    making the NIT was totally better than making the big dance and either losing in the first or, if an upset, the second round. i know the NIT gets dumped on a lot, but there are 344 d-i teams and penn st and baylor are better than at least the teams that didn't make the ncaa tourney plus at least most of the teams seeded 13 and higher. that's like 50th out of 344 - the equivalent of something like the peach bowl in ncaa football. congrats to cornley and "i beat off in the library" pringle and "i busted my face open" morrissey.

    well then he's lying because steve phillips is (a) no longer a GM and (b) was never a GM of an american league team.

    he's done it twice in his entire career, and that was when he actually stayed healthy and productive. now he's 40 years old and his numbers have been in serious decline. the chance of him hitting 40 homers is probably less than 1%.

    there's a big difference between major league offices recognizing the value of defensive metrics, and rawlings using them to hand out gold gloves.

    it sure makes the idea of ncaa basketball being for "student-athletes" seem pretty comical. but we pretty much knew that already.

    i would've thought porcello would put the tigers ahead of the cubs. the astros system has been awful for a few years. the padres are a mess at all levels.

    neither is the marlins making the playoffs.

    you should get a nice shot in the arm when a-rod and ervin santana return. as long as you're good enough to make the playoffs i like getting a-rod in the 3rd/4th round (where he's going in most leagues) because it gives you another first round bat for your playoffs. i don't know about felix for nolasco. i'm not sure that nolasco is as good as he pitched in the second half of last season. i guess i probably wouldn't make a trade just for fear of doing the wrong thing.

    i think i have the best hitting but my pitching is pretty mediocre. i spent heavily on pujols and reyes because i thought they were undervalued in the draft - i got them for $41 and $39, and BP's projection tool suggested that they were worthy of around $55 expenditures. i wanted to (a) get bargains on undervalued players and (b) get a couple of elite bats, and i felt like i did that in getting pujols and reyes while still preserving 70% of my money for other guys. with ellsbury, upton, roberts and reyes, i should win steals just about every week, and i think that howard, pujols and chipper will give me a big ops. i could lose RBI some week though - some of those high-steal guys like ellsbury and roberts are just not going to knock in many runs.

    that may also explain why KC is so low. not that they're likely to win it, but i think BP's projection put them at around 10% to win the division. with the amount of young talent on that team, and every team in the division having some significant flaws, i think 10% sounds more reasonable than 1%.
