  1. This just in - Royals fans are laughing at the Cubs offense
  2. Boy am I sure looking forward to another 2 3/4 years of Jacque Jones in a Cubs uniform! :pukel:
  3. Vegas Vegas won't offer bets on things that are sure things. Helen Keller could see a Pierre groundout to 2B coming.
  4. Man, I can't believe some of these losers are still in the major leagues. Eric Young and Vinny Castilla??? Come on. I'm surprised they don't have Jesse Barfield in the lineup, rather than his son.
  5. Yeah I was hoping he'd walk too, so that we could see Pierre ground out to second with the bases loaded again.
  6. Boy, Eric Young, Mike Cameron, Mike Piazza, Brian Giles, Vinny Castilla and Ryan Klesko (DL) - these guys would have one hell of an offense if it were 1999.
  7. And he has 30 walks to 8 strikeouts this year. Note that the following players are considered among the best hitters of all time (listed in order of OPS+): Babe Ruth (2062 BB/1330 K in 2503 G) Ted Williams (2021 BB/709 K in 2292 G) Barry Bonds (2311 BB/1434 K in 2730 G) Lou Gehrig (1508 BB/790 K in 2164 G) Rogers Hornsby (1038 BB/679 K in 2259 G) Mickey Mantle (1733 BB/1710 K in 2401 G) Ty Cobb (1249 BB/~500 K in 3035 G) Jimmie Foxx (1452 BB/1311 K in 2317 G) Mark McGwire (1317 BB/1596 K in 1874 G) Stan Musial (1599 BB/696 K in 3026 G) Not to mention others like Tris Speaker, who had a 4:1 BB/K ratio, or Willie Mays, who walked about once every other game. Now, one might think that somebody in the Cubs' system would look at baseball history and say "hey, it looks like the guys who controlled the strike zone the best and forced pitchers to throw good pitches" or "hey, Albert Pujols is having his best season and it happens to coincide with him honing his plate discipline even further." But, I guess they'd prefer to just cast their lot with the Jacque Jones, Juan Pierres and Neifi Perezes of the world.
  8. Not tonight, that's for sure.
  9. Hey, ground out to second by Pierre.... who saw that coming??? Oh that's right, everyone.
  10. Yes, and they eased him back in the following season with 287 innings (including the playoffs) pitched - at age 23/24, nonetheless. Then he threw 282 the following year. In retrospect, he's fortunate his career turned out so well. A workload like that would have destroyed many young pitchers' futures.
  11. Also, Randy Johnson has averaged 114 pitches per game during his major league career... pretty amazing.
  12. Roger Clemens threw 118, 119 and 121 pitches per start from age 25-27, and probably around that many at age 24. Livan Hernandez threw 119 pitches per start at age 23, 113 per start at age 24, and 116 per start at age 25.
  13. Yeah, that guy's take is stupid. I'm sure Prior really wants to be out of the lineup all the time. If he's continued to pitch like he did in 2003 - outstanding and durable - he'd have been in line for one of the largest free agent contracts for a pitcher in history. Instead, he hasn't pitched all that great the last two years, and he hasn't been durable at all. I really doubt that Prior wants to be costing himself $100 million like he's doing.
  14. Truest statement in this thread
  15. That's certainly possible, and he could very well have flamed out because of it. In the Cubs defense, I can't think of any top end pitchers that were abused in one year and had it cost them their career in the last ten years, and nearly all top pitchers are abused at some point if not all the time. I would have thought that month off would have given him time to recover. Name me one 21, 22, 23 year old pitcher that was abused like Prior and didn't suffer any consequences. Greg Maddux and Roger Clemens
  16. I propose that last place be named the "Rey Ordonez Award"

I've got Pujols, Delgado, Gomes, Swisher and Thome, plus Dunn (10) and Giambi (9) were close to making the list. Huff (0) and Helton (1) are not doing much for my cause.
  18. Roger Clemens is becoming a bigger joke than Favre or Michael Jordan at the "retired or not retired" game. Just go away you fat prima donna.
  19. Perhaps NSBB would pay for me to go scout Cub prospects in the Hawaiian Winter League? '[-o<'
  20. I agree. Only problem is, I like Todd Walker and think he's undervalued and a bargain. Plus, he's hardly the problem with the Cubs offense. The real problem is having a CF who can't get on base and a RF who can't hit.
  21. He's always had tools and youth on his side. What he hasn't had is anything close to acceptible plate discipline, which will be his doom unless he learns it very soon.
  22. Good thread idea, but it's just not the same.
  23. Somebody once suggested that I take a class on optimism, but I knew that crap wouldn't work.
  24. you are right, i am not buying that study. there are too many variables that study doesnt take into account. things like rookies/veteran status, lefty/righty matchups, the way the pitcher throws, and how hard he throws...just a ton of things that you cant quantify. For instance, Mr Vargas from the Fish is 0 for 15 lifetime in giving up stolen bases. You cant honestly tell me that having a Pierre or Jones or Perez or Lee standing on 1st base jumping around and threatening to steal doesnt have an effect on his head. It not only changes the way he delivers the pitch, but may change the pitch as well. Instead of throwing a guy a breaking pitch, he might start him off with a fastball- which may in fact result in a hit. Just ask Tim Hudson how he feels about giving up SBs tonight after the Lee fiasco in Beerland cost him the game. Well, all I can say is that you and Dusty Baker have a very different view of baseball than I do.
