    Hey we got Dunn out again, now he's only hitting .400 against the Cubs this year and he's only hitting HRs in 20% of his ABs against the Cubs!

    He has a database, not sure how he maintains it. Yeah I figured that... I guess whatever he has written to search the database must be a good program. I was curious because as a part of my masters thesis I had to write code to extract data from massive files, and I was guessing Fred's program does a similar sort of thing.

    CUBS are 16-7 when they take 4 or more walks, 30-38 when they don't CUBS are 11-40 when they issue 4 or more walks, 35-4 when they don't Wow, that one really stands out... wasn't expecting it to be such a huge difference! I think I'm not officially depressed, because the Cubs have only drawn 4+ walks in 23 of 91 games. I guarantee you teams like the Cards, Red Sox and Yankees have a much better rate than 1 out of every 4 games for drawing 4 walks. Thanks for the info!

    Fred your meaningless stats are great... can you give me one? What's the Cubs' record when they (a) walk 4 or more times, and (b) when the Cubs allow 4 or more walks?

    Especially that other Dunn, he's brutal. D'oh! Meant Wily Mo for the "second Dunn". He really is similar to the young Sammy Sosa... time will tell if he finds the plate discipline to become a great hitter.

    Wow some of these guys on the Reds make Corey Patterson look like a contact hitter... 97 K's for Dunn, 61 K's for Dunn in about 185 PA's, and 64 K's from LaRue in about 240 PA's. Dunn it's easier to swallow because of the walks and the power, but the other two... yikes!

    Wow Claussen got hit like a pinata... 5 HR! Williams is good... wonder if he'll even be in the rotation next year since the Cubs are stuck with Maddux :evil: Does anyone else have a problem with Blueheart's sig slowing down their computer? If not, I'll just have to accept that my computer is old and slow.

    In other overachieving Cardinal news, David Eckstein is about to surpass his career high in walks with 50 games remaining in the season. And Abraham Nunez's OPS is still over .100 higher than his career average. I would include Reggie Sanders on this list, but it's an odd-numbered year so he's supposed to do well. Oh and thirty-something relievers Al Reyes and Julian Tavarez are having career years. On the flip side, Rolen has sucked.

    Glad to hear it. I played a soccer game here in the DC area -- 100% humidity, 95+ degrees and no wind. It was freaking awful. Sorry but as a meteorologist I am gonna have to call you on this one... 100% humidity with 95 degrees would mean a dewpoint of 95 degrees, and I can't recall a time when the dewpoint in the United States was ever above 85. It's hard to get a dewpoint above 75 in DC in the afternoon, especially with a temperature of 95+. http://www.erh.noaa.gov/data/obhistory/KDCA.html RH's were around 60-70% all afternoon, which is definitely bad for the DC area - but 95 degrees with 95 dewpoint would be the craziest weather observation I've ever seen. :D OK, please resume minor league baseball discussion...

    I don't know but whatever it is is more than just luck. Good scouting? Jocketty seems to have some kind of gift lately for finding guys who will thrive under our system. They are average elsewhere, but bring them to STL and the blow up. They obviously saw something in Carpenter, though, that's not just a lucky break. They signed him when he was already injured after Toronto released him and let him get healthy. He was great last year, then had the nerve problem in the elbow that cut his season short. Right now he's practically unhittable. It is aggravating to watch this, as a Cub fan. How did they know Carp wouldn't get hurt worse? And what did the scouts see in Tony Womack? That seemed kind of like a desperation move to fill a hole in the middle infield. I guess we really can't complain too much though. Guys like Randall Simon did well for themselves with the Cubs, so we do get our share. I guess I'm forgetting Glendon Rusch too. Look at Jim Edmonds' stats before and after the trade to St. Louis. Before the trade he was very good, but frequently injured and never put up an OBP above .375 or an OPS+ above 137. Since he joined the Cards his OBP has been above .400 every year except one, and his OPS+ has been 148 or better each year. Plus he's been a lot more durable.

    Tough luck for him... I'm sure with the game he was having that he would've loved to have a shot at the perfect game.

    I'm impressed that he was able to know that Tony Womack would put up career-best numbers at age 34 too.

    They took out the guy with a perfect game through 6 innings, and the guy who replaced him gave up a hit to the first batter he faced. BOOOOOOOOO

    1. In my mind, comparing high school guys and college guys is kind of apples and oranges. If Dopirak had proven himself at a level like the MWL three years in a row (Patterson's years in the ACC), I think it would have been a no-brainer to move him up. I doubt very much that Patterson will struggle at Daytona the way Dopirak has this year. 2. That makes sense, there is kind of a logjam. Still, I consider him easily the best prospect out of those guys you listed, so my clamoring for a promotion is based more on what I think would be best for his development than the state of the rest of the Cubs' system. Personally, I'd like to see him in West Tennessee next year. One level at a time would get him to Chicago in 2008 or 2009, which is much to slow for a player of his age and ability. P.S. - I don't know much about this Estrada guy but he's, uh, having a decent game so far. That's all I have to say about that.

    During the offseason the Cubs should pick up as many average players as possible and hope they turn out good. It works for Walt Jocketty... why not us?

    I changed my mind, the Cubs are contenders to make the postseason... if they can play the Pirates every game for the rest of the season.

    The latter two I don't think need to go anywhere, being high school guys who generally move up the ladder a rung at a time. It doesn't make sense to me to leave Patterson at a level comparable to the one he's played at for 3+ years now, especially when he's proved to be more than capable at that level.
