  1. They started off with a mediocre early schedule and started out good...Lost most of the rest of there games and finished off around .500...So I don't know...They've looked good against some teams and then lost to Iowa 54-0 if kansas played minnesota right now, it wouldn't be close. but bowl games are weird; sometimes teams that are playing horribly at the end of the regular season (minnesota) will get it out of their system and play really well in bowl games. momentum seems to have almost no impact after a month layoff.
  2. i fired off an angry e-mail to the HoF this year saying that i'm not visiting cooperstown again (i went when i was 8) until santo has his rightful place in the hall. i think i included something about them not continuing to select old-timey yankees with a lot of rings too.
  3. i would think that bay would be a good option, playing in a hitter's park in a much better lineup than he's been in the past several years. he had 37 rbi and 39 runs in just 49 games with boston last year.
  4. yeah i tried asking this question about a year ago but people seemed apathetic.
  5. to be fair, most of us won't be alive to see a cubs' world series victory either.
  6. much like if you listen to political talk radio, you'd think that 90% of the population is extremely conservative and the other 10% of the world is extremely liberal.
  7. the 17th greatest 2b of all time (at least in 2001), according to bill james. career warp3 of 94.2 according to BR. ron santo is the 6th-greatest 3rd baseman with a 112.8 warp3. that's why i'm not going to cooperstown anytime soon.
  8. i'm not going again until santo is a member.
  9. one of the all-time great third basemen who then went on to become a longtime announcer for the team he played for? how many rings, zero? f*** that. well wait, what about a pretty good shortstop (rizzuto) who played for a great team, won a bunch of rings and then became an announcer? he's what, like the 25th greatest shortstop of all time? BY ALL MEANS, LET THAT MAN IN.
  10. good, if there's anything the hall of fame needed it was more undeserving yankee players. go f*** yourself, veterans committee.
  11. Congrats. You know how to make yourself look like an ass regardless of outcome. That is a gift. You're also good at math. I'd rather be good at being a human, but whatever. hey at least nsbb is getting a lot of great articles on the front page out of this deal hey meph, can you copy and paste some more baseball america profiles on the guys we drafted better be careful, if you goof on him too much he might, say, make a blog that rips on you and various other members of this board.
  12. In fairness to Meph (I'm sure I'll get toasted for defending him), but he did say that it would be OU/Texas unless the human polls went extremely heavily toward Florida and away from Texas. And they did just that. Not defending the "i'm a bit of a god" thing, though. and i quote: "Sorry guys, Florida's not jumping Texas if Texas can stay ahead of Oklahoma in half the polls." in fact my computer projections were completely spot on, i got them exact. don't strain your neck trying to get down there.
  13. my roommate has called romo "[expletive]" about 20 times in the last 5 minutes. i'm about to punch him in the face, and i hate dallas.
  14. lol
  15. because santo has continued getting closer and the HoF really wants them to pull their thumbs out of their ass and elect somebody, i do have some optimism. i have a couple of friends who live within two hours of cooperstown; i will definitely make the trip up there next summer if ronnie is being inducted.
  16. another fraud - if you take out the last six years of sandy koufax' career, he was a league average pitcher with 54 career wins.
  17. http://lesterslegends.com/?p=4853 Fun fact of the day - Tim Raines son is named Andre, after a good friend of his Andre Dawson. His son would later change his name to Hawk. if you take out 6 years of mark mcgwire's career, he only hit 267 home runs. can't believe we are even considering this guy for the hall of fame.
  18. whatever, if you're a cub fan, a lineup of something like: soriano lee dunn ramirez soto derosa fukudome theriot should make you wet yourself in happiness. that is a high-obp, solid power lineup.
  19. yeah i gotta say, i sure felt better about the back end of the cubs pen the last two years than i do about their pen this year. gregg strikes me as an average pitcher who people think is good because he had a lot of saves the last two years. samardzija still needs an offspeed pitch. wuertz is still pretty good if lou can get over the fact that he will walk more people than you'd like him to.
  20. That there is a "mix" for Jack Wilson makes me sad. The fact that the Pirates FO thinks they can get HU, Delwyn Young, and another player from the Dodgers while the Dodgers still pay all of his salary makes me sad. #-o Maybe they are holding out for a Kemp, Martin and Kershaw packages for him... it's ned colletti, anything is possible.
  21. yeah i don't think that contract was a good idea, even though i guess their thinking was that there will only be one year of overlap from marquis to dempster. mostly i am skeptical that dempster can produce at a $13M per year level for the next 4 years.
  22. please don't do this... if lou is that dumb about his doghouse then tender/trade him. a league-average young guy who can start or relieve has value; don't piss that away.
  23. If that is the hold up, then that's pretty dumb. Dunn shouldn't play RF with Soriano in the same OF. Any manager who would play Soriano in LF and Dunn in RF should be fired. On the spot. So you wouldn't want Dunn, or you would want Dunn but put either Soriano or Dunn in another position. I didn't imply either. I was only saying that RF defense should not factor into whether or not to sign Dunn. LF defense yes, but defense isn't as important in LF as it is in RF. As to what I would do, if Dunn can be had for 3/36 as was suggested, I do that today, and let Soriano know he's going to be in RF, and Fukudome CF. Our overall defense in the OF takes a hit, but it's worth it. agreed. soriano can handle RF; he wouldn't be good out there but he's not nearly as bad as people make him out to be (his arm makes up for a lot of the misplays). dunn, on the other hand, is an atrocious OF no matter where you put him. but with fukudome not hitting for as much power as hoped, and lee's power declining, this would be a very good move.
  24. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't a 280/350/330 line put him somewhere pretty close to replacement level? For a SS? That seems high. That's better than replacement level. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/dt/burriem01.php Duh, I don't know why I didn't go to BP's stats page. So, that line would be about a half a win over replacement for a SS. what? the link above basically has a 280/350/330 line and was 2 to 2.5 wins over replacement, and he had only half as many PAs as a normal starting shortstop.
  25. First off, the Big Ten plays 18 conference games. Secondly, unless you have a bear of a non-conference(Michigan), it's gonna take at least 22 wins to make it from the Big Ten this year. right, so 9-9 would put them at 21 or 22 wins with an ACC road victory. Their B10 schedule isn't easy (they have to play Purdue and Mich St. twice) so 9-9 is probably a stretch anyways. i don't think it's hard to see them making the tourney at all. say they win all of their next 6 games. they should sweep indiana; they're terrible. they've also got: northwestern at home wisconsin home & away purdue home & away michigan st home & away michigan home & away iowa home & away minnesota home & away illinois home & away ohio st away they should be able to split the ohio st/northwestern games. they should also be able to at least split with michigan, iowa, minnesota and illinois. that's 7-5, with 6 games against purdue, wisconsin and michigan st. if they can beat, say, wisconsin and michigan st at home, that's 9-9. even if they win only 1 of those games, they're 8-10 in conference to go with 13-1 OOC so they'll end up at either 21-11 or 22-10 in those situations, and have a pretty good shot at the tourney. they really should win the next 6 games though. temple isn't playing well right now and the other teams are just lousy.
