA+: 197!!! billy wagner has a 180 ERA+, but he's probably not going to reach the required number of innings or decisions. k-rod is at 186 ERA+, but he still has a long way to go.
  5. nah, just pedro. clemens for some random years and maddux at his peak, too.
  6. he played a good number of years with the philadelphia athletics, but i'd put eddie collins on the list. one could reasonably argue that he's the best 2B of all time. fox was very good but not as good as appling or thomas. fisk's best years were with the red sox. ed walsh was really really good, but didn't pitch long enough. joe jackson was really really good, but didn't play long enough. i'd go 1. thomas, 2. appling, 3. collins, though if i were ranking them in terms of their all-time greatness, collins is the easy choice.
  7. Now THERE is an overrated Cardinal. Good lord. what's funny is that so many people call him overrated that now he's become very underrated. he saved about 1 run every 10 games with his defense, which is pretty damn awesome. he didn't have much power or hit for a great average, but he did draw a lot of walks and didn't strike out much. he bunted really well, was a great baserunner and situational hitter. you have to do a hell of a lot of things right to be a legitimate hall of famer with an 87 OPS+, but ozzie smith did all those things right.
  8. why would you put Sosa so low? he had some very good years, but they came in an extreme offensive era. he only had one season with a WARP3 over 10. his career EqA is .292; hartnett's is also .292 and he played a tougher defensive position. billy williams was .299 and he was a cub his whole career. sandberg had 4 seasons of a WARP3 over 10, and i'm giving him a little extra credit since he was extremely productive until his wrist injury. santo's translated stats (if he'd played in a pitching-hitting neutral era) were .275/.370/.506 with 431 homers and 460 doubles; combine that with very good fielding and it's pretty clear to me that he's ahead of sosa. i shouldn't have to explain #2 and #1.
  9. i think it's different when you're on sportscenter and you're presenting highlights. greenberg and wilbon are on sports talk shows, based heavily on their personalities, and as sports fans they're going to talk about the teams that they root for. a sports talk guy who doesn't have favorite teams or doesn't reveal them is probably going to be pretty boring.
  10. is there a trashier organization than the white sox? i certainly can't think of one.
  11. I think Harden can cut his fastball any direction he wants to, and as fragile as he is and with as much success as he has with his arsenal already, i definitely don't want him throwing sliders or curves or anything like that. he bagged his splitter in the offseason because it put too much stress on his arm. he's thrown more innings than he did the last two years combined, so i guess that move was at least somewhat successful.
  12. i think lieber got even fatter while on the DL
  13. my fantasy football team name this year is "Pacman Jones Shot J.R."
  14. $20 to whoever goes to ryan ludwick's house every day and monitors for suspicious packages from a pharmacy in florida.
  15. I hate Dusty baker you should like him... he probably wrecked mark prior, seriously set back kerry wood, and might've cost the cubs a world series in 2003.
  16. if you pay for mlb stuff, it's at 3:08:50 in the archived broadcast.
  17. is harben still on the 40 man roster? he's terrible.

  19. i'm legitimately pissed we dfa's eyre i'm not... he's been pretty lousy since the cubs signed him, so it's really not a loss. See his 2nd half stats last year, and tell me what is lousy about that. the 1.38 WHIP and 5.65 walks per 9 innings? How many runs did he give up? ](*,)

  21. Its also on Howry Lou put him in position to fail. Howry is a Major League pitcher whos job is to get tough rightys out late in the game. Lou screwed up, but its Howrys job to get guys like Carlos Lee out and he hasn't been doing it, so why is he in the game there? not to mention why are you pitching to a very good hitter who crushes against the cubs when you have a pretty lousy hitter behind him?

  23. lou is making some really solid calls in this game.
  24. Where did u hear this? they tried to sign him when he was a free agent.
