  1. good, so when we win this game we'll have another thing to erase 2004 from memory. that team broke my spirit even more than the 2003 team.
  2. 89. Last time they were 25 games over was 1984 I believe. yeah you're right, they finished 1989 at 24 games over .500. the 1984 team was as much as 32 games over .500. it'd be nice to see this team do that :D
  3. i remember i posted a "ryan o'malley feelgood thread" after that game, partly because it was a really cool story, and partly because it was one of the few things to celebrate in a dark, horrid season.
  4. yeah same here... if i was just bumming around at home i would follow the game, but if i had anything better to do (which wasn't difficult, given how atrocious that team was) i would just pretend the cubs didn't exist.
  5. yeah basically the length of game thread at the end of that year was: rich hill starting: 5-7 pages anyone else starting: 1-3 pages, depending on whether (a) fred is doing play by play, and (b) how many people stopped in to say "God this team sucks" or "isn't this damn season over yet"?
  6. how many people really stuck with that team? i remember game threads that were 2 or 3 pages long, mostly fred doing play by play for himself. they were a complete waste of time to follow (except on rich hill days). I'll say one thing, it was a lot less stressful to watch the team at the end of 2006. Losing was expected. If they won, it was gravy. But if they blew a 5 run lead, it wasn't really a big deal because you hated pretty much everyone on the roster. classic game thread - 22 posts TOTAL. these game threads have twice as many before the game even starts. and of course a classic cob lineup: Pierre, CF Fast Freddie, 2B Ramirez, 3B Murton, LF Moore, 1B Blanco, C Coats, RF Cedeno, SS Mateo, P

  8. hey i thought that o'malley game was pretty awesome, with his mom and dad there and a bunch of other family members. took an extraordinary set of circumstances to get him a start in the majors, and then he had a charmed start with hard hit balls hit right at fielders.
  9. Theriot took a fowl off the foot. He ran OK, but they'll probably take him out to be safe. He punted a chicken. Good hang time. darin erstad.
  10. pat burrell also destroys us. i also remember that we couldn't get out that scrubby outfielder alex sanchez. and basically whoever is catching for the reds will hit a home run - paul bako, david ross, javier valentin, etc.
  11. the only conditions ripe for scoring were backe's lack of control and hanging sliders.
  12. thanks for the update! we are all rooting for good health and good pitching from sean.
  13. I hear the roast beef is wonderful. :rotfl:
  14. 2.65 ERA with a 1.47 WHIP... that is some kind of magic trick, byrdak.
  15. I get the feeling Houston's manager isn't very happy with him. yeah this is pretty bad. it's clear that he doesn't have it; i think cooper is trying to teach him a dumb lesson or something.
  16. Given what I've seen of him, and some of the things I've heard him say, I think Cecil Cooper just might be a worse manager than Dusty. i didn't think that was possible.
  17. i saw a pirate game like this earlier in the year... the guy was rolling along and then all of a sudden gave up a bunch of runs. he completely lost it and stopped throwing strikes... the last batter or two he was basically looking over at the dugout pleading to come out of the game.
  18. i'm pretty sure that backe has quit this game mentally. can't believe cooper left him in to hit when they had a good chance to get back in it.
  19. i just hope that the dallas-fort worth area strip clubs have good sandwiches. pacman's gotta eat.
  20. he is NOT a clutch player.
  21. backe had to be walking up to the plate thinking "why the hell am i batting here, aren't i done"
