  1. peter king lived during much of mickey mantle and willie mays' playing careers, and the entire careers of albert pujols, barry bonds, hank aaron, manny ramirez, mike schmidt, alex rodriguez, joe morgan, greg maddux, sandy koufax, bob gibson, roger clemens, pedro martinez and mariano rivera. i wish he were joking.
  2. i too am dubious about their scouting report of castro's defense. and i wouldn't call the cubs' system weak any more; with trades (mostly derosa), improvement and other systems falling back (see cardinals), the cubs are probably middle of the pack.
  3. Normally I would agree with this, but the Padres did just take 2 of 3 from the Cubs. yeah but the cubs suck.
  4. to be fair, three organizations made bad trades involving jason bay before he'd really done anything in the major leagues.
  5. the loduca trade was a good trade; brad penny was a very good in a dodger uniform while loduca (despite the two subsequent all-star appearances) continued to be an average starting catcher. there are columnists in every market who will be old-timey and deride GMs like depodesta for not properly valuing "heart and soul" players like loduca, but fear that the media may not like a guy is no reason to cross a highly-qualified candidate off the list.
  6. seems odd that may lasted to the 36th round. he had good numbers for a strong program and plays a number of positions. i guess it just seems like college juniors with his profile tend to go a lot earlier than the mid 30s, even if they do profile as AA/AAA roster filler.
  7. anyone else want to make the same joke in this thread? we haven't quite reached the point where it's completely, 100% unfunny.
  8. he could be a decent back of the rotation guy i suppose, but the cardinals are already running away with the division so i'm not sure how much that matters at this point. his numbers were pretty good the first 25 pitches of the game, then not so good pitches 26-50, then horrendous 51+. maybe he can be a short-inning guy in the playoffs but unless he comes down with the jeff weaver/jeff suppan magic, i don't think he'll have much of an impact there.
  9. his velocity on the season is down about 1.5 mph (on average) for his FB and close to 2.0 mph on his slider. naturally he will be spectacular for the cards.
  10. Why? As a GM he traded Scott Kazmir for Victor Zambrano. you're right about one thing, a general manager did trade scott kazmir for victor zambrano.
  11. Cedar Rapids is already in the playoffs. They took the wild card in the first half. Our magic number is 6 over Burlington who is currently in the WC spot. Its super confusing. We will likely play Cedar Rapids in the 1st round. and we meet them Friday-Monday up there this week to see how we stack up. thanks for the clarification. you're right, it is definitely confusing.
  12. i wonder how reliable the GB/LD/FB stats are in the minors, especially lower levels. minor league splits has logan watkins at a 10.6 LD%, which seems ridiculously low for a guy who's hitting .344 and seems really good at squaring the ball up. hak-ju lee has a low LD% supposedly. i'm inclined to think these are bogus.
  13. holy cross hosts georgetown at 1 pm. c'mon andy if you are going to list uc-davis i expect holy cross up there too! plus we're picked first in the patriot league, have the two-time PL offensive player of the year returning (he was granted a medical redshirt for his 2005 season - everyone thought he was done after last year) and are ranked #22 in the preseason FCS. i'm going to see them play at bucknell this year, since it's only an hour east of where i'm living now.
  14. well that's because he managed raul. you can't take a manager's advice just because he likes a guy he once managed.
  15. yeah plus those people are wearing shoes. it's only a sport if it involves a nude, shoeless person getting from point A to point B faster than their opponents.
  16. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/events/page.jsp?ymd=20080715&content_id=432783&vkey=events_l118&fext=.jsp&sid=l118 it's very confusing, but from what i can understand the chiefs would have "home field advantage" in their first series (which is best of 3) and they have the option of either playing game 1 at home, or game 1 on the road and then games 2/3 at home.
  17. sucks tthat he got hurt but it's a good sign that he played another inning and a half before coming out.
  18. iowa lost its first game 6-0. samardzija sucked - 4 IP, 8 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 2 HR. iowa leads the second game 2-1; hoffpauir has doubled and scored a run. tennessee won 3-2; they'll be tied for first in their division after west tennessee finishes losing. papelbon pitched well (6.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K, 9 GO/7 FO). castro singled twice in 5 AB, thomas doubled and walked, colvin was 1-3. daytona blew out brevard county 11-2. vitters went 1-4 with (believe it or not) a walk, guyer singled 3 times in 5 AB. dolis had 5 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 1 K, 10 GO/5 FO. peoria had LOB-itis and lost 4-1 despite 11 hits. jackson tripled in his 2 ABs but was PH for in the 5th inning (injury?), flaherty was 2-5 with a double, burke 2-3 with a walk. bristow: 5 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 5 K. cedar rapids lost so peoria's magic number is down to 5.
  19. wow did not see this coming from smoltz. oh wait yes i did, everybody did actually.
  20. vitters broke a 2-2 tie with a 3-run homer in the 7th inning. searle went 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 3 K, 10 GO/5 FO. tennessee won 5-4 as schlitter managed to not blow the lead. castro went 2-4 with a double and walk; he has 8 BB and 3 K in 17 games with the smokies. thomas went 3-4 with a double. carpenter had 5 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 2 BB, 5 K, 5 FO/5 GO. peoria leads 8-0 in the 7th. shafer had a good game and beliveau a scoreless 7th. jackson is 1-5 with 2 K's (he's been striking out a lot lately), lemahieu has 3 singles and 4 RBI, burke has a pair of walks and is 0-2. if they win this one peoria will be on a 6 game winning streak and their magic # is down to 8.
  21. jerry jones is a doofus
  22. don't know if you guys heard, but brett favre played in a preseason game for the vikings.
  23. i'd be fine with them doing this even if it meant eating half his salary in the deal.
