  1. How to write an ignorant college football article let's look at a couple of his main points: uh oh, here we go. First of all, USC does not schedule only major opponents. this year they did, though virginia was pretty damn bad at the beginning of the year. but last year they played idaho. sometimes they play hawai'i. i don't mean to speak negatively about USC's non-conference schedule, because they do, more than any other prominent team in the country, schedule a rigorous non-conference schedule. but they don't only schedule major opponents. second, is that really what every big ten team does? let's look at ohio st, since penn st is apparently following their lead of playing nobody and making the national championship game. he makes the point that ohio st last year, "beat exactly zero great teams and still made it despite a home November loss." this is true! interestingly enough, he fails to discuss the previous year, when ohio state won on the road at then-#2 texas, and won in their last game of the season against #2 michigan. conveniently at this point, he stops talking about usc, since usc's conference is even a bigger joke than the big ten this year. and do note that the sagarin ratings have the big ten as the #2 conference in the country, while the incredible sec gauntlet rates at #4. but yes, texas does play a tough schedule. ou, mizzou, okie st, texas tech in order? that's a bear. however, texas' non-conference schedule consisted of florida atlantic, utep, rice and arkansas. that's just as big a joke as penn state's non-conference schedule. by far the worst argument in the article. you know why there's not a conference championship game? THERE AREN'T 12 TEAMS IN THE BIG 10. Wow, that's pretty lousy! I would guess that the Big XII and SEC superconferences have a lot of wins over currently-ranked non-conference opponents, right? Big XII: Oklahoma beat TCU at home SEC: really, if you're going to hold the big ten to one standard, then do the same for the other conferences. otherwise you'll write a lousy article like this.
  2. i hope that obama asks to take his oath with his right hand on the koran rather than the bible, just to watch the right wing collectively go insane.
  3. look i know it's opening day for the sixers, but the phillies were playing a potentially clinching game that probably wasn't going to take longer than an hour or hour and a half. i don't think anyone gave a crap about the sixers today.
  4. let's talk to charlie manuel about winning the world series!!! i hope the parade is friday, i can go if it is.
  5. you're missing the point... it's 25 years. try to pretend the bulls didn't win 25 championships in the 90s, that's what it's like. a lot of the people down there haven't been alive long enough to see a philly team win.
  6. 25 years for a city with 4 sports is pretty long. time to fire up the local philly news online, no need to watch joe buck when i can watch people go nuts in philly
  7. fortunately i like the phillies so i am not really thinking about the cubs, but i am even more pissed off at my dad right now.

  9. thinking about walking howard with the lefty pitcher to get to pat burrell? mccarver must think that ned yost is managing the rays.
  10. the curse of william penn - probably even dumber than the curse of the goat or the curse of babe ruth.
  11. boy i'm glad that i'm just sort of a phillies fan, if this was the cubs i might have passed out from the tension.
  12. the postseason has been filled with important and "good" at bats by the phillies? they've been historically bad in situational hitting this world series.
  13. give me a break burrell... you don't have an effing hit in the series and there might be only 2 more innings left in the season, run all out you idiot.
  14. the sixers should be pretty good this year, assuming that brand can stay healthy and the young guys like lou williams and thaddeus young continue improving. a starting five of andre miller, andre iguodala, thaddeus young, elton brand and samuel dalembert, with lou williams, reggie evans, kareem rush and marreese speights coming off the bench is pretty solid... or at least a lot better than the trash the sixers have been rolling out there in recent years. still could use a true shooting guard, though.
  15. soriano isn't nearly as bad in LF as people make him out to be. he'd probably be a little below average in RF, but his arm would be an asset out there. dunn, on the other hand, is God-awful in left, and would be a complete disaster in right. that's not even an option. dunn-fukudome-soriano would be a pretty lousy defensive outfield, but they'd give you a whole lot of offense.
  16. is there an nba thread? i'm considering getting interested in the sixers this year, since they might be pretty good.
  17. as long as we're making homer picks, holy cross 157, bucknell 2.
  18. seriously. couldn't the cubs shop pie before telling everyone "hey we don't have a place for him to play, so give us a couple of C- prospects and he's all yours"
  19. not really... both teams, the umpires and mlb management all agreed that the game would be played a minimum of 9 innings. i'm sure there would be a few phillie fans grumbling, but that's what everyone agreed to. pretty much everyone i talked to at work last night (lots of phillie fans there) thought that the game should be played to completion no matter what. i think they should have played tonight, even though it's cold and windy, but the extra day does mean that hamels would start game seven, if it comes to that. personally i'm hoping the phillies score 15 runs in the bottom of the sixth tomorrow and take all the drama out of it.
  20. michigan will get good again, but we'll see how long it takes. my roommate is a michigan grad who has been in serious denial all year - i told him that they wouldn't beat illinois or michigan st, but he kept picking michigan in our confidence pool. as recently as last week, he was still saying that michigan had a chance to win in the horseshoe this year... he cites some year that michigan wasn't that good and went on the road and beat undefeated ohio st. i asked him "what was michigan's record that year" and he said "8-4." apparently he doesn't realize that michigan is much, much worse than an 8-4 team.
