  1. i don't think he's going to provide that big of a boost, personally. While that is a convinving argument, I look at the fact that he had a 906 OPS in April last year (before he got hurt), 891 OPS the year before, and 927 OPS the year before that. Yes but HGH-aided Bonds aside, players generally tend to decline after their early to mid-30's. Sammy Sosa went from very good to out of baseball in a very short time frame. It's certainly a defensible position to say he won't do much in Detroit, and it's also defensible to believe he'll make a pretty big impact. When you're talking about players skills declining, it's kind of a crap shoot.
  2. There have been some signs that OBP is being valued, and will be addressed. still, I'd like to hear some hint from a Cubs' reporter (a legitimate one, not Levine or Sullivan), MLB insider or the team itself, that there is any interest in Drew. Until then, I assume there is none.
  3. somebody explain this line to me: Wake Forest at Florida State (-8.)
  4. Me too. Why? They'll both turn into Chris Carpenter parts II and III if the Cards sign them to long-term deals.
  5. I am surprised not too many are mentioning this. Because it's not particularly true, especially since he's left St. Louis. He missed more than half the 2005 season. I know a lot of people want him, but when you sign him you have to guess that he'll likely miss about a quarter of the season.
  6. Yanks HAVE to be throwing a good amount of money in to make this happen. Everyone knew they didn't have a place for Sheff.
  7. Maybe not everyone involved is convinced letting go of the biggest star and talent remaining in Japanese baseball two years before you have to is a good idea. Yeah, but aren't the Lions in some financial trouble? Kind of hard to turn down $20+ million dollars. not to mention he wants to come to the U.S., so not accepting it would just mean they'd have an upset player next year.
  8. Mark Loretta has made $6 million TOTAL the past two years, and his career OBP is .363. He isn't going to get that much in free agency. How will he be a bust?
  9. If you play for one run that's the most you can get. Occasionally there are times when it's wiser to go for the greater chance at one run than to go for the smaller chance at a big inning.
  10. I agree to some extent, but also disagree. There are a lot of players who possess at least some ability to sort of "guide" a tough pitch into foul territory with two strikes. There's certainly something to be said for the ability to foul off pitches to prolong an at bat, because making the pitcher throw more pitches (a) can tire him out, and (b) increases the change that you'll get a mistake pitch to hit.
  11. wait..nevermind. The answer is on the first page of this thread. poor rutgers
  12. i notice that in Ronny C's line there is no mention of BB, is this an oversight or just a lack of walks by Ronny? No walks so far. Just 23 PAs, though. no walks by Ronny Cedeno??? must be a misprint.
  13. yeah that'd feel real good behind a catcher's mask during a day game in 100 degree chicago heat Well, he's handling 85-degree Hawaii already, what's 15 more degrees with a catcher's mask? :P yeah but that's with a thin beard, not a grizzly adams beard
  14. who cares... i'm just hoping lou actually gets to the end of the contract, and that he doesn't get there like dusty baker did.
  15. Yeah, you guys used to throw batteries and bags of urine at him, didn't you? I used to hate him also. Batteries? Yes, someone threw a battery at him. Bags of urine? Come on.

  17. Batista has had an ERA+ over 100 for the past six years. If your 5th starter is better than the average pitcher in baseball, then you're probably doing a lot better than fielding a .500 team.
  18. how's drews CF defense? its easier to get a RF bat. It's also harder to get Drew and a RF bat than just getting Drew. It's hard to tell how his defense is in CF, he's got just over a season's worth of time there and half of it was back in his STL days. For his career he seems to be average, although the last two years he got more than a couple games he was below average(all of this based on BP's Rate, a far from infallible source). As stated, I have to oppose him, but even if he is a below-average CF, who cares? He puts up a .400 OBP and a 133 OPS+ at a position where most guys are average- to below-average hitters. The offense you gain at that position far outweighs the hit you'll take on defense.
  19. boy, this blind posting fee thing really makes it a crapshoot. With the Yankees stating they want him, I have a hard time not seeing him going there. Do the Yankees ever get outbid?
  20. I'm from near Philly, and I think my ingrained J.D. Drew dislike keeps me from endorsing the possibility of him being a Cub
  21. E-Patt for Cubs' 2007 2B
  22. jeez, being a little pessimistic aren't we? I'm not even that down on the Eagles (yet) When you have probably the most complete team in the NFC, and then suddenly the team gets destroyed with random injuries, it tends to get annoying. every team suffers injuries. Some years you're just completely snake bit, but the Giants still have the most important pieces to their offense (Manning and Barber) and Burress' injury is nothing major. They're 6-2 and play in a bad division, so even with the injuries they've suffered, they can still get pretty healthy for the playoffs. When you lose your 4 best offensive players, 3-4 defensive starters and your kicker and punter, that's destroyed by injuries. What the Giants are going through is just a little bit worse luck than the average NFL team.

  24. Nothing is a lock in the NFL. If they are successful at pressuring Grossman and can move the ball with short passes, the Bears can lose. not to mention it's a road game in a tough environment against a good team. I don't care if you're the Colts or whoever, that's never a lock.
