  1. i don't think there's much potential for development. his fastball isn't fast enough and his control isn't that great. he's fine as a back-end guy and may top out as a little above average, but i can't see him being any more than that. which is fine... those guys have plenty of value so that you're not dumping several million a year for the jon garlands and randy wolfs of the world, or having guys like casey coleman and doug davis in your rotation.
  2. no idea where you're getting that from. i looked for torreyes on BP and there were only a couple of mentions from early 2011, and neither one included anything about his defense. then this was in one of his monday ten-packs from june:
  3. some guy for bp writes a feature called "prospects will break your heart" and he had some stuff about szczur recently:
  4. Actually if you told me the cubs would win the world series in 2025 but not before then, I'd take it pretty happily.
  5. Boise/Michigan or even Baylor/Michigan (or heck, Boise/Baylor) would've been a great Sugar Bowl. No one is getting excited for Michigan/Va Tech. I doubt even Michigan fans are that excited. I don't really have a problem with that game - both teams are pretty good and it should be close. I do have a problem with a very good Boise st team facing crappy Arizona st. The spread on the game was 4 touchdowns and the result was the joke that everyone expected. As a college football fan I'd much rather see Boise play someone good, even if it's not a BCS game then someone like oklahoma or Georgia or south carolina. Even michigan st or Nebraska.
  6. He was #62 last year. what can i say, i'm not really wowed by a sub 800 ops in a hitter's league.
  7. if zack cox is a top 100 prospect then there really are not enough good prospects in baseball.
  8. the cards are really top 10? off the top of my head i can't see them being ahead of tampa, toronto, kansas city, texas, oakland, atlanta, pittsburgh and san diego. that's 8 and there are others that are probably better.
  9. holliday was worth 5+ wins last year despite missing 1/4 of the season? without looking it up i'm going to guess that his baserunning/defense WAR was overly optimistic.
  10. so you think it is likely that the cubs signed a couple of dime-a-dozen players who were not in high demand because they have a trade in the works? why not make sure the trade gets done and then sign the generic extra outfielder and middle reliever?
  11. Because that's clearly what I implied and not that if Byrd or Soriano are traded and Jackson starts then it makes sense to add an extra righty for the outfield and if some of our right handed relievers are traded or even put in the rotation then Corpas makes sense. i tried reading that sentence twice and my headache just got worse and worse. comma, semicolon, just any kind of punctuation... we're begging you.
  12. i like how the very reasonable byrd and dempster contracts are being lumped in with those belonging to zambrano and soriano.
  13. yeah that's probably it, the cubs signed reed johnson and manny corpas in order to make a blockbuster deal.
  14. Junior Lake, Giosker Amaya, Oscar Hernandez, Logan Watkins, Javier Baez(although he's supposedly ticketed for 3rd) I think we have enough middle infielders especially since I'm hoping that SS will be held down by Castro for many, many years. junior lake will outgrow ss if he hasn't already. amaya and marco hernandez are teenagers in short season ball, logan watkins is more of a utility guy, and baez is going to outgrow ss.
  15. our system is not full of middle infielders, and everyone's system is full of guys with a ceiling as a mid-rotation guy.
  16. gee i would hate to see this very good boise st team play another good team instead of a .500 team with a lame duck head coach.
  17. generally not big on guys in their first full season coming off tjs, but i'm sure the money is insignificant so meh.
  18. who cares how many prospects are involved? if one of the prospects is someone like julio teheran or shelby miller, we don't need 3 or more guys in return.
  19. if the return for garza is drabek and gose i will burn down wrigley field.
  20. i am still annoyed that this trade is "sean marshall for travis wood and prospects" while the gio gonzalez trade went down with everyone knowing the names of the prospects involved within like 5 minutes.
  21. can i discuss matt barkley going back to usc in the politics and prince fielder threads too?
  22. era+ is hardly an advanced metric. it's just era adjusted for park effects and normalized to 100.
  23. Cubs to Completely Rebuild by Not Signing a Player Who Was Never a Member of Their Organization
  24. roast already has this [expletive] locked up.
