  1. HAY WHAT ABOUT THE WHITE Sox
  2. I was going to say Marmol hitting a HR is worse, but he was a position prospect for like 3 years before moving to the mound, and had a 648 OPS in the minors (albeit with only 1 HR). So yeah, allowing Bynum to reach base twice is rock bottom. Two teams this year have allowed him to reach 3 times in a game :D this can't possibly be true

  4. Contract year for Wilson still, Shawn Chacon? At least get a pitching prospect with a live arm. Instead they trade for a 28 year old pitcher with an ERA of 7. Way to go, Pirates.
  5. 9 walks and hits in 4 innings, not too good there
  6. Can't believe this bum Chacon is all the Pirates got for Craig Wilson
  7. wow, 6 IP in a row by Marmol without walking someone... miracles never cease
  8. I will say, this idea does explain why the most prominent team in baseball, in the biggest media market in the country, has had such a hard time winning championships. Their players just struggle under the pressure.
  9. There was certainly a correlation last year - Beltran got off to a terrible start and ended up having a mediocre (for him) season. Yeah, and now he's having his best major league season by far. Kind of throws a monkey wrench into your theory.
  10. I take it you were up in arms when Sosa beat McGwire for the MVP in 1998, then? I was 11, so I don't think I really had much of an educated opinion. Ah, I see. Well, I will say that Howard will likely finish with numbers basically as good as Sosa's, and his competition will have numbers significantly worse than McGwire.

  12. Look at the empty game thread. I was going to say, the game thread is as poorly attended as the actual game.
  13. If it were harder, then we'd probably see marked differences in performance when players go from one to the other. I think you do see that. Look at the stats of Edgar Renteria where he had 30 errors with Boston and only 11 so far this year. AROD in NY has how many errors at 3rd base. You can't tell me the fans getting on him isn't pressure? What City other then NY would boo AROD as much as they have? Cory Patterson feeling the heat last year? Yeah, David Ortiz sure went in the toilet after going from small-market, no-pressure Minnesota to the media frenzy in Boston.

  15. Since returning from the injury/personal issues... 33 games, 292/331/504/835, 7 HR Sean Casey's numbers since coming to the Tigers... 32 games, 236/270/336/606, 2 HR There's something more going on here. Whether he's been disruptive in the clubhouse or has more off the field problems, there's no way that he couldn't have been at the very least a very good power bat off the bench - and the numbers suggest he should've been starting over Casey.
  16. Well said. While I'm saying intelligent things, I'll also note that Beltran has had a really, really good year, and Miguel Cabrera happens to be #2 in VORP to Pujols. Both those guys have an OPS of 1.000 playing half their games in a pitchers' park. So, it'll likely be Howard or Pujols, but two other NL guys have been truly great this year as well.
  17. Cubs (56-83) J. Pierre CF F. Bynum 2B A. Ramirez 3B J. Jones RF A. Pagan LF S. Moore 1B H. Blanco C R. Cedeno SS S. Marshall P Give Dusty credit, he saw that the Pirates were starting a crappy pitcher, so he countered with an equally bad lineup. For all his mistakes, at least he was able to recognize that today's game is a must-lose.
  18. Well, if he didn't figure it out, he should have been a goner. One can't keep throwing a guy out there with a 9.00 ERA. Like if the Cubs had called him up on July 28 and he got hammered from that date until the end of the year, can you really go into next year with that guy in your plans? But, I think Hill would've been farmed out again if he'd had about 3 bad starts in a row after coming up. To his credit, two of his first four starts were real strong, and he's made the most of his opportunity. Plus, there isn't much positive about so many pitchers getting hurt, but if Wood, Prior, Marshall and a host of others had stayed healthy this year, Hill would likely have never seen the bigs. So, the injuries and the crappy record have given the Cubs to find out more on their young guys for next year.
  19. I honestly won't have a problem with either guy being picked. They're both having great years and I think they're both worthy choices. When you think about the joke that is the NL Cy Young "race", be happy that the NL MVP will have proved himself much more worthy.
  20. Are you freaking kidding? After his poor start of the season, demotion to the bullpen, and demotion to AAA, every start is a pressure situation. Pressure is an individual phenomenon not a team or group one. When I am golfing and am lining up a 4 foot put for par, with no money on the line, no crowd, and just my friends watching is one of the biggest pressure situation I face on a weekly basis. I don't agree with you. Even if he failed this time around he would've gotten serveral more shots at the bigs because of his stats in the minors. Todd Walker once said it's easy to play for smaller market teams that draw no fans because there is no pressure. Playing for Boston and NY is far more pressure, where you are expected to excel from day 1 and expected to win. Yeah but he's a Cub, so he's clearly not expected to excel.
  21. --Joe Paterno I'm surprised so far at the lack of media play for this kind of thing. Paterno doesn't exactly hide his dislike for Notre Dame, but if you asked the average fan, they wouldn't know what you were talking about. You'd think it'd be a bigger story that the 2nd winningest coach in big time college football history hates the "university of college football in America" (Kornheiser's words), especially when they are playing on Saturday. Joe hasn't spoken to the media this week and isn't allowing his players. Sometimes the national media doesn't have a clue about college football or more "local" stories, but what they were saying yesterday is true. Paterno has been asked a lot about Charlie Weis, Notre Dame's turnaround, Notre Dame mystique, etc. It's pretty insulting to a guy who has been in college football since Weis was in high school, and built a great football school with a mystique of its own from the ground up.

  23. I don't know that he's a stud or a true #1 starter, but you know what you're going to get out of him every year, and he'll show up on the mound every 5 days. I think we've all seen how important that is.
  24. yep, and all those running and passing plays were cutting into valuable truck and beer advertisement time Don't forget erectile dysfunction!
  25. I wouldn't count on Mark Prior to be in the rotation next year. That's fine - the Cubs have plenty of arms who can be serviceable replacements as a #5 starter.
