  1. I don't know that *I* have time to do something like that. I want to do a thorough job in my rankings and feel good about what I came up with. I can sit down and look through about the top 20-25 guys at one position and narrow that down to 10, and then rank those guys, but I don't think I have time to sit and look at guys 26-50 and consider whether they squeeze into a list of 25 players. I'm not against doing a top 25 or 30 overall, but for each position, that just seems a bit much to me. I will do all the outfield positions - LF, CF and RF - individually, and will break pitchers up into starting and relief. I also think we can go a bit deeper - maybe 20 or 25 deep - for starting pitchers. Given the number of positive responses, I think this idea is a go. I'll start it off with catchers at some point in the next few days. I'll use the Bill James rankings as a guide to put down about 30 names for people to consider, although everyone is free to go off the board. I'll make sure the players are listed randomly, not in the order that James ranks them.
  2. 2 homers for Thome tonight, plus Swisher, Giambi and Aubrey Huff, who all of a sudden has remembered how to be a good baseball player (OPS over 900 since the beginning of June). Delicious.
  3. maybe they're placing too much emphasis on "johnson size" as one of the voting categories
  4. I like Pink Floyd, and I voted that way, but listening to them for more than an hour while driving induces extreme tiredness.
  5. I'm still not convinced the Beatles are your classic definition of a rock band. At least these days, they'd be considered much more pop than rock. So, they won't get my vote to win it all, but I did vote for them here.
  6. Well I'm too lazy to figure out what the rest of y'all have, but I've got 218.
  7. haha, what now? Michigan and MSU had a combined 3 games before they played Notre Dame. Are you seriously going to say that people overrating Notre Dame is due to their opponents? Isn't the entire reason they were overrated due to their murderous-but-oh-wait-a-minute-not-really schedule? You can't help everything, I guess, but Pitt-Mich-MSU, even with what ended up happening, is still a much tougher opening three games than what the majority of BCS conference schools face to open things up. That's nice. They still played a weaker schedule than most of the big boys. You can't compare Notre Dame's first three games to other teams' first three games because Notre Dame plays a non-conference schedule the entire season.
  8. OK, so I had this idea driving home today. I'm very interested in the history of baseball, and maybe some others are as well. The idea I had was to rank the top players of all time, based on position. I'd do about one per week, and people could submit their top 5 or 10 (depending on how deep people wanted to go per position), say, first basemen of all time. I have the Bill James Historical Baseball Abstract, and could provide a lengthy list of options at each position, along with a link to each player's stats on baseball-reference.com. It would take a fair amount of work on your part - i.e., I don't want to see Mark Grace or Steve Garvey on people's lists ahead of Jimmie Foxx. I'd take everyone's votes and assign point values to each, then ati the end of position, post the consensus ranking for each position. Then after running through every position (the nine positions, plus starting pitcher and relief pitcher) we can do a top 10 or 20 players of all time, regardless of position. I think it would be fun and spark some interesting debate. Anyway, let me know whether this idea interests you by voting in my poll. If it does, I'll start this up next week.
  9. Please don't have a fire sale. I'd hate for this awesome core the Cubs have built to be dismantled.
  10. Now to be fair, Notre Dame did play Pitt (5-6), Michigan State (5-6), Washington (4-7), Purdue (5-6), BYU (6-6), Tennessee (5-6), Syracuse (1-10) and Stanford (5-6) last year. Those teams all used to be really good! Like remember how Pitt went to the Fiesta Bowl in 2004? Or how Washington went 12-1 and beat Miami in 2000? What about Jim McMahon at BYU, and their undefeated season in 1984? Tennessee won the national championship as recently as 9 years ago. Donovan McNabb went to Syracuse, and John Elway went to Stanford! Boy, what a schedule.
  11. U of M has the same problem as the Cubs. Head coach. Carr is outcoached every game. I wouldn't say that. Last year he won the game against Penn State with the way he worked the referees.
  12. They came close though, and that's what counts. Close only counts in horsehoes. Don't forget about hand grenades and suicide bombing. and dancing
  13. I bet I can think of one you'd put on your list.
  14. By the way, Zambrano now has a higher SLG% than half of the Cubs' regulars.
  15. Who are you, and what have you done with the Cubs?
  16. Let's all welcome Dusty Baker to the board!
  17. Well, since the Cubs are worthless, I'll take a look around baseball. The following are my favorite players, by position. Why, you may ask? Most of them, I don't have a reason for. C: Joe Mauer & Ramon Hernandez 1B: Ryan Howard & Kevin Youkilis 2B: Brian Roberts & Mark Loretta 3B: Miguel Cabrera & David Wright SS: Carlos Guillen OF: Jason Bay OF: Grady Sizemore & Vernon Wells OF: Trot Nixon & Bobby Abreu DH: Travis Hafner SP: Roy Halladay SP: Francisco Liriano SP: Derek Lowe SP: Jeremy Bonderman SP: Kelvim Escobar RP: JJ Putz RP: BJ Ryan RP: Juan Rincon RP: Brad Lidge RP: Joe Nathan RP: Joel Zumaya
  18. What's the Stanley Cub?
  19. Well then you better hope the fans and/or players vote him in. B/c Ozzie won't. If he is on the final man ballot, I will stuff it with Mauer votes. Care to make a wager on this? Same here, I'll bet as well. Just b/c Ozzie is a prick doesn't mean he'll pass up a guy hitting close to .400 He's got a personal vendetta w/ Gardenhire. If the Twins have a rep and it's not Mauer, Ozzie won't take him. He has already said he will stack it with his guys and he doesn't care if he pisses off others. I guess he'll leave off Santana and Liriano too?
  20. It's not that they're giving him one...it's that they've already given him one and have been waiting for the right time to announce it. They're going to be waiting a long time, considering how badly the team sucks.
  21. The Cubs' record is 29-51. If they're giving Baker a contract extension, what exactly does that say about management's aspirations? Do as bad a job as possible, keep your job. Fantastic.
  22. Haha that didn't take long!
  23. Perfect game through 6 1/3 innings.
  24. Well then you better hope the fans and/or players vote him in. B/c Ozzie won't. If he is on the final man ballot, I will stuff it with Mauer votes. Care to make a wager on this? Same here, I'll bet as well. Just b/c Ozzie is a prick doesn't mean he'll pass up a guy hitting close to .400
