  1. Well, it helps to be playing the abysmal Chris Simms.
  2. Youngstown State... just what Penn State needs after a rough loss. Also, how could you omit the huge Holy Cross-Harvard game
  3. wtg eagles
  4. Hopefully the Cubs can continue to play inspired baseball.
  5. Uh, how about I didn't watch any of these games? Unlike you, I didn't pore through the other top 25 games looking for other examples of running the scores up. I was talking about the game that I actually watched. But, here's how I feel about the games above: * Auburn - not running the score up. They were only up 3 scores with more than a quarter to play, their starters should be in and they should still be throwing the ball *Florida - running the score up - no reason to be throwing the ball with starters and a 35 point lead in the 4th quarter *LSU - not running the score up, more than 5 minutes left in the 3rd quarter *Nebraska - the first one isn't a problem; the second one is a questionable, but there was more than half of the third quarter left. I have a bigger problem with still having the starting QB in the game, throwing the ball for the rest of the third quarter with a 42 point lead against a clearly outmatched opponent. I guess the problem I have with the fake punt is that it's a move used to give a team a spark when it's struggling, or to catch the other side off guard in a close game. I don't know that I've ever seen a fake punt from a team with a 24 point lead. To me, I think it just screams of Weis stroking his ego. And, I think it would've been smarter to save the fake punt for the Michigan game if it's close. There's no way the Wolverines will be caught off-guard now. The other factor is, does a team need to get its starters some work? Penn State had many new offensive lineman and a new QB, which is why those guys were left in for so long. Did Quinn, Samardzija and Walker really need the extra experience in the 4th quarter yesterday? Not so much.
  6. boo ohio state
  7. We were down 19 to Michigan State last year, heading into the 4th quarter. Of course we came back to take that one into overtime. I'm slightly amazed that everyone thinks a 24 point lead would be insurmountable for an '05 BCS team, midway through the 3rd quarter. Let's say we punt, and PSU returns it for a TD. All of the sudden, its a 17 point game midway through the 3rd. All this Notre Dame hate for a 41-17 win is ridiculous. 41 points is not running up the score, regardless of who was in the game in the 4th quarter. PSU hadn't put in their second string, and good teams can make a game of 24 point deficits in the 3rd quarter. I'm less pissed about the fake punt than the 4th down plays, playing all the regulars early in the 4th quarter up 31 points and throwing a TD pass. Maybe sometime down the road Weis will do this and one of his big offensive stars will suffer a serious injury, and he'll think twice about piling on next time.
  8. Guess the Marlins figured out how to pitch Howard tonight - 2 for 2 with a single and double, and 4 walks.
  9. Notre Dame dropped two spots because they very nearly lost that game, not because the margin of victory was small. If they'd been in control of the game most of the way and won by a TD, that would've been different. That is crap and you know it. Notre Dame controlled the entire second half especially on defense, but since they didn't score enough, the pollsters dropped them. Notre Dame was trying to score in the 2nd half and didn't. You're mixing this up with when teams get a big lead and just run the ball to avoid embarrassing their opponent. Tech had the ball on first down in ND territory with 7 minutes left in the game - that's not exactly a walk in the park.
  10. anybody who disagrees with this is really just kidding himself Thats just not true. The Irish fell in the polls by not winning by enough last week. It would be idiotic to not "run up the score" every chance you get. You can't run up the score when you're losing most of the game. Notre Dame never had the chance to run up the score because they were holding on by the skin of their teeth. It's not like Notre Dame had the opportunity to score another 2 TDs and didn't out of sympathy for their opponent.
  11. Notre Dame dropped two spots because they very nearly lost that game, not because the margin of victory was small. If they'd been in control of the game most of the way and won by a TD, that would've been different.
  12. point and laugh! :P
  13. By the way, are you saying it is totally fine for Joe to run up 56 in the first half on Illinois with his starters, as long as he doesn't pull that in the second half? Somehow that is fine, but Weis lacks class. Penn State didn't throw the ball the entire 2nd half of that game. What do you want them to do? If Illinois is bad enough to give up 56 points in a half of football, that's their problem... Penn State wasn't trying to rub their nose in it and they took their foot off the gas before the first half was even through. That's different than keeping your first string in and going for 4th down conversions when up 31 in the 4th quarter. I think beating a ranked team by 20+ points is impressive enough for the voters.
  14. haha wtg Hoosiers
  15. Free Shoes U. is losing to TROY at halftime, 3-0. What bad offense.
  16. No, it never would have happened because Paterno doesn't run up the score on people. That's why I'll have to side for Michigan next week, because a few years ago they were up 20 points on PSU at the half and ran the ball between the tackles in the 2nd half rather than embarrass Penn Well you're definitely rooting for the right team then, you seem to know as little about winning with class as your boy Charlie does.
  17. We were just messing around. your backup QB is awful
  18. Or a passing TD from the ND starting QB to the ND starting RB in the 4th quarter with a 31 point lead? It's bush league and it's all about Weis' ego - especially the trick play late in the 3rd.
  19. Yup, rooting for Michigan
  20. 31 point lead in the 4th and Quinn is still throwing the ball to Samardzija, with Walker still in at tailback. Gosh, I might have to root for Michigan next week.
  21. hooray for fake punts up 24 points... classy move charlie and then go for a TD on 4th down when you need a FG to go up biony 4 scores... fatty isn't making any friends today
  22. At least his wasn't a grand slam like Lee hit last night. The Cubs were able to overcome it and retake 3rd place. True "All About Me" Lee rightfully sat today, but somehow talked himself into the game and got a hit, what a jerk. Fortunately, Chris Duffy is even less of a team player.
  23. --Joe Paterno If he, or anyone for that matter, believes that Penn State has half the history of Notre Dame then he really is completely senile. another golden domer crawls out of the woodwork
  24. Had me until this. What filth. How can he clamor about OBP, but suggest sitting our third best OBP guy? .296/.360/.429/.789 This is a good line for a young player who is just now discovering his power (the slg is trending up). I can't believe that we absolutely HAVE to have Carlos Lee or his clone in LF. Murton is an [expletive] bargain for his production. Why don't we just platoon Jones with Moore/Mabry/RH Power Guy? I think we have a .825 OPS guy right here. If the power continues to develop, you found a 5-6 hitter. If not, put that .360 OBP in the 2-slot. I wonder how many runs that would have added, especially with Aramis destroying the world right now? Bruce loses credibility in my book for this one. Lamenting OBP and then ignoring it are standards of Dusty and Company, not our very own voice in the media. /disappointment I wonder if someone with the sig "Archbishop of the Church of Murton" is a little biased on the subject? He had a good month in August as far as power goes - but is this really indicative of a guy who is a real 5/6 hitter, or just a rare streak of power. The guy hit 24 minor league homers in 266 games, and has 10 in 122 games this year. Most likely, he isn't going to hit more than 20 HR next year, and the figure could be closer to this year's total (likely 14 or something). His SLG in the minors was .451 and this year is .429. He just isn't a big power bat. I don't think the Cubs have enough power in the lineup with Murton in LF and Jones in RF, unless they sign someone like Soriano.
