  1. there's little reason not to pitch to pena because he can't hit much any more.
  2. just contract them and gives us ethier, kemp, billingsley and kershaw.
  3. I guess your closer is gonna blow some leads when the offense sucks too much to give him 3 run leads
  4. Colorado and San Francisco? You thinking wild card already?
  5. If Dusty didn't mess with him, I'd like to think he'd still be hitting .260-.275 with 25-30 homers and playing great defense. I saw Corey play this weekend at Fenway. He still has more holes in his swing than a... Well, you get the picture. His pitch recognition is still awful and if you get one strike ahead of him, he's an out. He keeps getting chances because "speed doesn't slump," but he is what he is; a 4th outfielder. Anyway, this is a Starlin Castro thread who's got plate coverage beyond Corey's wildest dreams... he was also a near 5 (4.9 to be precise) win player for the cubs in 2004 yes, he was very good that year. unfortunately, pitchers adjusted to the holes in his approach, and he was unable to adjust as well. too bad.
  6. tennessee or florida should sign him just to piss off georgia
  7. how is boston barely winning a game where the knicks shoot 36% from the field, including a solid 5-26 from bill walker and toney douglas? i guess not being able to rebound is a problem.
  8. seemed like dolis was struggling with his command (26 balls, 21 strikes), but hadn't allowed a hit and only three walks in 2.1 innings. hardly seems like enough to get pulled, so must be a physical issue of some sort.
  9. thank you to roy halladay for pitching like crap tonight and to the a-hole who relieved him for giving up a two out homer to casey mcgehee to tag roy with two more runs.
  10. victor martinez was DL'ed today, so i put him on the injury list and added carlos ruiz.
  11. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/sam-fuld-and-the-value-of-defense/
  12. i think on WSI the word "cubs" is autocorrected to flubs or scrubs.
  13. i remember reading in baseball prospectus that brett jackson might become the first homegrown outfielder to put up a .270 equivalent average (now i think they're calling it true average) and 15 home runs since - billy williams! that's not exactly a high bar to clear; 15 home runs is mediocre for an outfielder and .270 is just a shade above average. to have not developed an outfielder like that in 35 or 40 years is just appalling. Wow, that's incredible. And inexcusable. It's also a bit of a lie. Tyler Colvin was over that last year. I don't think he had enough PA's so it's really not a lie. I guess Kosuke Fukudome doesn't count because he was a Japanese product and is a few homers short. i accidentally left something important out of the statistic, that it was a .270 EqA and 15 home runs in consecutive seasons. that being said, fairly generic outfielders like luke scott and josh willingham don't have much trouble reaching those stats, so it's pathetic that we haven't developed a young outfielder who can hit a few home runs and put up above average offensive production since billy williams.
  14. hockey is half as many games - not a huge difference like the nfl - but playoff spots in both leagues this year came down to games on the last day. now you could make the same argument in hockey, but if a bad goal call costs a team like the rangers a point, and they miss the playoffs by a point, which ends up costing them a chance at a stanley cup along with lots of revenue for each extra playoff game, and you can see how a seemingly minor mistake ends up having huge repercussions.
  15. fun fact of the day, the cubs have the worst babip against in baseball, while the cubs' offense has the third-highest babip in baseball. i guess this game will help bring those stats back toward the mean a bit.
  16. home run for my man ha... first of the year. cerda is 3-4 with a double. simpson sucked (4 ip, 6 h, 4 r, 2 er, 2 bb, 3 k). most of the damage was in the first so at least he sucked a little less after that.
  17. the ones not named mcgee. sorry, didn't know that was a rule. so say i wanted to drop victor martinez and add koyie hill (i do not). can i make the transaction now, or would it process immediately? basically what i'm asking is if the only time you can physically enter the transaction is after the sunday games are completed and before the monday games start?
  18. i remember reading in baseball prospectus that brett jackson might become the first homegrown outfielder to put up a .270 equivalent average (now i think they're calling it true average) and 15 home runs since - billy williams! that's not exactly a high bar to clear; 15 home runs is mediocre for an outfielder and .270 is just a shade above average. to have not developed an outfielder like that in 35 or 40 years is just appalling.
  19. so the rule is for acquisitions that we cannot add/drop during the week? i'd like to make a transaction - do i need to wait until the games are finished on sunday to do so? or can i do it now and it won't process until sunday?
  20. i'm not saying he doesn't have promise, i'm saying that his results as a major league pitcher have been lousy. he has decent peripherals, but his home run rate and line drive rate (27%!) are alarming and suggest that when he misses within the strike zone, he misses in a way such that his pitches get creamed. i'd rather have him in there than some guy like berg who clearly doesn't have major league stuff, but mateo has some work to do before he's considered solid. and if russell is going to face RH batters more than half the time, he can't be considered solid either.
  21. Don't know their cap situation but, with the Sedins, Luongo, Kesler drawing some big bucks I could see them in the Hawks position next season. they're actually in pretty good shape i think. the sedin sisters each have a cap hit of $6.1m, which isn't bad at all for what they give you. kesler (love him) is a steal at $5m. same with samuelsson at $2.5m, and these are all long term contracts. they'll lose at least one d-man i would think - bieksa, salo and ehrhoff are all UFA. would assume they just let salo walk, given his health and age.
  22. also, he thinks that guys who wear affliction t-shirts are douchebags.
